Diving Dodd Narrows, BC (Blue Mussel Catch & Cook) Feb 2024
Join a big group of us for some epic freediving around Dodd Narrows, BC. The current was ripping and the visibility was mediocre, but our spirits remained high. Dodd Narrows is a passage way between Nanaimo, BC and Mudge Island, BC where tidal rapids form. Current can exceed 9 knots! The life clinging to the walls can be compared to Brownings Pass in God's Pocket.
On another note, the trail leading down to Dodd Narrows is in jeopardy of changing forever. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the proposed developments and join this facebook group to stay up to date. Cheers. www.facebook.c...

It's a great spot, I almost died there. A downwelling pushed me from 15 feet to 60 at the end of my safety stop and I ran out of air. Fortunately I was very close to my buddy and he had more air left than me. Strange thing about that is that when you're sinking with the water mass like that, there is no sensation of sinking, just pressure on the ears.

Thanks for the support man! The best option is to go to a local dive shop and chat with the staff. East 2 West freediving is in Victoria and they are awesome. They only sell freediving and spearfishing equipment. Divingsports in Vancouver is my go to shop. You can also reach out to some training providers and get certified. All said and done, it's an expensive buy in but well worth it.

Fast water wow! Looked like a river, and it's only tidal lol. All those muscles and I can get them without diving, via oyster farmers lol. Can't wait for my feed...maybe this weekend.

@@PNWSamson i mean, if you're feeling daring you could just go to some remote corner and hammer away. how would they know?
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 5 ай бұрын
@@stingray024ify that's true but unfortunately that wouldn't make a dent. A coordinated effort would be necessary over a period of time to start seeing results. I usually smash up my 12 though.

Man I can’t wait to start ocean free diving, I’ll hopefully soon get to get out. But the gear is so expensive! I’m saving up right now. Thinking I’m going to dive Lummni island because that’s close to me. Have you ever gone there?
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, it can be an expensive buy in. If you respect the gear you get years of use from it though! I've never dove Lummi but I believe it has some popular dive spots.

For the record, I can see sticking to the side of this pass but this is a main boating passage and one that everyone waits for slack current (same time you want to dive). It is not a place to dive out in the open as boats, especially sailboats have a very short window to make it though. In the busier months you will see boats waiting for the window to move though here. Anyone not familiar with these waters should not dive here unless they are with someone who knows what's going on with the marine traffic. If you do decide to dive here stick to the shoreline for safety.
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 4 ай бұрын
For sure. I talk about that in the video for that matter. Safety first. Keep a keen eye for boats over head. I mentioned it's a winter spot and boat traffic come spring and summer is insane. Our group had a solid safety brief before we dove as well, definitely not a beginner spot per say. Diving there is easy but you need to have a strong understanding of Dodd narrows that's for sure. I went into a lot more depth on my last video from Dodd but it never hurts to reiterate those key points. I appreciate the comment Brad, cheers.

What thickness wetsuit are you wearing? And are you wearing a vest underneath that? Just getting into Freediving here in bc and I’m a little reluctant about the cold. Everyone has been saying 8-9 mm and even a vest. Is a 7mm open cell realistic? Thanks a ton
