This video is amazing. I just moved to Oregon and was planning on doing some camping this week, but because of all the fires I figured that's not a good idea right now, so was researching doing some crabbing instead. Catching crabs with a trap didn't really excite me though, so I was super excited to see you could free dive for them here. You just inspired me! Got any tips for a crabbing newbie?
@borce32
@borce32 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ethan, I would definitely not just grab some gear and hop into the ocean. Do you have any experience with freediving? First thing I would do is take a freediving beginner class. Even going down 10-15 feet has big risks and I want to see you stay safe. I would start slow with some practice in a pool and work your way up to a lake and then the ocean.
@ethan4165
@ethan4165 3 жыл бұрын
@@borce32 Yes, I've been spearfishing and free diving for a couple years now. I just meant tips specifically for crabbing lol! That's definitely good advice though.
@borce32
@borce32 3 жыл бұрын
Ethan I would hit Netarts to start with. You can see where the boats are and it should give you an idea where some of the crab are. Preferably go on low tide for a shallower dive. I’d use a dive float to make sure boats see you and you stay safe.

@borce32
@borce32 5 жыл бұрын
stanf9898 yup absolutely. With Dungeness crab you can grab their back legs and they can’t pinch you so you’re safe. Gotta be careful with rock crab though since they can reach all the way back and they can pinch you so normally I just grab them by the claws. Keep up the hard work man, next time you see a dungie you’ll know what to do 🙂

Liu Xuan to be honest its extremely hard to find the right conditions for a good visibility day. I’ve gone out on days where I expect good visibility and its complete crap. I’ve also experienced the opposite. What I normally look for is a small tide change, and low energy in the surf/swells. Its really hard to predict the visibility tho.

Hey Birds, I do not sell them. I actually only do it for personal consumption.
@o0hbomb0o
@o0hbomb0o 2 жыл бұрын
@Birds_of_Dander - Just a heads up, it's illegal to sell part or all of a fish, crab, or game animal you've personally caught or harvested to another individual with only a standard recreational licence. This is *especially* true regarding wild game species like deer, turkeys, elk, water foul, upland game, etc... However, you can get a highly regulated commerical fishing licence that will let you sell certain certain species of fish and shellfish, bu I think they're pretty pricy. Just remember to properly tag your recreational hunting/fishing game. Obey state regulations. Have fun, and be safe! On a side note, you can give part of your catch away to other people. But usually it needs to have been processed back at the home of the harvester before you can give any of it away.

Sharks are cool yo and also one of the most misunderstood animals. They will leave you alone generally. Pro tip : if you see a shark don't panic and start flailing around like an injured fish. Just make eye contact with it so that it knows you see it and should it actually be after you as a snack just maintain eye contact and they generally go away. Sharks are beautiful creatures and I hope the possibility of them being present doesn't prevent you from going out and having fun :)
