Thank you from New Zealand. I look at my clumps and have wondered where to start. Now I feel so much more confident at separating the tubers.

I had never planted Dahlias before, but I chose one this spring-a dinner plate dahlia, a big red one. I love it so much that I decided to plant more next spring in front of my house which we recently painted gray. I hope I can find enough of this same color.

Is there a video that shows the process of washing dahlias?
@salijackt9 жыл бұрын
A suggestion - it was my first year dividing them last year - I left them way too long because I was confused what the "eyes" were, so I left it too long and they started to sprout! Then it was quite easy to tell what was an eye :) I have lovely Dahlias this year, after growing them for seven (?) years not knowing I should divide.

Hello and thanks for your video. I love dahlias. This is the first time I have seen bulbs prepared so meticulously. I'll do the same. Right now the dahlias are in full bloom, I'm in the southern hemisphere. See you soon.

When the lady was cutting clump into 4 (in half and in half again), did she actually see eyes or just being hopeful they'll develop by spring?
@privateperson5769 Жыл бұрын
that was really good . I have a HUGE dahlia tuber and have no idea how to cut it up...it may have never been divided and is very old
@patriciasawyer22636 жыл бұрын
I se that you put more than one tuber in the ground. A clump of three or so. I have always only done one but it would be easier to just put the clump in. Does this cause more or less blooming? The one tuber has always given me a large full dahlia but it would be much easier for me if I didn't have to divide in the Spring. Pat

Thank you for the video. I live in California where the temperature maybe falls below freezing 5-7 days of the year. Do I still need to dig these out and store them, or can I leave them in the ground for next season?
@anthonyrobertson70625 жыл бұрын
Scott P No. If the tubers are a couple of inches deep they won't freeze because the groud is too warm for them to freeze. For added protection you can bury them under some mulch, but if you are having some warmer days after dipping below freezing at night they will be fine. The freezing temps have to reach the tubers. I've had them survive winters here in southern missouri even with days of not getting above freezing and snow, but they have to be shielded from north winds and get that southern sun to warm up the ground. Such as the south side of the house. However, that doesn't always work since we can get a week of very cold temps some winters.

Why must they be stored in peat moss? Can I cut, let air out for a day and plant back? I live in Zone 9 - Northern California. I've never over wintered and they produce beautifully on their own. The tubers are just growing very large now. Thanks.

Great video!! We buy from you for the past two years and plan on making it a tradition. My question is what do dahlias like more morning sun or evening sun?
@GardenTime7 жыл бұрын
They just love sun! Doesn't matter to them whether it is morning of afternoon. Just make sure they are well watered with good drainage.

After the tubers are washed, do I have to let it sit and dry it out before going to the storage? How long do I need to wait for them to dry and where do I put it to dry?

Two of my dahlia tubers didn't sprout and became all squishy and wet on the inside but the others grew fine. What did I do wrong? :(

if there are two adjacent tubers, one with an eye, and one without, wouldnt it make sense to cut them off together as one piece, so that the resulting plant will have access to the energy of both tubers. if that is sound, wouldnt it be logical to divide the tubers in such a way that none of the (big chunky) tubers were wasted, but were all left attached to an adjacent tuber that had an eye. if so, it would simply be a case of cutting the clump in half, then subdividing each half into portions with at least one eye, irrespective of how many tubers that portion contained.

Haft it, sounds funny. Thanks for the video.

So the secret is identifying the eyes, and not confusing the eyes with the tubers? Is this done every year?

@mommy2cutestbabyever oh if I get any little stragglers that fall off or get knocked off during lifting I'll still keep planting them, as you say you never know, but I will take a lot more care over my divisions from now on, I did quite well with my cuttings this year, (only the 2nd year I have been growing dahlias after losing 90% of my lily collection to lily beetle) so far I have had 4 out of 5 tester cuttings take root and the 5th is still green with standing up leaves after 6 weeks so I'll leave that till it roots or rots, the others rooted after about 2 weeks (2 different colours though) will be trying a lot more next year though, 🤞

Great video... Can't I just let them go to seed in the fall and grow from seed? Not sure which is better as I haven't tried either method to this point. Growing Dahlias for the first time this year and $8 for two tubers is pricey. Want to make more with my initial investment ;)
@GardenTime7 жыл бұрын
Growing from seed takes a few years, and they may not the the 'true' color or style because of cross pollination. You could end up with garbage flowers! $8 is not too pricey if you consider that, for the cost of a latte, you can get the right color and variety you want in your garden in the same year!

@@GardenTime growing from seed does not take years they flower and form a tuber the first year. I've grown from seed a few times and had flowers just a few weeks after my tubers ones flowered the same year I planted them. I have not harvested the seeds myself I but them so I know what I'm getting. I brought some more seeds last year and today I just dug up tubers with more than 5tubers per dahlia to store.
