What is an LED? A very basic introduction to how a light-emitting diode works. In the simplest terms, a light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits light when an electric current is passed through it. Light is produced when the particles that carry the current (known as electrons and holes) combine together within the semiconductor material. Since light is generated within the solid semiconductor material, LEDs are described as solid-state devices. The term solid-state lighting, which also encompasses organic LEDs (OLEDs), distinguishes this lighting technology from other sources that use heated filaments (incandescent and tungsten halogen lamps) or gas discharge (fluorescent lamps). Different colors Inside the semiconductor material of the LED, the electrons and holes are contained within energy bands. The separation of the bands (i.e. the bandgap) determines the energy of the photons (light particles) that are emitted by the LED. The photon energy determines the wavelength of the emitted light, and hence its color. Different semiconductor materials with different bandgaps produce different colors of light. The precise wavelength (color) can be tuned by altering the composition of the light-emitting, or active, region. LEDs are comprised of compound semiconductor materials, which are made up of elements from group III and group V of the periodic table (these are known as III-V materials). Examples of III-V materials commonly used to make LEDs are gallium arsenide (GaAs) and gallium phosphide (GaP). Until the mid-90s LEDs had a limited range of colors, and in particular commercial blue and white LEDs did not exist. The development of LEDs based on the gallium nitride (GaN) material system completed the palette of colors and opened up many new applications. Main LED materials The main semiconductor materials used to manufacture LEDs are: Indium gallium nitride (InGaN): blue, green and ultraviolet high-brightness LEDs Aluminum gallium indium phosphide (AlGaInP): yellow, orange and red high-brightness LEDs Aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs): red and infrared LEDs Gallium phosphide (GaP): yellow and green LEDs

Nice design. Try to sand the flat side of the lens with very fine sandpaper. So it will diffuse the light and you won't see those little blue squares any more.

Was that a neighbor that was lit up at the end of the video like a police helicopters spot light? Lol. Growing up in a place where our managers apartment was where I grew up never knowing why mostly every night before bed as a little boy I noticed that I would feel like it was more than just that, it felt like one of God's angels hovering in circles with that powerful light transforming our home from darkness to daylight till I would fall asleep knowing that I couldn't look at it or wonder why when I would need the sleep I'd I didn't want to feel groggy for catholic school in those days when it used to be called sacred heart. Ty,I'll try to diy it as you illustrated so clearly . God bless

with this build, you'll short the lifetime of the LED, use a constant current step up converter instead

ecopper1 yes it's true, i found out the quality of the LED's is fine when they are at about 5-7 bucks. I have one over 2 Years now in a diy mobile torch and it's happy :)

+TheScrappingJeahaha with dead I do mean that they work but do not draw the full 100 watt and that random lets on the die are dead. More expensive ones are better yes.

ecopper1 when some of the leds are dead, the other ones will die quicker because the other LEDs will get more current than they need

Don't you lose a lot of the light having the lens so far from the LED? If that's a Lambertian radiator, and it probably is, sort of, then you'll be wasting 50% or more!
