On Vancouver island does sea urchin fall under shellfish closures? Or is it kinda more like crab where it dosnt fall under that?

Its just like crab they don't get closed like shellfish.

Yeah exactly, they are not filter feeders so all good. I wouldn't harvest them from some areas though. For example, near waste water treatment plants, etc.

The west coast of the island is where it gets amazing! I don't see too much kelp between Campbell River and Victoria. I don't think I see any around Nanaimo. Don't get me wrong, diving around Nanaimo is awesome in its own way, but the life you see on the west coast is incomparable.

Very cool vid man, it’s 3am i could not sleep found this and now I really cant go to sleep. 😂 great visibility and a lot of life under the kelp. In the Bay Area we don’t see nearly that much when we urchin and abalone dive. Always love San Juan’s and Vancouver island. We won’t all move up at once. Hopefully. Great new gun. Can’t wait to see more vids from you bro
@PNWSamson8 сағат бұрын
Thanks Stephen! You guys have great white sharks to worry about too right? That mixed with bad visibility would have me a little freaked out haha. Especially while spearfishing. We don't always have conditions like that and depending on the area, big schools of rockfish are a rare sight. But we definitely had it good that day! I'd love to make it down to California one day and explore. Hopefully some kelp left by the time I do!

Grew up in White Rock. Use to go to the Pier often. Just to clear something up from your description below the video, the White Rock Pier is NOT in Surry, BC as you state but in White Rock, BC. That is why it is called the White Rock Pier. While Surry is a district that has several small cities and towns in it such as Gilford or Walley, White Rock is not one of them. It is it's own jurisdiction. Plus you little friend is a Tent Caterpillar, which are common in North America and not a invasive species, just a pain to people who's trees get infested with then. . Good video.
@PNWSamson5 күн бұрын
Oh, interesting. I always thought White Rock was a district within South Surrey. Just like Tsawwassen is part of Delta. Learn something new everyday! Thanks for the clarification. I'm familiar with the other orange tent caterpillars but I don't recall seeing the forest tent caterpillar in the past. They are beautiful. Happy to hear they are not invasive!
@foxymacadoo4 күн бұрын
@@PNWSamson No Problem. Plus the tent caterpillars are the ones you see that have h=large, sometimes huge, nests in trees that is made from the thread they make. You will find them on trees with leaves but not needles. They can badly damage a Apple tree or any other leaf tree in one summer. The tree will never be the same. That is why farmers etc destroy the nests ASAP

I'm not really sure what you mean. The fins I'm trying out in the video are made from fiberglass. The fins that I was using beforehand are 75% carbon fiber and 25% s-glass fibre. Lots of fins are made some pure carbon fiber though. The Cetma Mantras for example are pure carbon fiber.

That's not a bad idea! Love seeing Barrie's tactics to see them. Wearing fish nets on his head to hide his eyes or just leaving a camera at the bottom for a while. Definitely need to night dive White Rock. Next up for me will be Deep Cove. A friend spotted a huge fried egg jelly there the other day so that's my mission! Brittania is another spot though I've heard it's mid I'm still curious. Happy diving my friend.

recently stumbled upon your channel and love the videos man. I live up in Indian Arm, and was wondering how one gets started on something like this, checking out the local diving store site is a bit overwhelming - what wet suit and snorkel set would you recommend for a complete amateur?
@PNWSamson6 күн бұрын
Thanks, happy you're enjoying the content. Diving up the Indian Arm is my favorite spot around Vancouver. Up around Silver and Granite falls is beautiful. Hmm, yeah it can be a little overwhelming. I'd suggest going into the store and talking to the staff in person. Some manufacturers will fit your body shape better than others when it comes to wetsuits. Fit is the most important thing, but I'd go with a 2 piece open cell 7mm suit. The cressie and beauchat are really nice. Any simple snorkel will do and a low volume mask. Same deal, I'd try a few masks on to ensure you have a good seal. It can be a little stressful and expensive to buy all the gear but it's also super exciting. Once you have it and take care of it, it should last for years.
