The overall reaction is: Au (solid) + HNO3 (aq) + 4HCl (aq) → HAuCl4 (aq) + NO (g) + 2H2O (l) This is one of the few ways to dissolve the relatively inert noble metal gold. Aqua regia is able to do so because of the combination of an oxidizing agent (nitric acid) and a complexing agent (hydrochloric acid providing chloride). Individually, neither nitric acid nor hydrochloric acid can effectively dissolve gold on their own. The mixture of the two acids is required for gold dissolution to occur efficiently. So in summary, yes the acid mixture formed from nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, known as aqua regia, is indeed able to dissolve and solubilize gold through a redox and complexation process.

$75.06 a gram here for 24K, as of today. $2,334.50 a ozt I think. I just melted 5.2grams today, I expected more. But, after 4x refining, it's very pure! I'm sure I lost a little in filter and evaporation, even fizzing from Urea likely made some of my gold splash out. I need another 1.7grams to add to it yet. Will be my wifes birthday pendant. I want it to be at least $500 melt value.
