In this vlog, I'm up on a misty Ditchling Beacon with my dog Barney, using my large format 4x5 camera and some Ilford FP4+ film.
Recently, I watched a vlog from Mark Bowering where he had photographed this same dew pond but in totally different conditions and as I had to be in the town of Lewes this week, I thought I'd drive over and take a look at it myself.
Ditching Beacon is the third highest point on the South Downs Way in the South East of England at a height of 248m. The dew pond that is sited there is an artificial pond, placed for the benefit of watering livestock that roam there.

As a wedding photographer I am always racing the clock to get images. These videos are very therapeutic. Nice to see art made at a pace that makes sense for art. The daylight is your main pressure and that feels like the pace we evolved at and there is something beautiful about it. I am both deeply depressed and highly encouraged by your work as a result. So tired of cramming everything into 45 chaotic minutes. Thank you for making these videos.

Thanks Jon, yes I know what you mean. I've been doing weddings (and still am) for 15 years but started landscapes to get away from that style of working, i.e. rushed atmosphere, working with people, must-get shots, shooting digitally. I love doing these trips because there's no pressure, it's time alone and I can meddle with these old film cameras. Occasionally, I don't get anything but that doesn't matter as just being out is enough for me. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Really nice images there Craig an achievement in itself while putting together such a well thought out video too. Really very enjoyable to watch. I think leaving music out really adds to the atmosphere and calmness of watching you work. A really great vlog and as good as it gets in terms of production and imagery. This is the magic formula for me. Seriously well done. Love how you compose your video clips as well as your stills. Great job.

Hi James, thank you once again. I am trying to make my videos look as good as they can which is a learning curve in itself. I did think about using music this time as the wind was the dominant sound here but as I'd recording some wind noise, I just decided to go with that. Obviously, you can play with the levels and make it a little more dramatic at different parts of the video. I was lucky to not have to work with too much wind around the pond when taking the shots, but it was quite windy as I made my way there so this is where it was recorded. Thanks for your encouragement - it's very much appreciated.

@@CraigPrentisPhoto I spent considerable time breaking down the structure of a Landscape Photography vlog, looking at the timeline in detail and where and when to include B-Roll, music, and different kind of shots to communicate the landscape but also the process. I drew it all out in graphical form as that's how i work best being a visual person. What i think you've produced here is what i'd define as the perfect Landscape Photography vlog. I struggled with Music as a creator, from the right kind to where to source it. In the end I gave up and used the sounds of the environment. Spring time blogs in woodland were best as the bird song was amazing. I think what you have here is in essence perfection for me. Really enjoyable to watch. It suits your personality and the relaxed and educated approach you have to photography, as a viewer it feels relaxed and comfortable, professional and you come across very comfortably. This could be a professional series of videos for a large brand. While I don't wish to come across in the wrong way when i vlogged I got a lot form the KZfaq community and feedback was really helpful most of the time. I'm saying what i am both as a vlogger and a viewer. I appreciate how hard it is to put yourself out there and dilute the photographic process with having one eye on, what would youtube want to see. I spent an evening with Tom Heaton recently and we both shared the same challenges and frustrations with youtube content creation. It's hard and what you're doing Craig is in my view as good as it gets. For me I struggled to get into a place where i felt comfortable with what I'd created on location both in terms of photos and video hence the retrospective style I adopted. I commend you for what you've producing here and i thoroughly enjoy your content. Without sounding awkward I'm fairly confident this vlog is one of the finest I've ever seen and i watch loads. Genuinely well done and I'm actually envious of what you've got here. I look forward to seeing how things develop for you and your channel. If you can apply this formula to future shoots you're onto a winning setup for me.

James, I don't know what to say. I'm genuinely bowled over by what you've said here. I have always struggled with the promotion side of my photography business. Always happy to be behind the camera and out doing the job, but never really knowing the right way to get the message out there for drumming up new business. The various social media platforms have helped but I know I could do more. I've been a photographer for over 20 years, but unlike you, I haven't spent much of my working life doing landscapes. I started with KZfaq after watching a few of TH's videos (I expect I'm not the only one to have done this). He made it look easy and had such a huge following that I thought I'd give it a go. Really, how hard could it be? Ha ha, how wrong could I have been? I think by doing them you realise how much goes into them and for relatively little gain. I think I started because I've got to the point now where I'm not so self-conscious, I don't really care about how I look or sound but I feel as though I have a bit of knowledge and I'm almost testing myself to see if I can make a go of it. My interest in filming is almost as strong as my desire to photograph now and by doing these vlogs, it's an excellent way develop and hone these new skills. What I must do now is start to see how I can make it work financially. These vlogs take the best part of two days to shoot, edit, review comments etc and at the moment, bring in little/no income. This will probably speed up as I get used to doing them - I hope it does. Like you say, I am hugely encouraged by the comments that appear on here. It is the main thing that spurs me on to keep going. There does seem to be a good community spirit in all of this. I am hugely inspired all the time by seeing how other people work and always enjoy looking behind the scenes. The backstory is often the most interesting part. Thank you for your lovely message. It means a lot coming from a talented bloke like you. You do whatever you've got to do to get by and if it happens, I'll be really happy to see your next video pop up in my stream. Cheers James and thanks again ;-)

Craig Prentis Craig Prentis you’re very welcome. Often people are too keen to critique but not congratulate. There’s a great community here on KZfaq and it’ll add a positive to your work. My advise would be to keep doing what you’re doing. You come across really well and I’m sure a prospective client would feel confident in you once seeing this. Give it time and stick at it. TH was saying the same regards time and effort. I don’t think there’s a short cut there. I always wished for a filmer so I could concentrate on the image so to speak. I don’t think there’s a fast track way to success on KZfaq more a long game with slowly building up a following who want you to succeed. After a while your audience feel they know and love you and want you to do well. Have a listen to Nigel Dansons Togcast interview if you haven’t already. I met Nige a few weeks back and again he’s another decent guy giving it a go. He’s made excellent progress building his channel with consistent and well put together content. You’re channel to me is as or more interesting to me simply because of the film element. Like Steve O’nions who has a great channel too. I appreciate it’s a lot of effort and ultimately that’s why I gave in. I know TH and ND do well with their calendars. I bought both. Not to use but as a gesture of support. Whether you can introduce a physical or electric product you can sell is down to you I guess. I tried it with my book and sold a few. Another really good channel is Nick Carvers channel. He’s working on some paid content educating people on film photography metering etc. He’s very engaging and a natural in front of the camera. Negative feedback is also a good watch who have a decent following and always seem to seek out of Zeens they create. I guess the key is to enjoy it and keep doing it. TH set a benchmark and built a very strong following which has it’s ups and downs. I guess it ultimately comes down to what you want out of it. If you can keep producing content like this I see no reason why you’re channel and you won’t be as popular as anyone on KZfaq. This vlog is text book perfect in my mind and that in its self is an achievement. Quite often the images seem on blogs don’t match the production value whereas yours do. Too marks all round from me. Very envious actually. I’ve been in over 150 shoots this year which would make for some great content but as always how i spend my energy is key for me. What you’ve got going here is really good and I hope you continue to enjoy it and work towards building your profile. I for one look forward to your journey. Cheers Craig.

Yes these are all good points, James. It’s early days for me and I’m enjoying it so this makes the process of creating new videos easier. Keeping up a steady output of new content is important in order to grow. I just hope I can keep it going. I already follow all the people you mentioned and yes, I bought Nigel’s calendar too. I always like watching Steve O’Nions and Nick Carver is incredibly talented and charismatic. Would love to tap into some of the younger Negative Feedback demographic but I’m just not that cool! Having said that, there’s definitely a resurgence in film so hopefully the message will get through to some of the old and new film community. I’m going to be offering some prints soon and zines and calendars could be something I look at for next year. Thanks James, your support is much appreciated.

I like the fact that Craig doesn't tell us the aperture or shutter speed, to me this is irrelevant. If I were to go to that spot in the same weather I would get different readings to him, I just don't understand why so much emphasis is put on the settings. Also, if you want to know the readings, go there and work it out for yourself. That's how you learn.

Lovely images! We don't get such soft days here unless it's raining, which reduces the fog dramatically. You mentioned you had a difficult time focusing the second image. Do you use a loupe for focusing or just eyeball it? I'd recommend a loupe if possible. They can be relatively inexpensive and are small & light so they're easy to include in your bag. Another wonderful video!
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
I think it was a combination of things, John. I always use a loupe (I didn't show it here) but I do struggle with the 90mm lens and focussing at f8 - it's not as bright and sharp looking on the GG as my 135mm. The light was also dropping quite a bit. I'm glad you enjoyed it though. Thanks for watching.

superb location and conditions, and you got the most out of it. I was concerned about the last image when you used f22, but you managed to get both the near and far subjects in focus, or was the far tree soft since it was in the mist anyway?

Thanks Steve H. For me, on this occasion, it's sharp enough. The mist added a lot of softness to the scene but there's enough definition in the far tree.

Craig, I just have a question when you arrive at any location do you determine the aperture (fstop) when you arrive at location or do you let the meter determine that for you? I know weather condition change and if it’s to bright you have to close down your aperture and if it’s to dark you have to open.
@CraigPrentisPhoto

Yes, I'll always meter for the exposure at the scene. I'll decide on an aperture that will work with the shutter speed. e.g. If there's a lot of movement in a tree and I want to keep it fairly sharp, I can't go too long on the shutter speed. I usually try to stop down the aperture as much as possible for sharpness and depth of field.

As is always the case, I see a composition whilst watching the video footage other than the one photographed in the film. This isn't just your film, I do it on my own films too. At the point 2.19 I noticed the smaller tree reflected in the dew pond and wondered how that might have looked taken from the side you are stood but with that tree centralised in the frame with its reflection to create a very minimilist comp? Great film to watch with lots of lovely atmosphere! Your dog's occasional whimper drives my dog nuts and I can't hear what you are saying 😂

Ha ha, that's brilliant Simon and I know what you mean about seeing photos in the videos (your own and other vlogs). I can just imagine you saying "Stop talking man and get that shot right there..." I think whatever I did, it was always going to be a minimalist sort of shot and it was all about what composition to choose. I only had two lenses the 135 and 90mm (standard or wide angle) and I must admit would have liked something a little longer to get across the pond to the second tree as a slightly tighter composition. I'm glad you liked it and I like the thought of you sitting with your dog watching these videos ;-)

you edit any of these shots or just straight scan?

With these, I scanned a very flat looking image to a RAW dng file. Then the highlights and shadows levels are adjusted in LR or PS, a bit of an 'S' on the tone curve and some contrast. Also a level for a bit of dust clean up.
