I am a retired Navy Nuke, and as for the water, pure water is not radioactive, but any impurities in it can become highly radioactive. Cobalt-60 is the most dangerous isotope that they are probably encountering in large amounts. It has a half-life of 5.27 years and produces ionizing radiation in the gamma ray window, making it it exceptionally dangerous. This whole thing is a terrible idea.

Main issue is not touching stuff or staying near radioactive dust : it's BREATHING it. Once you breath radioactive dust, it stays inside you. And it keeps beeing radioactive. Years after this, the radioactivity is still slowly destroying them from the inside. That's why the n°1 safety equipment you would need to go there is a good mask (FFP3).

Absolutely true. It’s also not radioactive *everywhere*. There might be Hotspots for weirds reasons that you don’t know at first (hole in roof where it drips down, accumulation along certain winds etc.). And you don’t perceive radiation; without a dosimeter this is all just guesswork what they are doing. They could be fine, or they could be standing on top of Dusty McSievert… Radiation is a complex thing and 99%+ of the population don’t understand a thing about it, sadly. Including many commenters. It’s either complete fear mongering or not understanding what really isn’t harmless.

I've been to Chernobyl and Pripyat in 2019. The radiation directly in front of the reactor is relatively low (barley more than normal background radiation). There are hot spots (sudden spikes in radioactivity) all over Pripyat and in the exclusion zone. The red forest is essentially radioactive waistland. The best way to reduce radiation exposure is distance - taking one step back from a hot spot drops radiation back to background levels. With the plant, you have water that functions as a shield (so beta and alpha radiation is not a problem), plus the walls of the reactor itself. Limited time because you are going to run out of air at some point and most importantly, diving under the reactor still means you are maintaining distance to radioactive sources. The problem with dust (or, for example, forest fires that release radiation in the air) is that dust particles with radio-emitters can travel into your lungs or settle on your skin. Now, you have zero distance, a very prolongued exposure time and no shield. Alpha radiaton does not travel far, but that means that essentially all energy is transferred to the most immediate surroundings. If that is your lungs, it can cause a lot of damage until it is surgically removed. Alpha emitters are usually also gamma emitters. Gamma radiation travels very far and is mostly only really effectively stopped by increased distance. So gamma radiation will destroy your cells in the rest of your body if you swallow or inhale an alpha emitter. The side effect of 10 m (30 feet) thick lead shielding is basically ensuring that you are keeping distance. Long story short, I'd feel much safer diving under the reactor than taking a walk through the red forest. Maybe with proper diving equipment though. Also, they really should regularly check the dosimeter to quickly walk past potential hotspots or areas with higher radiations. They also should wear protective clothing and not disturb the dust that settled. Overall, it's obviously a stupid idea. Also, they seem to not really know much about radiation.

@S M Yes of course! I wanted to visit because I am a chemist and we did a lecture on radiochemistry and one unit was soley focused on what happened in Chernobyl and the effects it still has today. I also worked in a radiation exclusion area at the time at my uni. The tour was incredibly interesting and I highly recommend to anyone who is able to visit. It kind of is a tourist spot with guided tours by now. There are a few safety requirements in place (like closed shoes, head to toe clothing, no touching or taking things and so on, plus you get scanned for radiation a few times), but as far as radiation exposure is concerned, the flight to Ukraine comes with a higher radiation exposure than spending the day in the exclusion zone. People also still work there and stay in Chernobyl (the town, not the reactor).

@@stevemcgowen Yes, people selling or incorrectly disposing of radioactive scrap metal is a huge problem even outside the former soviet union and satellite states. There has been a few cases of acute radiation poisoning with people finding warm or glowing metals and not knowing what they are, often from medical equipment or old reactor cores. If I remember correctly, junk yards used to be guarded by soldiers because people would steal and resell radioactive metal.

Woody has to be one of my favorite people I've never met, for a number of reasons. Whenever you guys are reviewing your videos, I have the same reactions as Gus to just about everything, but I SO much appreciate how seriously Woody takes it and his genuine concern for human life. Keep doing what you're doing guys, I don't dive, but you guys are awesome and have kept me entertained for 40+ hours EASILY

From somebody who's lived overseas, your statement, "It's just the wild West over there" is pretty accurate. I've seen a mechanics shop made out of a wooden crate (great respect for him using what he had, by the way). This shop did not suprise me at all.

I work with radioactive devices and have the certs as well. Yes, the water traps the radiation at the bottom. Dust is the problem, but radiation doesn't spread out evenly and certain areas will be more contaminated then others. Chernobyl is completely safe for a couple hours at a time and has been open to tourism since 2011.

I think he probably either got sick (they mentioned last video they went to a hospital, these guys didnt react to it or watch it tho) or he realized it was the dangerous, or he realized these people arent his friends, and theyre actually just using him like a guinea pig and using him for views. Or he died. They weren't actually in the main reactor tho, so the radiation levels arent "as bad" where they were, so I don't think he's dead. Probably one of the first three is most likely, my guess is radiation poisoning, since his skin was peeling off last vid thats a sign of acute radiation sickness. It would probably take him a long time to recover if true, tho some people are lucky and it only takes acouple months to get better. Btw just wanted to mention, even if the water itself isn't radioactive (which it probably is, but maybe maybe science says it can't happen idk) even if that's the case, the dust and sut they kick up in the water 100% is.

While the water can dampen amount of radiation that reaches you, daughter nuclei that form as the uranium decays can be water soluble (and are typically much more radioactive than the fuel itself). The dust can be radioactive, as well as the air itself from Radon gas that forms. I’m any case, your two make great videos! Love the channel!

Okay, so I know this is probably too late to be useful for most people but as I watched this video I did some research and apparently the unit 5 where they are is an unfinished reactor in a building about a kilometer (0.6 mi) to S-E from the main building with the original four (which is much better secured). In fact it is the reactor that's the _furthest_ from the unit 4 that melted down. Which means that even if there is a tunnel connecting those two buildings, it would be very long (~1 km) and on the other side there is still the whole main building (itself over 600 m long) to get through. Fortunately it also means that the radioactivity here probably isn't nearly as high as it would be in the main building, let alone near the fourth reactor. Btw. the radioactivity around the power plant isn't all that high, mostly I think it's around 3x the normal background rate anywhere else, it's just some specific areas where it's higher (like the Red Forest) and only some specific parts of the fourth reactor building where you can actually get acute radiation sickness. So no, the guy at 13:20 is _not_ "blushing from radiation". If he was sick from that he would be nauseous, pale and possibly start vomiting in a few hours, depending on the dose.

You haven't lived: Until you've partied with intoxicated, crazy Soviets. Trying to explain the English word "torsion," - I referenced Ancient Roman Ballistae. Well - They got excited. These 4 engineers ran to the craft room - In no time, they had a working, crossbow-sized model. All of a sudden... They're test-firing it inside an apartment high-rise, down a hallway, at a closet door, with a scrawled "X" for a target. I recall a sort of ratcheting, cranking sound...next; I screamed - for, from the bathroom, I heard a THWAP-bang louder than a gunshot - and the toilet, attached to the wall that was...shall we say "compromised," shook. Yes, my toilet shook. Some sort of shockwave. I didn't understand much of the rapid chatter...but made out something like: "I didn't mean to fire!" and "Dude, I hadn't placed the pillows behind the door yet!" and "oh God, where did it go?" Peeking fearfully out of the bathroom, I finally emerged to see: -A silver dollar-sized hole in the thick, wooden closet door. -Men pulling out a full-length fur coat (and a finger penetrating a small hole from left - all the way through - to right pocket.) -White and grey dust everywhere (thought it was plaster - it was concrete or cinderblock.) -A quarter-sized hole in the wall...leading to darkness. A flashlight revealed...the unoccupied kitchen of the next apartment. "What did you launch? I'm still holding the leather ball!" Sergei said next. "A marble?" asked Dima. Embarrassed Alex muttered "It was an AA Battery." In a stunned, comical silence...all our heads turned towards the hole, like a Scooby Doo episode. An argument erupted - "who will pay for the damage? Who will inform the neighbor, when they return from vacation?" An excited Dima said "NOBODY!" and smiled big. "I see table legs in there! The hole is under the table! We'll just seal it up!" So - they did. Some sort of a quick-drying grey putty. I never got to find out: -What happened to the battery - did it explode and splash acid everywhere? -Did it do further damage? Penetrate a couch, or window? The flashlight couldn't see. The jovial mood returned when the "ramont" (repair) work was finished. And - the drinking resumed. In no time, they held a brief naming contest, came up with an awe-struck, affectionate "Batteria." And, they're making plans to test-fire the weapon of mass-chaos from the rooftop of an abandoned half-constructed high-rise. Alas, I couldn't keep Batteria. They tried to give her to me, saying, I was the genesis of their fine creation. (They could always produce more models.) I was honored! However - I handed it back to them at the airport. I was not about to try and explain the medieval weapon in my luggage, quite capable of penetrating aircraft skin. Nor, go to some Soviet-style prison on terror charges. But I still think fondly of Batteria, to this day. There's all kinds of jackass-crazy. Redneck crazy is pretty impressive. But NOTHING beats _Soviet Crazy._ SCUBA in Chernobyl? Yup. The average Russian, Ukrainian, or ANYONE woudldn't do this. But there's always those crazies...
