I love this channel because not only is it directly informative.. you are also indirectly informative. What I mean is when listening to amp techs (basically anyone I’m paying money to) if they don’t sound as enthusiastic or honest as you it’s an immediate red flag in my eyes! I can tell from watching you that you value and understand the service/customer relationship very well. Unfortunately dishonesty always has a place in this world but people like yourself help people pick up on the scent of that before any money is exchanged. You are the real deal 👌👌

It must be fascinating to open an amp that has so many original parts and know that you're one of the few to EVER see the inside of this thing. It's like amp-archaeology.

Wish I would have seen this video before I replaced the cathode bypass caps on my ‘66 Deluxe reverb. Using the old cap’s ground wire in that way is a lot easier and more tidy. Also I didn’t twist the 2 caps lead’s together so it’s just a mess of too many wires at the hole. Also I think I used too much solder and when I tap the board in a certain spot all the bass goes away on the vibrato channel. 😅

Fascinating. Uncle Doug told me to use 1watt screen resistors because they were chosen to match the math of Ohm’s Law and if they fail it protects the OT and power tubes. I was gonna use 3w like you did here bc Rob Robinette says to. Im curious if you agree that the schematic valued 1w act as a sort of protective fuse like this or simply need to be replaced too often vs the 3w. I took Uncle Doug’s advice this time. Thanks man!
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 6 ай бұрын
I find 1Ws can give false failures just from normal heat in operation. If you want “the best” option then install an HT fuse. Much less expensive for an owner to change a fuse than to have a tech change resistors. Most Fender power tube failures involve the heater circuit, and I do put 1/2W heater balance resistors in to be “fuses” in case of a short, as real fuses are not ideal in a heater supply due to high inrush current.

I had a sneaking suspicion that you would be adding "check / replace bias supply diodes" to your list from the last video.

Man that thing sounds killer...clear and rich in all the right ways! Funny you mention the 12at7 in the PI. Was just recently looking at some schematics for some old fenders and noticed the choice to use 12at7 on the PI that are biased with values appropriate for a 12ax7. Suppose its been long proven to be just fine.....but curiosity has me wondering if theres anything to gain (other than wasted current) by modding these more toward what a 12at7 would expect... maybe something like 18-22k on the plates over a shared 100-220 ohm at the cathode?
@PsionicAudio

See the ‘70s Fenders where they changed to a “more optimal” AT7 circuit. Pros/cons each way. If you do the ‘70s just remember they made the input cap 3x too large.

After seeing Brad's recent video of a late-model Hiwatt with the hybrid turret board / printed board, the Fender eyelet board looks even more disappointing. I get Leo wanting to save a dime at every turn. And eyelets rather than turrets is an understandable choice. But the board material just makes me sad. On the other hand, it keeps guys like you in high demand. I reckon part 3 will feature checks for DC leakage and remedies among other details?

I have a '66 bandmaster that I bought as a heaping pile of junk, but is now one of my best amps. The normal channel is excellent. How much of a volume/gain difference do you have between the normal and vibrato channel? Seems the tremolo circuit really loads the vibrato channel down and kills the gain.
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 6 ай бұрын

Would using a higher value cap on the bias board change rhe sound at all ?
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 6 ай бұрын
No, the only consideration is the larger the cap the longer it takes for the bias voltage to be fully present. And you don’t want the bias to take longer than B+ if you have a SS rectified amp and don’t use standby. Bias must be present and stable first.

@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 6 ай бұрын
I haven’t changed any of the CCs in the signal path. While CCs can exhibit noise it’s far less of an issue than people think. Odds are your issues are the ‘76 having a heavily waxed board which usually becomes conductive.
