Diverticulitis - Hospitalization and Complications

Do you have severe Diverticulitis or worry that it could happen to you one day? Are you in the hospital with severe Diverticulitis and are worried about the complications of the disease? If so, watch this video to learn more!
When is hospitalization needed for Diverticulitis? You can be hospitalized with a milder form of Diverticulitis, but Diverticulitis can become very severe. Lets talk about the symptoms that would keep you hospitalized and what medications you will be given. Many patients want to know when they will be able to eat again?
A lot of the times, complications with severe Diverticulitis can occur. Perforations, obstructions, abscesses, and fistulas are all complications of Diverticulitis that we will discuss. I will define what these complications are, how they are managed, what happens if the patients isn't getting better, and how surgery can help.
Many medical specialties are involved in the care of a patient with Diverticulitis. Of course, the GI doctor will be there the whole way. But when complications occur, an interventional radiologist and various surgical specialties will be consulted to either observe the patient or perform procedures. I will discuss when that happens as well.

I was diagnosed with acute diverticulitis and I’m watching learning about my disease 🦠 the pain is terrible 😢 I don’t want to have it ever again!!!!

In December, I was rushed to hospital with sepsis and peritonitis with a perforated bowel. I have a stoma now and getting better but that was a very scary episode.

I believe it has to do with a diet high in carbs, low in fiber and not enough exercise, not enough water.

In Italy all they eat is pasta packed with carbs, diverticulitis is less common over there??

My wife has diverticulosis and she has severe weight loss. No one from what I have looked up has addressed severe weight loss. She is on the doctor’s FODMAP diet. However, she is still in pain, weight loss and lack of energy. Any ideas in a different direction she should take?

I’d suspect something else is going on then plain old diverticulosis.

Hey Doc.. Got a question for you.. I started having blood in my stool a couple weeks ago, along with constipation, which I have been dealing with the last couple weeks. Then three days ago started getting a weird pain in my lower abdomen near the belly button area that hasn't gone away.. Just went to the ER. They did a ct and said it's diverticulitis. The doctor prescribed me some antibiotics and told me I was gonna need to eat foods that would slow my digestion down for a few days to let the diverticulitis heal.. I'm really second guessing that.. I already am dealing with constipation and keep feeling like I need to go but can't. Seems like a bad idea to back myself up even more.. Researching this diverticulitis on the internet and getting conflicting information everywhere.. I just don't know where to go here.. Do you have any advice or recommendation?

Diverticulitis usually should not bleed. So I would consider these patients who may need antibiotics and possibly an anti inflammatory course then scope to see what is actually going on. Radiology is shadow reading. Scoping we can see and biopsy the actual problem.
