A couple things: They're in a nuclear power plant, but not the reactor itself. They would receive a fatal dose in minutes in the reactor. There are several different kinds of radiation (alpha, beta, gamma). Alpha and Beta are less dangerous because they can't penetrate the skin, but if they get inside you (say by breathing in dust), they can be very dangerous. That's why you see people always wearing masks near Chernobyl.
@sjk7467
@sjk7467 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, thanks for letting everyone know. Aren’t some of the particles unable to penetrate things like concrete? Does the fact affect his at all? How would the dust get all the way out of the reactor and floors and multiple barriers of concrete away? Wind?
@asdfjklol
@asdfjklol 2 жыл бұрын
@@sjk7467 Yes, Alpha and Beta radiation cannot penetrate concreate. With gamma radiation it depends on the thickness of the concrete. Unlike Western reactors, the USSR did not build containment structures around their reactors, so an enormous amount of radioactive material was ejected when the reactor exploded in 1986. That dust is everywhere, even miles from the reactor, and still dangerous today. For example, there were reports that Russian soldiers who built trenches in the "Red Forest" during the war in Ukraine had to be hospitalized for radiation sickness. They built the "sarcophagus" containment structure to contain the most radioactive material, but the saprophagous leaks. So it's possible that water enters the saprophagous, picks up the radioactive dust, and then flows around. Eventually, the dust would settle to the bottom, which is why its horrifying how the diver was stirring up the sediment. I cringed when he pulled off his glove with his teeth.

Well yes the reactor that blew it's top is completely sealed off to the public now even on tours, has been since the arch was fully errected. They are over at reactor 5 which was never finished back in the 80s, didn't even have its core installed yet and is still accesible to this day iiiiiifffff you doit right, so... they are MOSTLY safe? I'm a Norwegian diver, and over here it's so cold that we dry suit dive year-round. What Woody says about free-flow is quite correct, that often occurs because of the cold temperatures with the second stage freezing. Often we have -2 centigrade water here, so it's quite fun diving in other countries having people wonder how we can stay underwater for so long when they freeze their asses off after an hr long dive.

Why would it be more radioactive?
@Rykiz_Vidz
@Rykiz_Vidz 10 ай бұрын
@jbennison5672 because I believe water is a sort of barrier that keeps the radioactivity inside of it. Which is why it is used to keep radioactive material inside of it. If I'm not mistaken, and once you step inside the water you are basically getting all the water and radioactive materals stuck to you which were previously stuck in the water.

@@jbennison5672the type of radiation that is present at Chernobyl is a contaminant. It is alpha (particulate) radiation and it’s worse when it’s inside of things. When they went in the water touching stuff and the water that’s frozen in general would have been dense enough to trap high intensity radiation. The water going inside his mouth when he took off the mask would have been the worst contamination as this radiation must be ingested or make it’s way into the blood stream because it is the least penetrating.

You absolutely can get freeflows under water without coming to the surface, I've had two doing winter dives in the the UK. As the air reduces in pressure, coming through the regulators, it drops in temperature (vice versa when filling your tank and increasing pressure = heat), the more air that is coming through, the lower the temperature will be at the exit point. Slow breathing allows for the surrounding water (even very cold water) to warm the heatsink around the reg and limit chances for a freeflow. You also need to avoid using the reg at the surface/allowing freeflows on giant stride entry because the heatsink doesn't function as well in air and can cause a build up. I dive with Apeks MTX-R regs now as they have super chonky heatsinks around the 1st and 2nd stages to make them far less likely to freeflow, touch wood no issues yet but 6C is the coldest I've dived this set so far, UK inland winter and Silfra will be their proving grounds :)

I can't imagine trying to run that system for yourself while you are diving in a cave. I love your videos. Thank you! Also, the guys in this video are safe as reported by them in a recent video. The Russians did just take over this nuclear power plant after all. At this very minute the electricity to the plant is OFF and the cooling ponds that keep spent fuel rods safe are in danger of running dry. This situation sucks. I doubt they will ever be able to go back to this plant again.

Did everyone hear that Zeus is in a hospital or coffin, suffering from Radiation Sickness. That's what he said without saying it. That's 1 update on the situation post-dive, from the creators.

Looking like a diver and being a diver are not the same thing! I'm just thinking about how I would do a dive briefing for such a dive site. The mind boggles! Possible risks: Radiation, drowning, poor equipment, equipment failure, lack of basic diving skills, inability to clear mask fog, free flow, torch failure, silt out, navigation issues, no backup light, no buddy, no limited vis training, entanglement, no emergency plan, no rescue skills, lack of a dive plan, frozen equipment, ice entrapment, swallowing irradiated water, slipping, falling over. But apart from that, quite safe! Did I miss anything? "Safety is more important". Best line of the video.

15 years ago a friend of mine, that was a professional technical diver, wanted to show me a flooded monastery under a lake ich Czech Republic, hard to reach, it would have been an under water entrance, 8-10 inches wide, about 200ft long. He got the equipment, but broke up the adventure before we entered because he had a bad feeling, and he told me he is nit going to do sth dangerous like this when his stomach tells him not to do. He died 5 years later caused by cancer, so I never was able to experience this.

That toxic waste will tear your tongue up if you eat like 3 of them. Like grinding sandpaper on your tongue, all that malic acid. Much like Warheads. Very good. Should try the 1UP Sour Candy "challenge" by Faze Rug.

When you think you've seen it all, then comes a dude with a fishbowl for a head swimming in a frozen nuclear reactor, covered in saran wrap, while receiving air from a bike pump, all in the name of making TEA. Ah the sweat steeps of radiation.

The radiation where they are is slightly above the background, they are diving under an unfinished reactor not the one that had a melt down, not a great idea but radiation isn't anything as they say it is, they purposely don't show the radiation when there isnt any

As a new OW Diver in Austria I'm thankful for Gus explaining the freezing of the regulator. That's why we here get extra exercise for the case of a freezing tank or regulator. Fun fact: it's also the reason why in Austria our tanks have got two valves, so we can close the air supply to the deffect regulator and safely ascent with the working one without loosing air. Sorry for any mistakes in my english.

Most likely, the radiation is going up because he is stirring up the radioactive silt in the water. The water itself is not radioactive, but the sediment at the bottom is. At least they have an estimate of the total dose accumulated. It seems not to be dangerous yet.

Did you guys hear about the incident at the oil company recently in Trinidad? 5 divers working on a 30" riser pipeline from inside a hyperbaric chamber were "mysteriously" sucked into the pipeline, one was recovered, the other 4 perished. I would love to hear your opinions on the incident, if there is even enough info for you to form an opinion, I know its commercial not cave diving but i figured it may be a good topic for you to cover. If you need me to gather info for you or at least send links let me know.
