One of the best videos I’ve ever watched. My wife bought me dive lessons for an anniversary and I know almost nothing about diving. Your video was concise, informative and extremely helpful. Thank you. (Special props for keeping it under four minutes!)

I always thought you could only get the bends from compressed SCUBA air until I read the Republic of Pirates. In 1715, a hurricane sunk ten Spanish treasure fleets off the coast of Florida, attracting thousands of treasure hunters who then forced slaves to stay underwater for so long they got the bends. Also, apparently your lungs explode if you don't fully exhale while heading to the surface. I have a new respect for divers now.

Look at that amazing chart someone made! Thanks for showing us that kind of compassion. “Dive computer”cost how much usually? Thanks for the video option.

You can get a dive computer that works perfectly well for about $180 and spend more than $1000 if you want all the bells and whistles.

Just commenting on your mention of the inability to "get credit" for time at a shallower depth with a dive table. You absolutely can "get credit" for this time, but you must do it *_before hand._* You simply plan a multi-level dive using the table. The issue with the table (other than people reading/using them wrong on a rocking boat) is the difficulty of adjusting your calculations on fly as your dive changes. Let's say your second segment was supposed to be at thirty feet, but you went up higher (twenty-six feet) to avoid something, adjusting your calculations mid-dive would be very difficult with a table. A further limitation of the tables is their use of round numbers. Calculating a specific depth like 26ft or 62ft must be done at the nearest closest number provided by the table.

Or as Lloyd Bridges called it on his high adventure show about a "frogman," the rapture of the deep! Could you point me to a reputable web site or organization that could reccomend a good place for dive lessons if I ever get the money? Theres only one guy close to me and I personally know from experience that he is arrogant and a bit of a donkey's hind end. Not comfortable putting my life into hands like that.

Rapture of the deep is not the same as the bends. Rapture of the deep, also called nitrogen narcosis, is a state somewhat like being drunk, caused by the way nitrogen acts on the brain when under pressure. The bends, also called decompression sickness, is caused by nitrogen building up in the tissues and then being trapped when the bubbles expand as you surface.

@@seikibrian8641 thank you for laying that knowledge on me. Since they are both caused by nitrogen under pressure and are both potentially lethal and can be related, I understood them to be the same thing. I'd much rather be kindly corrected than continue in ignorance. Thank you again. It is appreciated!

@@coolnegative You're very welcome. One thing to note is that nitrogen narcosis can be cured nearly instantly by simply ascending; for most people, getting above 100 feet does the trick, and unlike being drunk there's no hangover. Rapture of the deep is only fatal if you get so goofy that you let yourself run out of air, or take your regulator out of your mouth to give it to a passing fish or something like that. Decompression sickness, on the other hand, will get worse as you ascend, so you need to either descend to the point of symptom relief and then hold there for some time (a decompression stop), or go ahead and surface and then get into a decompression chamber ASAP. Much better to watch your time and depth so you can avoid DCS in the first place. (It can STILL happen, but it's much less likely.)
