In this video I use a direct-to-paper technique that I don't normally use, but it's really easy and fun with the creamy Oxide inks. I also like that you can cover a large area very quickly. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for this video! I am trying to learn to use the oxide sprays that I bought and I think that I can use them with a sponge too! I know that this video is 5 years old and please don’t take what I am going to say as bad, but rather just something to think about because I am definitely not perfect either! I use those little make up sponges over and over just by squeezing the paint out In clean water. It works great and keeps a little bit of plastic out of the environment. I hope that you are still crafting!! Beautiful makes!💕

Thank you so much for your comment, Donna. When I use those sponges for applying my makeup I can rinse and re-use them a few times, but they don’t hold up for me in the craft room. They crumble and tear and make a big mess, so I don’t bother anymore. But I certainly agree that every little bit we can do to help the environment is very important 😊. Have fun playing with your oxide sprays!

@ibkristykat

usually color families work well together, but Tim had a video where he explained that the Oxides LAYER and play well together whereas the Distress Inks (regular) layer only so much before becoming muddy and too much. so when making the regular inks play well you want color families as well as the primaries to go together - reds & blues make purple so they'd "play well". Blue, purple, & green are the cool colors so they'd play well. Pinks, reds, oranges, & Yellows all play well - they are warm colors. That's sort of how to remember it. I found a video that was great at explaining that when playing on the Gelli Plate with acrylic paints, and realized the same was true for Distress inks. :)

Very nice ideas and very pretty backgrounds. I love the one with the pink,gold, green and blue I believe. But I thought you said you only used three co;ors on it, but I think there had to be 4 since the pink is sooo vivid and pretty in that card. I think it was the card #2 That you showed finished, but I’m newer so I could be wrong. Smile hugs.. thank you

Sheryl Menke abandoned coral, fossilized amber , and cracked pistachio. U can always rewind the video to go back and see thinks and then pause if you didn’t know. If you did don’t take offense, sometimes we just assume everybody knows some things and especially when it comes to computers, everybody does not know.

Hi, Margaret. Different card stocks will be either more or less helpful when blending, so that could be part of it. Something thick and very smooth is ideal, like Neenah Solar White or the Bristol Smooth are two top choices. Building up thinner layers of ink and doing a lot of blending can help, although I've noticed with the Oxides I can use a heavy layer and "float" the colors together. Honestly, it just takes practice until you find your technique. And when I just can't get the results I want, I add water! When the ink reacts to it, all of the pretty speckles and patches distract from the less-than-perfect blending :-))

Hello, Deborah! I have a small (3" tall) mister bottle that only sprays a delicate mist of water. I was referring to my large bottle (12" or so) that offers a stronger spray and actual water droplets. I just picked it up at my local drugstore, but that type of spray bottle is available many places. Hope this helps 😊

Do you use different sponges with each? I guess they can be cleaned and when dry they can be used again. It came pretty though
@inthecraftroom9724
@inthecraftroom9724 5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I use different sponges, and sometimes I'm able to turn them and use a clean spot for a different color. I have rinsed, dried, and reused sponges many times, but mostly they start to break down very quickly, leaving crumbles on my ink pads and papers. Once they are un-usable, I throw them away.
@almai6132

And beside that one what other can it be used, because i know that the crafts stores sell the douber and similar ones
@inthecraftroom9724
@inthecraftroom9724 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are many different options for ink blending. Mostly, I like the round Tim Holtz blending tools and the sponges for them. Those sponges hold up to a lot more uses, and it's easy to buy extra when you need them. I also purchased the little ink daubers that fit over your fingertip - I like those best when I want to sponge the edges of die cuts. There are also blending brushes available from several different companies (like Tonic) but I haven't used any of those yet.

@inthecraftroom9724
@inthecraftroom9724 5 жыл бұрын
Believe me, I make plenty of muddy messes, too! Once you discover some good blends (like Picked Raspberry with Peacock Feathers), make yourself a color chart to refer to for future projects. I also watch a lot of videos and make notes of the color combos I see others use. Tim Holtz is good to watch, also Sherry Carroll, Kristina Werner and Jennifer McGuire, to name a few. Sandy Allnock is also an amazing artist and a wonderful source of inspiration :-))
@katyp855
@katyp855 5 жыл бұрын
Try only blending colours that are either cool (blues and greens) or warms (red, yellow, pink, orange). This way you shouldn’t get mud. Don’t throw your sponges out either, it’s wasteful as they can be easily washed.

I thought it looked nice before you sprayed it with the water. Why did you use the heat tool? Wouldn't it look the same drying on its own?
@inthecraftroom9724
@inthecraftroom9724 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the colors certainly look beautiful without adding any water spritzes. I just used the heat tool instead of waiting for it to dry in order to save some time. Honestly, I think it turns out even prettier when you DO let it air dry :-)

Yeah, there's a major difference between my two bottles. I do tend to reach for my favorite distress colors again and again. I'm particularly in love with using Picked Raspberry and Peacock Feathers - they make the most gorgeous purple when they overlap. And the Abandoned Coral is quickly becoming a new favorite for sure!

Why would this technique work only with the distress oxide ink instead of the plain distress ink?
@inthecraftroom9724
@inthecraftroom9724 5 жыл бұрын
You can certainly blend with the original Distress inks, but the Oxides are a bit creamier which makes blending them a bit easier (for me.) Their other properties also allow them to create certain effects that the originals can't do, like layering light colors over dark ones.

I am shocked at the "disposable nature" of the sponges. I've never seen anyone use the makeup sponges for ink-blenders without gluing them in a plastic bottlecap and keeping one for each color of ink.

i have them and wash them out if they get too inked up. if i use them for paint, i can wash it out too, but sometimes if i don't i cut off the hardened area, and use the heck out of it until i gotta throw it out. i can get a pack at the Dollar Tree and yeah it's cheap, but they can be cleaned too so i try to make them stretch. IDK why she doesn't just rinse them.
@ibkristykat

either that or if they get hard before you get a chance to wash it out, just cut off the hardened end, and then you have a new "end" to use. not hard. :/

I like your results but I was shocked by the comment "not feeling wasteful" when disposing of the sponges because they're so cheap. They may be cheap to you but not in resources and energy that goes into making them. Nature wise they are anything but cheap.

Kristine Brüggemann I agree with you totally. And what about all those inks in the sponges? The Distress Inks are not cheap. Some people can’t spare that kind of money for a hobby. I’m thankful I can afford it and I feel physically sick if I casually discard them.

@@kayhalderman4160 agreed. i got any "Mass" craft thing i have for Christmas - not my money. Also on the topic, we can just WASH makeup sponges. and i get MINE from Dollar Tree - ALWAYS definitely a dollar lol so yeah (me = cheapskate)
