Join me today as I'm dividing and planting bearded irises in the garden. I recently took some irises out of a spot that was overgrown and too shady, and now I'm dividing them and replanting them in better locations. I also share how to store them, and/or pot them up to grow them on. Come with me!

I dug some Iris rhizomes one year and forgot to plant them. They planted themselves right were I had laid them, they are resilient little buggers! 🌸💚🙃

Wow! Those are some massive rhizomes. They must have been in the ground for years. I love reblooming irises! Mine have never gotten that large. I’m in Southern California in zone 10a.

I left some iris rhizomes on my lawn for the entire summer last year. They were gifted to me, and I had no idea where to put them, so I just left them on the lawn. No pot. Just the rhizome clumps. Finally got around to dividing them up in the fall. Planted them all and didn't have much for expectations due to my neglect. They all grew lovely this year, bloomed. Iris are super resilient.

Jenny you would know when you find an iris bore, they are like a big larvae that has bored inside the rhizome of the plant....(that area is usually called the "toe" by iris growers) When you find an iris bore all you need to do is cut it out and kill it and that will save the rest of the plant. Another thing is that sometimes on the older toes you could have a node developing that would be another flower, if you throw them in the compost you might have some new growth for a surprise in the compost bin. lol

This was very informative, Jenny. I've avoided tall bearded iris because I don't particularly care for their blooms. I have lots of Siberian iris. Maybe I'll give them another try and pick colors I want and not what the previous homeowner had. 😃

There are some really pretty ones out there, but I agree, being "stuck" with a prior homeowner's choices can be frustrating.

My Gaura took several years to create the wispy shoots you mentioned. I have a "mis-fit" area for my plants behind my shed. I put plants there that aren't performing in my regular garden, but I just can't get rid of. Many times, they redeem themselves and just look wonderful. I've also cut flowers from this area, without impacting the look of the rest of my garden. Last year, I tested some Yarrow that I grew from seed. I was afraid they would be too tall for my regular garden, so I placed them here. They worked out just fine, so I can move them to my regular garden. It's a nice space to experiment with. Also, I can use the area to let plants overwinter if I don't yet have a place for them elsewhere.

This is perfect timing! My variegated irises have borers. 😞 I decided to discard one entirety and the other two I am waiting for cooler weather to dig them up, inspect and replant. I definitely planted them too deep intially so this time I know how to plant them properly! Thanks for the info!

yes, I usually cut the roots between 4-6 " long before replanting.

Yes, you can, but over time I've come to leave them long if I can. They help anchor in the soil better if I've left longer leaf fans on them.

My previous borer holes were larger and the rhizome gets softer,hopefully you won’t find a borer looking back at you, that usually brings a EEEEKKKKK scream to me.

@teresakelley-waite7589

Siberian iris' like to have more moist soil than the tall bearded so I would check that. Also the more sun the better, they don't like all shade. Hope this helps you.

Have you found it true that bearded iris won't bloom if it doesn't have 5 leaves? I've always heard that and have noticed any I have don't but the 5 leaved ones do bloom.

I use Biotone because it focuses on root growth. Bulbtone would be fine, as woudl most other "tones", but the others have focus also on different aspects of plant health. Your choice, really.
