Flat bar gravel bike conversion on the Poseidon Redwood.
Flat handlebars on a gravel bike are good for sitting more upright and in a relaxed position. Some would argue you get more control with the wide bars as well as more braking power due to the brake lever ergonomics. Cheap and easy modification in this walkthrough video!

Watched 6 drop bar to flat bar conversion videos, yours by a wide margin was the best, most complete and easy to understand stand. Thanks for the list of components for conversion.

If you make a complete cockpit assembly (bar/stem/brake levers/shifter/grips/cables) it's relatively easy and quick to swap back and forth from a drop bar setup to a flat bar setup. You only have to remove the cable crimps to disconnect three cables, pull them through the frame and fork, remove the stem cap and loosen the stem from the steerer tube to get the whole assembly off. Reverse that process; install the other assembly, adjust the cables and crimp the ends. I'm doing this with my Redwood.

I like that. Quick swap cockpits. Would be cool if inner cables could be disconnected at the brifters and shifter like the mtb style levers

Did this on my x. I even did bar ends (full dad). However, I did inner bar "ends" to have a more roadie position on long straights. I also switched to compressionless brake housing. Whole new bike!

Going this way on a 94 Stumpy FSR that I resto-modded to drops with advent X back in 2020. Never got quite comfortable with the long reach even with the short stem. Definitely a cheaper swap than what those advent x drop levers costed.

Love the video thank you. I think gravel bikes are great because of their low weight but I wish more of them would offer flat bars.

Yours is by far the best explaining this. I do fine turning wrenches, but I am all thumbs when it comes to working with getting the cables right. I'm going to take mine into a bike shop so it looks somewhat factory. I kinda want to get some cable shielding that has some wild color to it like Neon Green or red to complement my grey/black bicycle....give it some pizzaz, lol.

I did this with my specialized awol. Hydraulic brakes, and shifter conversions can add complexity and cost to this type of conversion. This one however, looks pretty simple. Gotta say, Hydraulic is nice, but there's something to be said for the simplicity of cable brakes.

I always built hybrids, always rode at "party" pace. MT200 hydraulic brakeset + flatbar shifters almost always cost less than the equivalent dropbar counterparts. And after experiencing the feel of full hydraulic brakes, i will never go back to cable brakes unless i have no other option. The simplicity of cable brakes is still not worth it for me, even if my first three bicycles had cable brakes (two from the 90's, one from the 2010's).

I just did this by moving all my Poseidon parts to a retro stumpy now it’s a Poseidon and bought a flat bar shifter for it.

True that! The only drop bar bikes I've owned were a miniature Chinese road bike for children in 1982, a Raleigh steelie that I bought in the mid-1990s, and a Trek 1.2 that I bought in 2016 and traded in for an FX just 10 days later. I can't even remember what happened to that Chinese bike, but I did convert the Raleigh to flat bars in late 2019 and never looked back.

Feel like the FR5 levers are long pull. Also, why not take the entire cockpit + cables + housing off as a complete set? You can't reuse the brake cables anyway and it'll be much easier to swap back to the drop setup. Despite this, nice conversion. Flat bar gravel/road bikes are fun.

Did this with my Marin Four Corners...never going back to Drop bars again!! Better brakes (hydraulic), lower gears and much better handling off road.

@@mofmanp8874 nope. I got altus shifters (3*9), kept the sora FD and I had anyway replaced Sora RD with Acera when i broke the Sora RD in an accident. It runs absolutely smooth. That is the best part about 9 speed...until 9 speed, shimano road MTB components work with each other.

@@mofmanp8874 no, unless you need longer cables because of different sizes of bars n all...sometimes, cables lengths are longer on flat bars than drop bars, but the same cables also work abs fine

Never understood drop bars on a gravel bike in the first place. If you don't want it to look like a dad bike, use a real flat bar (not a riser). You might also want to use a longer stem to have the same reach as with the old drop bars.

I’m doing this on the same bike. Thought I’d like the drop bar but i dont. I set the thing up out of the box without many problems but otherwise a novice to working on bikes. So do I have to change the brake and shifter cables? Can you just leave them in place and connect the existing cables to the new brake and shifters or are they not compatible?

I’m trying to go the other way.. I got a great deal on a 2021 Giant Roam 3 which is everything I could ask for EXCEPT it’s not a drop bar.. everywhere I look and everyone I ask about making it a drop bar says it’s either pointless or needlessly expensive.. So what is it.. could I get a 420 drop bar with a 15* flare and simply swap out haydraulic shifters or do I have to redo brakes shifters lines and etc?

Clicked on this video thinking you might have a secret short pull brake lever. But the FR5s ain't them! Those are for linear pull/ v-brake aka long pull.

Funny calling this a “dad bike” One thing that jumps out at me as an owner of a Specialized Sirus X5.0 is the similarity between a flat bar Sirus, and a drop bar Diverge.

Yea, I think you're spot on; FR-5's should be linear pull. The Tektro MD C550 are made for short pull road levers, but the FR5 levers feel great; I have no problem locking up either wheel. I was one-finger braking down chino hills yesterday too.. Good catch!

Just depends on the type of riding you do. A flat bar will feel more upright and relaxed

Spacers, no. But it could use a slightly longer stem. I’d probably bump it up by 15-20mm
