His control looked much better in his AAA starts. Gonna chalk it up to nerves, the atmosphere at the ballpark was incredible but probably intimidating. Bet you he’ll look sharper next start

I feel like those sliders should be classed as two different pitches. Totally different break and speed. He's even talked about being able to manipulate them and his AAA catcher said sometimes he'll call for a cutter even though Skenes doesn't throw one if he wants the shorter break slider.

Even though I’m a cubs fan, loved watching this sequence on Skenes. Great debut. Your analysis is fantastic. 👍 I love (hate) his slider!

i saw passan say he's most similar to degrom but honestly he looks like a dude that is gonna be a whole new guy that can't really be compared to anyone else, his size and velo is insane
@andrewbloom7694
@andrewbloom7694 Ай бұрын
The biggest thing I think is he has a chance to STAY as dominant as degrom was. Hes 6'4 but only weighed 180ish lbs at his peak, thats a pretty small frame for that much force relatively speaking. Whereas Skenes is built more like Chapman, whos also about 6'4 but has the back and shoulders of a powerlifter. And Skenes has a couple inches of height on them both too, which at least in theory should mean less effort for the same velocity, like how stanton and judges longass arms give them that massive leverage. I think his body is much more likely to withstand the stress of constant triple digits for a good number of seasons.

It would be cool to take a look at the brewers Robert Gasser’s first start. He pitched a day or so before Skenes so it was kinda over shadowed, but he went 6 innings shut and looked gross!

One of the pitches they were calling a slinker, a mix of a slider and sinker. At least the announcers were talking about that.

Splinker - splitter and sinker. It’s Johan Duran’s pitch, Skenes added it this year. This is what Jimmy is calling the “split fastball” in the video.

Hey Jimmy, love the show. I have a video idea for you, because I am perplexed. Statcast dropped the bat velo, barrels, square ups yesterday. For the most part, it's what you expect, Shohei huge barrels, Soto is a stud, Luis Arraez squares everything, G swings out of his shoes every swing. One thing that does not add and I would love some insite on: Mookie Betts. He has a short, slow swing. The guys he is surrounded by on the grid are all middle ops players. He seems considerably better than his grouping, and I can't understand why? Is it the angle he hits at? What makes Mookie so much better than the other players that swing like him?
@goldmember19-fh5ek
@goldmember19-fh5ek Ай бұрын
I did some digging because this comment intrigued me. It seems like the biggest thing is that Mookie's Launch Angle-Sweet spot percentage is pretty elite. His barrel% is actually middle of the road, but that's because barrel% takes into account exit velocity as well as launch angle, and his hard hit% is pretty middle of the road as well. It's not really surprising, tbh. He's what, 5-9, 175? He's just not going to swing as fast or hit the ball as hard as guys with 6+ inches and 50-75 pounds on him--mass*acceleration=force. But Mookie seems to hit the ball at a good angle when he does hit it, and he walks more and strikes out less than just about anyone. I don't think anyone would classify Mookie as a true power hitter, at least not like Ohtani, Judge, Stanton etc, who are capable of hitting 45+ HRs any given season, but more like a good, well rounded hitter, like an Altuve, J-Ram, etc, who have some pop, but also just hit the ball well and get on base a ton. And it seems like, after Trout, Mookie is the best we've seen this generation at just being an all around solid hitter. And TBH Mookie just might be slightly behind Trout because of their difference in height and weight.

The control over the movement of his sliders was fantastic, plenty of long time MLBers who throw slidera and sweepers cant mix and tunnel them that easily. And this was his DEBUT. Id imagine it will only get better as he gets more experience

that sweeping slider is crazy good. The splitter is also incredible, but I gotta give the amount of break on the slower slider an edge. I'm interested to see the 3+ pitches play off of each other ( splitter, fast slider, sweeping slider especially )

Man pitchers are so nasty today...It wasnt that long ago that throwing 100 mph was a huge deal and usually those guys would almost exclusively throw fastballs with the occasion offspeed and today so many can touch 100 mph with movement and good secondary stuff...I wonder how an average batter from the 1990s would fare against these pitchers today...

I certainly wouldn't say its significantly worse than those, Beiber and Burnes (in his first START) gave up more runs. And 2 BB to 7 K isnt bad

If Skenes pitches like many expect him to, then the cheap a$$ organization that is the Pirates will be forced to trade him by the time he reaches his arbitration years, simply because they would be unable to afford him. That is why I, being a long-suffering Pirate fan can not get geeked up over his arrival
@gnielsen07
@gnielsen07 Ай бұрын
They could get a couple extra years with Skenes if they offer him a big contract in the next few years. They’d pay a discounted salary from what he’d get in free agency, It just means they’d be paying him a hell of a lot more during his arbitration years. If they wait till his free agency comes up then they’ll have to trade him to a big market.
