I always prefer a 2 way, but it's always so cool to make a single driver sound amazing over a broad band. I've used the Hi-Vi in a MTM set up, and love them very capable drivers. When paired with a Walnut, they shine. I do like the Dayton PCs.

I want to say GO PS95 but I've been curious about those newish PC83s... So I guess GO PC83!!! They seem to be a great value at that price with a copper cap, that's some never seen before stuff!! And if they end up being not as good in the top end as the PS95s, it's going to be rather easy to add some ND16s with a simple 6db xover into the mix. And MAN am I eager to see what you end up doing with that Ultimax 8". 'Gonna be good! Nice series, man, looking forward for the rest of it!

Pc83!! I used the 2.5 inch one (pc68). It's an excellent bargain. Just be sure to not cross it over too low.

I haven't listened to any of the drivers but from a frequency response graph point of view i'd say the PC83-4 looks better, as it is a bit more linear in the mid range and a smooth, though bumped up, high end . The PS-95-8 is the better looking driver of them all, nice and pretty cast frame an nice looking frequency graph but with a dip in what I would consider an important part of the mid range. The 2 way version i think would produce the most balanced sound . I think a nice driver for the 2 way version would be the ND90-8. I also don't like the hi-vi looks. Tough to chose as they are all good options but in the end i'm split between the PC83-4 for the 1 way version or a 2 way.

Will you do a video on choosing the Amplifier to go along with the drivers? I've been going through everything I can find, but there aren't many resources out there on this topic... Otherwise great videos Kirby! They've been a wealth of information on a personal project I'm undertaking! I emailed you about it if you can find the time to lend a hand, but your videos have been an amazing source of information! Thanks!

The PC105-8 is the 4" version of the PC38 that I used when I "upgraded" my Minimus 7W's. When I bought them I mainly got them because they fit in my box, they were affordable, and they looked good for the price. I really wasn't looking at the specs at the time so I wasn't expecting much out of a $12 woofer. I was very surprised when I got them and the new caps put in. It was almost a night and day difference. They're crisp and detailed even if they don't really have much for bass. But that's what an 8" subwoofer is for right? :)

So i bought some PS95 a few weeks back to start working on a project. Never started said project and now moving into a new house and i dont want to take my old school floor speakers into the living in the new house, I figured i make a sound bar now. My problem is i already have a 10 inch sub that is plenty of bass for me but i dont know what to buy Cross over wise to let me hook up the 4 speakers i have and then have a rca out to go to my powered sub. # can build anything but wiring is my down fall LOL

Hello Kirby, awesome video thanks for the info. I have myself 2 Sony speakers to which I connect to an amp that gives the output from my computer, however I want to make a curved (almost crescent saped) soundbar which will be connected to an external power supply, should I have crossovers and capacitors for the woofers and tweeters respectively? My tweeters are not in a good condition which ones should I get. I am in India Goa. Please advise.

I found out recently that the Pc83 don't need a tweeter. It is so strong in the high frequency range... Acoustic guitars, natural reverb, high pitched vocals and brushes ( jass/blues) sound intens and natural.... So my vote.. Pc83 stand-alone or backed up with the tweeter.... ( although it does not need it at all)... Thank you for your efforts and showing them to us...

Definitely go 2-way. I vote the PC83-4. A little better efficiency and better off axis response in the higher frequencies. I think that would be worth the little dip in the 350-500 range.

2 way please. Full range drivers attenuate highs way too much imho, but I do understand that some may like that. Since this will be used with a TV, speech intelligibility is pretty much a requirement. Consonants sound way more defined since I added tweeters to the center channel in my HT.

I feel as though I'm probably going to be swimming against the current, but if one can get good frequency range with the fewest number of crossovers one is ahead of the game because of the horrible things crossovers do with phasing at and around their crossover frequencies. For that reason I would choose a single wide range driver in the soundbar to go with the already selected sub-woofer: PC-83-4, 3 inch driver.

You can't judge a driver by it's stated response range. Looking at the response graph will give you a more accurate view of it's abilities. Drivers can have many issues that need addressed like, rising response, dips, peaks, and cone breakup. You can crossover to a tweeter before these issues are a factor. For full range you can use a contour filter. Example, for the PS-95 use a .45mh inductor followed by a .60mh+12UF+25ohm wired in parallel. This will flatten it's response.

Most important is to decide the type of design, where the drivers are positioned on baffle, then impedance and sensitivity needed.. then match good drivers ( now have a range written down)..thats what I do anyway.

As much as I like your videos (and I would like to do something like you are doing in the future and not alienate you) your videos are increasingly becoming guides on how to use the Parts Express website. Personally, I would love more videos on theory but of course, we all have our preference. Besides, please keeps vids coming because you, 123Toid and Impulse audio are my YT favourites.

Interesting way to choose your speakers .... I would rather look at the TSPs and then look for the right loudspeaker for my available loudspeaker housing volume. Because the specified frequency response is far from the one you have in the case.

Does the lower frequency of a two-way sound better than the equivalent of a single full range driver? I know it's difficult to compare apples to apples, but I'm wondering if say 60Hz on a woofer sounds just as good as 60Hz on a full range driver.

It's the same. A full range driver just has no coloration from a crossover

I'll probably be one of the few to say go with a 1-way soundbar and use the pc-83. I think everyone is well aware of the ps-95 and how well it performs. Would be nice to see info on making the 1 way sound better, and using the super budget variety pc-83 over the budget variety ps-95.

Kirby... I really love your videos, ok you have a partnership with dayton and that's ok, but please... There is so many brands and good stuff...not only dayton :/ The famous vifa tc9fd18, faital pro 3fe22, fostex fullrange, scanspeak, visaton b80 etc etc. Selecting drivers about their frequency range on a data sheet... You should talk aboit sensitivities, woofer material, enclosure needed based on t&s parameters etc etc.

I think of the options listed there the PS95 would probably be the best pick. It isn’t quite as flat through the midrange as the DS90, but it has lower distortion and the phase plug helps with off-axis response, very important for a sound bar. Personally, my go-to small form factor full range driver is the FaitalPro 3fe25, but it’s a bit more expensive and definitely has a “pro audio” look to it.

Kirby I have a doubt I want to build a speaker system with two full range speakers of 40W to 50W and two tweeters of 10W and a one subwoofer of 100W of diameter around 6.5 inches to 8 inches. Can u suggest any speaker and subwoofer(I have decided to use the ND16FA-6 tweeter) (and also the frequency what frequency i should use for each part) anyone else can also suggest

Dude it is fairly simple - what do you want? How much money, how big. Calculate the box, find out Crossover and that’s it... Kirby had a series of casts where he described (from the scratch) the choice of speakers, enclosure dimensions and crossover details. Though my calculations where somehow different - I still think that it is the best series of speaker DIY topic on YT. Invest couple of days in the topic and you will know what you want and how to do it.

Kirby has went above and beyond to provide all his known steps in determining what drivers any particular setup would be best to use. Watch the videos and go to his website to use the information he provides. It's a world of possibilities. You don't have the effort in you though. The comments section is not the place to request a tutorial style answer. Put in some effort dude. Or buy a kit

No love for Tectonic BMR? It only need very small enclosure, small enough to sit right in front of TV, wall mount. It's current trend on DIY community. 3-1/2" , 3" and lovely 2". 2 for each side for 3" model, or 4 on each side for 2" model.

You didn't talk about how the soundbar will be powered. I'm thinking one way, PS95. If it's being powered by a receiver, do we need to think about the resistance? The PS95 is 8 ohms, so it would mate a little better with a receiver.
