In this Dividend Unboxing video I reveal all of my dividend passive income from stocks and shares and Premium Bonds Prizes for June 2023 as well as which stocks I’ve been buying and selling in addition to upcoming Ex-Dividend and payment dates. I make good use of a stocks and shares ISA so all my passive income and capital gains are completely tax free. I find dividend income streams highly motivating. Not only do I receive income from stocks and shares, but also from Premium Bonds through National Savings and Investments (NS&I). I have the full allowance of £50,000 and I use it as my emergency fund so I don’t have to sell my shares and I can let the dividends compound over time. The current holdings of the companies paying dividends in this video are as follows.. NS&I Premium Bonds (50k), BAE Systems (10.6k), Bluefield Solar Income Fund (3.3k), Unilever (32.7k), BP (26.2k), Tesco (8.3k), HSBC (10.8k), Shell (30.3k), The Renewables Infrastructure Group (2.9k), Imperial Brands (8.1k), ISF(19.3k), IUSA(18.7k), VHYL(6.8k)

Had a bit of a battering lately with many of the companies I own falling in price. As far as I can tell, this has been chiefly due to the interest rate hikes. However, long term I'm not concerned and my monthly dividends keep rising so it's all good. Great video mate.

I bought 10k of M&G in the mini crash last week, yields at 10.3%, could not resist it. As share prices get battered when our poor inflation figures are announced, I’m assuming that the equivalent bounce will happen when we finally start to beat inflation. So good time to buy this month? My VUSA has been the most encouraging though, the US seem to be entering a bull run

When I started ETFs were not mainstream and I hadn't even heard of them until several years later. I also couldn't buy individual overseas stocks on my platform without opening a very expensive international trader account. I kind of got accustomed to buying individual UK companies, however as the years have progressed I've got more into ETFs and this will definitely continue.

Excellent. I love income producing assets. I have dividend paying stocks in my ISA and SIPP, whilst holding BTL property - both produce income. I don't care about the price of stocks or property. I wish for a massive crash in stocks and property so I can buy more in both. Never, ever sell, just enjoy the compounding effect. So many people go after the capital gain, which yes, will occur over a longer time frame, but too many chase the gain and miss out on the income. I like to keep it boring, collect the income, re-invest, and repeat.
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor 11 ай бұрын
Thanks. Very similar to my strategy. I don’t have much experience in property however except for the house I live in. The compounding effect is really powerful over the long term and just like you I try to keep things simple. All the best on your journey.
@0runny
@0runny 11 ай бұрын
@@TheCompoundingInvestor Thank you. BTL property is not as passive as most think, and you need to be sure to able to mange the debt, i.e don't over leverage, as we are seeing now, where those that have over leveraged are in big trouble due to rising interest rates. The interesting thing is bonds, yields are getting higher as BoE rates are rising. Which brings on the question - should we switch from 5%-7% dividend returns to 5% bond returns - the latter are more consistent, but stocks have the potential of growth.

Another great video and it's good to see the near continuous increase in average dividends. Over the last few months I've been focussing my investments on the following: - A very broad FTSE All World Index ETF (VWRL) - which now makes up circa 20% of my portfolio. I generally prefer this to an S&P500 tracker as I'm more concerned that most about the current values of several big US companies.; - Barclays, which is well very capitalised and seems too cheap to ignore; - Britvic, which has been a reliable staple in my portfolio since almost day 1; and - Legal & General, which again has a very attractive price as of late.

Having watched your videos for a number of months, I basically followed your formula....in effect, picking some of your recommended shares. I decided to invest £10000 and basically buy shares in 10 companies.....so £1000 in each. This journey started 13 months ago. Two of the companies splintered so I know have 12 companies as opposed to the 10 I started with. My pot currently stands at £12500.....so I have made £2500 in just over a year. Without doubt the best buy was Rolls Royce.....which have nearly doubled!!!!! I have not added anything, just let me pot start to snowball. Thanks for a great site...and sharing your journey.

Premium Bond analysis is a little misleading, the 'average' rate is 3.7% but that is based on the mean. There are some massive prizes with very remote chances of winning included in the calculation. It is important to know that if you have less than £10,000 in PBs then your chances of winning anything are very slim. If I recall my calculations it's only worthwhile when you have at least £20,000 invested.
@TheCompoundingInvestor

It’ll be interesting to see your average monthly dividends at the end of the year. I’m thinking £1500-1600 a month. I keep watching the US market waiting for it to drop but hasn’t happened yet. So many geopolitical factors occurring simultaneously (ukraine war, russia in general, chinese birth rate dropping, deglobalisation, inflation, robotics, AI) so it’ll be interesting to see how that affects the corporate world and who the winners and losers will be.

The thing I don't get about chasing dividend shares is if you get dividends of 6%, but a capital reduction of 7%, that's still a loss. Great dividends payments, but you've actually lost money (on paper). I think that's why I prefer a fund like FT-100 and S&P500, where you're not concerned so much with dividends as overall capital gain (I reinvest dividends). Some companies, for example Berkshire Hathaway, don't pay any dividends at all, but it has certainly been very profitable to be a shareholder...
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
You make a very fair point and I know dividend investing is not for everyone. I find it motivating and it encourages me to stick at it for the long term whereas with growth investing I’d lose interest and probably would have given up years ago. I do expect capital growth as well however. The following video will show my capital growth this year as well as since I started if you are interested. Just skip to the last few minutes to see the totals. ETFs were not mainstream when I started but I’m buying more of them as time goes by these days. £400,000 Dividend Portfolio Update May 2023 | Stocks And Shares ISA kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gLmHqsV5zdHHlqc.html

The value of the portfolio does not motivate me. It can change so quickly. At the start of the pandemic is crashed from 230k to 170k in what seemed a few days. It’s the dividend which motivate me and my ultimate aim would be for my monthly average dividends to exceed my wages from my full time day job. Doubt I’ll achieve that but it’s fun trying

As always, I enjoy your updates , 2 quick questions, your portfilo has around 20+ stocks, what do you use to analyse stocks? And when do you decide to sell/buy including any new companies?
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
I'm comfortable with around 25 individual stocks plus a few ETFs. As I buy mainly companies with large economic moats and who are virtual monopolies, I don't tend to do much analysis. We all need electricity, medicines and consumer staples like washing powder so I just buy these types of companies and simply hold for the long term. If the market is rocketing I'll put a little less new money in and save it for when the market is crashing when I'll put more in. Dividends go back in regardless. When my ISA is filled and there is no more room for that year I'll switch to low dividend payers which can be kept outside like IUSA, Croda, Rolls Royce, Diageo. In this way I can remain under the dividend tax allowance.

I also value that this stops me investing small amounts on an add - hoc basis, I have a plan that I generally follow each month. HL have recently removed dealing charges on Reinvested dividends, very welcome, possibly to compete with the newer app providers. So far, after several years, there has not been a stock or fund I have not been able to buy through HL. A huge plus is the customer support, their customer agents are available on the phone, no long waits, and have proven to be very knowledgeable. This, for me, makes the commission charge ok, peace of mind if I ever need assistance quickly.

When I started my platform only allowed me to buy individual UK stocks and I had not even heard of an ETF until several years later so I grew accustomed to buying UK large caps. Most of their revenue comes from abroad however as they tend to be global giants. 75% of FTSE 100 comes from overseas. Also If I invested mainly in the US for high dividends I'd lose quite a lot on the 15% withholding tax.

My main portfolio is with Barclays and they keep your shares separate from their own assets. In the event of Barclays going bust they cannot touch your shares as they are ring-fenced. I suspect other platforms do this too but you will have to check. There are probably very strict rules enforced by the FCA on how records are kept.

Hi. Great videos, very inspiring. But have a quick question if you don’t mind. Fairly new to investing( just the last year) but was looking at the ishares etf ISF. I know you can’t give advice but according to my Freetrade account it has a dividend yield of over 5%. Could that be a better way to go rather than individual stocks with a lesser yield if new to all this? Many thanks

Thanks so much. 5% seems a bit high to me for ISF. I believe it’s currently yielding 3.9% I hold it myself and like it a lot. If I was starting again from scratch I’d probably start with ETFs and ISF would be the main one. When I started in 2009 ETFs were not mainstream and I had not even heard of them until several years later. I was restricted also to buying individual UK stocks on my platform. @TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
Originally bought Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust as it had a very low dividend yield of 0.6% and therefore I could keep it outside the ISA. There is not enough room inside for everything. There is a dividend limit of £1000 currently for anything outside the ISA before tax need to be paid. I decided that I didn’t really understand the companies inside this ETF so made the decision to sell and put more into my S&P500 tracker instead. The yield is higher at around 1.5% but I should still be within the tax limit for another few years yet.

So technically you can put in a large amount of money just before the ex dividend date of a company, and then get the dividend and then sell the shares of that company?
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
I used to think that when I started investing but you probably won't gain anything doing that in reality. As soon as the shares go Ex-div the share price will drop by the same amount as the dividend so if you sell you will get the dividend but the share price will be lower so your overall profit will technically be zero.

@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
Yeah, different platforms vary in this regard. Sometimes there is a query / dispute between the company paying the dividends and the platform which receives it as to the amount of that payment. This can cause a delay and then the platform has to split up and distribute the dividend between all the holders which can take some time. It can be very frustrating I agree

Hey man, quick question, in a ISA stocks shares account, if I bought £1k worth of shares of Barclays and then sold after 50 percent gain, so now it's worth £1500 and money is now sitting in my ISA account, and I decide to buy Lloyds with £1500 does this now contribute to my ISA £20k allowance? Example now my allowance would be £18,500.
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
As long as the money has not been taken out of your account then you can sell and rebuy as many times as you like or even keep it all as cash. If you were to take £1500 out of the platform to your current account and put it in again then that would reduce your remaining allowance to £18,500.

@@TheCompoundingInvestor ah okay cool. @TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
@@smann7236 thanks for the suggestion, I’ll probably combine that with a general investing tax video at some point. Basically 30% of dividends would be withheld unless you fill in a W Ben form which your platform should hopefully arrange or supply. This will reduce the withholding tax to 15% on dividends. This is one reason that I wouldn’t invest in a high dividend US ETF because all those big dividends would be taxed. I’m not so worried about my S&P500 ETF as the yield is only around 1.5% so there are not much dividends anyway to tax. I’ll benefit from the capital growth of it. Hope this makes sense.

Well done for earning such a substantial dividend income. However it does worry me that many people might watch your video and not get the whole picture. To generate the income you talk about it the video, you've got £178,000 (of a total £228,000) in risk assets. You know the value can (and will) fall at times fall. With current stubborn high inflation, rising central bank interest rates and the risk of a recession, shares might be in for a rocky ride. The truth is nobody knows, but if the stock market pulled-back 20%, that would result £35.5k loss of value for your portfolio. Not necessarily a problem for you if you're in it for the long-haul, but people who get scared or need to sell their assets could crystalise losses that far outweigh any dividend gains. I do like that you showed the year-to-date share price value change, but I'm willing to bet that most people won't do the simple maths to work out that those rises and falls in the stocks and funds you showed would have wiped £2100 off your portfolio. Sure, your £1200 p/m average dividend payout far exceeds this, but it probably wouldn't if there was a significant downturn in global stock markets. Even a 10% pull-back would wipe nearly £18k off your portfolio, and that would take 15 months to get back (probably longer as the dividends would be smaller). People new to investing should understand that dividend paying companies typically don't grow their market cap as quickly as they would if they didn't pay dividends, for the simple reason they are giving free money back to investors rather than put it back into the company. The US stock market doesn't have the same desire to pay shareholder dividends and look what's happening to the market capitalisation there - the S&P500 is up nearly 16.5% YTD (I wouldn't mind that return on £228k!), whereas the UK index is almost exactly where it was one year ago. Hats off… you look like you're doing great, but I think that showing wads of free cash mounting up in a box gives people the wrong impression of investing. It would be really refreshing if content creators like you were really transparent about the things you've invested in that haven't worked out. If you only show the gains, you know that some people will just blindly copy your portfolio without doing their own research. If someone's worked for years to save £17,800 (1/10th of your risk asset portfolio) and is planning to use it for a house deposit, they might think it's a no brainer to copy you in order to earn £120 p/m without realising they could lose thousands in a downturn just at the time that they need their money. Investing is really good for some people, but definitely not for everyone - and there are lots of options. Right now, you can get more than 5.2% fixed rate in a cash ISA. If you had built up the same £228k in ISAs over the years, you' could switch, fix and make nearly £12k a year with no risk whatsoever. Then even a recession or downtown wouldn't effect you. Safe investing everyone ;-)

I agree with the fact that they are not great investments compared to other options but I do find them useful as an emergency fund.
