Alternative top 10 Deeper Sea divers absolutely refuse to talk about 10. Diving the bottom of the mariana trench. There's just way too many spooky things down there 9. Off-Planet diving. They refuse to talk about diving on Mars because theres way to many spooky aliens up there 8. Skydiving directly into scuba diving 7. Close encounters with aquatic leviathans. Probably because the ones who could, haven't been heard back and cant be found 6. Cthulhu. Divers are very tight lipped on their octopus face diety. Going as far as *claiming* Cthulhu doesn't actually exist 5. Their insatiable thirst for penetrating all of Mother Natures holes 4. How rich they are in scuba gear, and if they're buying the case of shrimp flavored Ramen or the Chicken flavored thos month 3. PADI has turned every nuanced skill into a 2 hour $300 course. 2. Freediving 1. Rather obscure dive accident that happened atleast 9 years ago.

That thing you experienced with being unable to breathe after accidentally inhaling a droplet was likely a "laryngospasm", which is a natural but uncontrollable contraction of the vocal folds that can happen if the vocal chords or some other area of the trachea senses something solid landing on it. It usually only lasts a few moments or up to a minute, and is essentially meant as a life-saving reflex meant to prevent anything else getting down into the lungs. My dad (a doctor) once got it from inhaling a tiny crumb of a sandwich while on an airplane, and recognizing and realizing what just happened, simply sat there appearing calm while waiting until the muscles around his vocal chords stopped contracting and he could breathe again, lol.
@DIVETALK
@DIVETALK 2 жыл бұрын
Yes!!!! This is so awesome. This is exactly what happens. I’ve actually experienced it a few times and I also remained calm but was quite relieved when I finally could start breathing again. I’m so glad you posted this perfect explanation! Much appreciated! Woody

My dad also experienced a laryngospasm! It actually got to the point where he collapsed. I heard him fall and ran upstairs to find him and not knowing what was happening, called for my mom and then slipped my arms under him and started doing the heimlich maneuver. My mom, a nurse, arrived quickly, took over, and I called 911. While I was talking to 911, my dad began breathing again and was able to get up and confirm with the dispatcher that he was ok and didn't need help anymore. My dad said for a moment it had felt like he'd swallowed his tongue (which is scientifically impossible). He was told later by the doctor that it was a laryngospasm and we had done the right thing. Man it was scary. Never happened again.

I experience this every once and a while, sometimes my own saliva causes that to happen. I never knew what the actual reason was. Just thought I was choking for no reason. As a lifeguard and PSD. Salt water aspiration is real. It's simply the inhailing of salt water "Drowning". With salt water if you inhale a small amount and get it in your lungs you can drydrown hours later and die, usually while sleeping. This happens because your body is trying to process the salt water in your lungs. It does this by adding more fluid to your lungs in an attempt to dilute it, then you drownd. This condition usually occurs when a surviver is pulled from the surf then refuses advised medical treatment.
@pretaxfrog4
@pretaxfrog4 2 жыл бұрын
Good point, but slightly inaccurate. The body doesn't try to dilute the water, rather the salt draws out the water from the surrounding body.

I thought this was going to be about farting in your dry suit. All diving is inherently dangerous. It couldn't be otherwise if you're going into a hostile environment where you can't live for more than a few minutes without specialised equipment. But the way we have dealt with that since the activity began is continually talking about things to gain and share knowledge, especially of where things went wrong. Current training, techniques and procedures are based on decades of this interchange. Divers refusing to shut up is probably the bigger issue.

Learning to dive is literally the best thing I have EVER done for myself. And this is coming from someone who was never particularly comfortable in deep water before as I was scared of sharks and rips taking me out to sea. So I seriously hope her researching and talking about these things doesn’t stop her from diving and doesn’t stop her subscribers from trying. Where she did explain some things well, I'll never understand why channels like this (TopTens, not Dive Talk) rarely do their due diligence. When preparing videos for my own channel, I try to be as accurate as possible. Even in areas in which I have much training, I want to avoid giving false information. Additionally, I did find it funny how most, if not all, of these topics are actually discussed by divers. Just another channel that doesn't do their homework. Another great video, Gus and Woody!

Even us non-divers out here heard about the the bends long before even watching Dive Talk, so I think it’s one of the most talked about things in diving because it’s important. I laughed at that part with y’all. 😂 I’ve known about that since I was like 8. I think there was an episode of the Wild Thornberrys where Eliza was too young to dive but wanted to save a whale or something and she ascended too fast and it affected her negatively. Maybe I’m wrong. Lol but between that and watching tons of animal planet as a kid. I think a lot of us know the bends is. 😂😂😂 Buttttttttt I didn’t know why the bends is called the bends and now I know thanks to y’all. Lol

So, what have we learned today, kids? 1. Sea snakes, although venemous, are quite passive. If you come into contact with one, don't swim away in fear but maybe dont squeeze the life outta them like Angelica from the Rugrats. 2. Yuri Lipski video is one of Dive Talk's most popular videos. However, it's not a good general practice to talk about the dead while doing a dangerous hobby. I get it. 3. Woody believes in octopus aliens, blowing up jetskis and pink beanie superpowers but he draws the line at saltwater aspiration. Woody has standards and I love it. 4. First rule about dive class, we dont talk about "the bends". Yet Gus and Woody talk about it ad nauseum in their dive class and the videos, myth busted! Jokes aside, I'm actually quite familiar with "Most Amazing Top 10" and while I can confirm that Lindsay Ivan is a strong swimmer, she's not a diver. As the channel has grown exponentially, their videos tend to be more sensationalised to please growing demand. I would hope that fans watching would see it as more of fodder for the masses and not necessarily to be taken as canon that's 100% accurate. But with humans you just never know. Great video guys! I really enjoyed this one. And if someone ripped my mask off, I'd stab myself in the heart... because they called it "goggles". Have a great week Gus and Woody:-)

I use to watch them when it was a smaller channel but got quite miffed when they used a photo that was copyrighted and the owner said “take it down or license the photo like you should’ve done in the first place”. Most amazing had the attitude of “We’ll give you credit in the description”. Being a student currently studying graphic design and photography, I was upset with all “I’ll pay you in exposure” that was happening in the industry. It might seem small but it felt like a slap in the face at the time.

Talking about the sea snakes being so deadly poisonous but not bitting, makes me think about how even though to me it's such a common knowledge thing that those granddaddy long legs spiders we use to let crawl on us and yes some would yank off their spindly legs actually have some of the most toxic and deadly venom of all venomous creatures but the fangs are so tiny they can barely make through even a humans first layer of skin, yet I still run into people who say "FOR REAL???". RE: her bends comment; there was an episode of GI Joe in the 80s/90s(?) that literally ends with two characters being put in decompression chambers due to fear over the bends. So literally millions of kids saw/heard their favorite cartoon characters talk about it. (Have you guys analyzed that yet?)

Thing with venomous creatures is it takes a lot of energy to use that venom which is why most of the dangerous venomous species tend to use it as a last resort and avoid humans or threats instead of seeking them out. We just aren't worth it lol.

Martin Robson isn’t paralyzed, I could be wrong but I thought he had a successful recompression. I need to look this up. Martin Robson, a former Royal Marine Commando, began diving with the military in his late teens. He is now one of the best qualified Tec Diving Instructor Trainers in the world, teaching courses with PADI, IANTD and both of the major Cave Diver training agencies, NACD and NSS-CDS. As well as cave diver and rebreather training, Martin is a consultant for the new PADI Rebreather and Sidemount courses and is currently conducting Instructor and Instructor Trainer courses to launch these new PADI rebreather programmes. He is also a co-author of the PADI Rebreather and Tec CCR manuals. He’s still teaching and training according to this.

So, upon a quick search, you find out that the narrator was wrong about Martin Robson. Yes, he did get the Bends, yes, he was paralyzed (temporarily). He was placed in a recompression chamber in Sochi, and made a full recovery, walking out on his own. He owns a dive school in the UK, and still teaches classes today.

I'm betting they are talking about dry drowning, where you get very tiny amounts of saltwater in the lungs and the body reacts by pulling in fresh water (from the rest of your body) in an attempt to get rid of it. Can also happen in freshwater though it is slightly different. Happens to kids most often.

The a recreational diver I love talking about sea snakes. Cause I know they are super docile and passive. I also like talking about GWS's. I would love to see one. Ok last edit, we talk about these things for education. If we made a mistake and what not to do etc. Not because of some great taboo or curse or stuff. It's just so we don't end up on one of these lists. Oh and you can talk to fish, Gus.

26:42 I recently lost a friend who died during a skydive. She had deployed her parachute normally, had released her steering lines normally, and then stopped steering her canopy before landing in a field without any further control. Turns out she had had a cerebral hemorrhagic event. The first responders believed that she had died before reaching the ground. It should not be considered a skydiving fatality, but it probably was. Also our sport has been described as a dangerous activity that can be done safely. I would say the same thing about cave diving. Love your channel . Keep it up!

21:57 I remember my instructor told us that what you eat before the dive can affect your behavior. For instance on of her divers had a redbull before the dive, and at 27m (90ish feet) he tried to give a fish his 2nd stage Reg to give the fish air.

It's what their audience wants, sensationalism. I had never heard of MrBallen's channel prior to Dive Talk reviewing some of his stories, despite it's size. Checking out a few of his other true crime stories that I was familiar with caused me to instantly block his channel from recommendations; These channels aren't even remotely concerned with accuracy, they're concerned with people ignorant of the subject tuning in for the length of the video. "No OnE tAlKs AbOuT *THE BENDS*" Ugh..

The weirdest thing about the Great White story is that the diver somehow thought swimming around just out of reach of a Great White was any safer. Great Whites can swim up to 35 MPH, if it wants you there's no way you're going to outswim it.

Yuri is no 1??? I liked your gold finding video best :D As a former DM in Western Australia, we had a very curious sea snake that use to look out for us and swim with us - the ultimate in underwater grace. On a drift dive I also once saw a massive shark - too quick past to see the species, but unusual to see a shark resting on the bottom of the ocean, facing into a current strong enough to put a good passage of water over its gills. We once had a big dead tiger shark die in our dive site and one DM/instructor who found it, strategically placed it to give the next group of us the fright of our lives finding it just lying there (very much alive we obviously though at first). Diving isn't the place for pranks, but the lead DM was me (by design I suspect as was still DM in training) and they know I am unshakable, and can take a joke lol.

Absolutely loved the video, just if I could add one thing it would be that at the end she mentioned that the man was paralyzed from the waste down and didn’t scuba dive anymore. I just wanted to say that as someone who can’t use their legs, I was still able to gain my scuba license and I absolutely love diving. So for anyone else that may have a physical disability it is possible for you to dive. Sure we may have to adapt but who doesn’t.

Sea snakes and sea kraits aren't the same, but both are non-aggressive and don't want to be around you. So if you let them be, they will let you be. Don't go on the myth that the can't bite you because of their small teeth, I've seen one catch and swallow a huge morray. Still, they are very docile and very beautiful to watch.

I remember when I was a kid growing up on Guam, I met a freediver. I looked into the water he dove in and saw nothing but sharks, barracudas, and stingrays. I asked him how do you survive those predators? He told me, "never overstay your visit and respect the hosts. You are a guest in their house." Never forgot that
@shable1436
@shable1436 2 жыл бұрын
The curiosity of predators is what usually happens when attacked, or they are reacting or defending their space, we humans don't understand personal space between species, and safe distances between various species, you can look at land animals for example, and how close wild animals will let you get to them before they either run away or run towards you.

About the sea snakes, there are dozens of different species. Most are quite passive, some are quite aggressive, and several have fangs plenty long enough to puncture well through a suit into your skin. Don’t just treat every one as harmless because the few you’ve interacted with were docile. Especially in the Indian ocean and western Australia.

Flood and clearing is a skill that we are taught in our open water course. We should be able to handle clearing our mask when flooded with water. Let's see if I remember my DT trivia. You can take a regulator out of your mouth with an open circuit (like buddy breathing), but I think that is not an option at all with closed circuit. Guess that would be a nasty dive if you are on a rebreather...
