I could have used your help 40 years ago. Back then a 8" woofer was considered small. I think I will build and design a small speaker (what I consider small using a 8" woofer) using your techniques. Thank you very much for introducing me to the software now available. I have built the Overnight Sensations, Tri-Trix and GSR speaker kits maybe 10 years ago. I looked into your kits and they seem very reasonable. Wood working especially baffles have been my downfall to say nothing about speaker grills. You are a very talented young man!!!

Love your videos Kirby. The whole attempting to get a flat response in anechoic chamber measurement school of thought is an interesting one. Its obviously been well tested so must be the best approach, however in my head (newbie yet to build anything!) anechoic chamber measurements would be different to that of any variables the average room in the average home might be. It would be an interesting experiment to build two crossovers one to measure flat on your 6 foot garden rig the other to measure flat in your lounge. Then take measurements of both in different rooms in your house and see which yields the better responses.

I do my measurements exactly in the room and listening position. unless you carry your speakers around in the whole house it is the best way to suit them to your ear.

Turned out really nice! And as I mentioned in one of my comments about the hump in the low end, I thought it would pretty much disappear. Would have like to have seen some off axis measurments thought... I know most people may not know but they can actually be as useful if not more usefully than the in axis response, will show you how sell the crossover is doing.

Have you or can you do a speaker similar using the AMT tweeter from parts express? Looking for a better and taller speakers then the T652 air. That be good for 2ch and also Home theater, also a matching center and bookshelves for surrounds and heights with wall mount for Atmos.

Those look great!!! That TCP115 seems like a pretty crazy driver considering the cost!! I'm not too sure moving the port to the front would have the effect you were talking about. By having the port up front, you will introduce some (minor) midrange coloration but mostly, you would lose a fair bit of room reinforcement in the lower octaves. It might make for a more natural bass but certainly not a more present bass. Baffle diffraction doesn't seem to be an issue looking at the graph you measured tho! That graph is pretty insane tbh... Being that the two TCP115 are connected together instead of as a 2.5 way, wouldn't they integrate better with the tweeter as an MTM instead of a TMM? Better imaging ... anyway, as always, love your content and what you are doing for the DIY speaker community! Great video!

Thanks Jules! Really love these drivers, crazy value. Yeah, theres been some discussion on how it would change the sound, I think it would be fun to test it. A 2.5 would be a fun build with these. Yeah, a MTM would probably be a better setup. I actually might set both of those up and see how they sound! Thanks again for watching!

SMOG the 200hz bump you are talking about is only present in the “theoretical” graph that came from using the provided measurement from Dayton Audio and inputing them in a crossover design software. The measured response doesn’t have that bump. In a real world situation where the speaker is somewhat close to a rear wall, the location of the port WILL have a significant effect.

Hi Kirby and congrats for your work! I'm a bit newbie...You put 2 woofers in parallel and 1 tweeter, isn't your final impedance too low for classics class D amplifier?

I kinda built something similar out of reclaimed wood out of hard maple from a cabinet I found on the side of the road. But I used a passive radiator instead of a port . I used a different tweeter and crossover but they sound really good and I did a lot of reinforcement inside and I got kinda fancy with the box I really want to share how they look. I was inspired by watching your video and it's the first speaker I have ever built and I'm a good carpenter and when people see them they love the way I made them look I doubled the bottom and top with wood and with all the reinforcement they are like knocking on a rock. I thank Kirby for the inspiration and I want to send you a photo. I built them after work outside under a light with only a battery skill saw a sander and a router. I funny I was watching this again I was thinking about adding a small subwoofer on the other side of the speaker and bi amp it with a small sub amp but I don't want to mess with it anymore. But I was wanting to build a center channel with a sub in it and I'm waiting for you to the video out so I can build it . Thanks bro I got the building bug .

Hey Man, Nice vid. I see you mostly work with standard 4-6 inch drivers. Would be nice you can cover other sizes as well, Less than 2 inch for example, portable carry in your bag speakers. Or car drivers, dual-voice coil types. These are really challenging, in my opinion. This should be fun to watch and more importantly actually learn nice speaker design stuff.

Great speaker design! I also build a speaker with this tcp115-4 driver, but when i measure the response i get this huge bump from 100 to 500Hz as it is in the crossover design. I measured at a distance of 50cm and with more than 1m distance to every wall in my living room. Can somebody tell me why this is the case? I thought that the baffle step would fix this... oh yes, i have to tell you that my baffle is very close as in the video.

Is it accurate at all to just buy a calibrated sound monitor and measure my speakers db in my home? Ive seen a few of them on Amazon in the $30 to $80 range. I have a set of JBL L50's which had a replacement woofer put in by a previous owner, and Id just like to know if its higher or lower than the original woofer specs from the factory in 1979. Thanks.

I Made 104 cm high transmission line speakers with a 7” midbase speaker with a fs of 39hz and the box probally around that fs with a Amt tweeter sound epic really need to put iT in that Free software

Hi, i really enjoy your videos on KZfaq. I use to build some speakers in the past. I noticed that you use the omnimic v2. I will buy this mic also but can you tell me which software you used for the measures. I want to build a high power 4 ways speakers with a closed box for the subwoofer, and another close box for the second high woofer and a midrange and tweeter. I use the jbl pro 6 by 9 639 , which is a three way and i will add a subwoofer in that box, so all the driver will be close together for a coherent sound including the bass that is out of tune in almost all speaker installation. to divide my frequencier i will go to a fully digital crossover-amps solution which is easier to tune and should permit finer ajustment and go to 48 db per octave. when i was building speakers it cost me a lot in capacitors and coils and it was time consuming to solder everything .

Very nice video. Is it your very first video showing measuring results in your speakers? Having a look on the results, it is a very very flat response, but seems to be much better than expected in bass response for such a small woofers. Is that measurement really representative? What do you think?

I designed the enclosure to reach 55Hz at -3db, so I got pretty dang close to what I expected. Near field measurements of the port and woofers shows good response down to 50Hz and they sound great to my ear... so the measurements make sense to me. Thanks for watching!

I mean I hit a 143 on 2 12 inch explodes in a car and they didn't seem to sound like a "spl" system due to the clarity of my mids and highs and at the time my subs were only receiving roughly 200 watt out of the 600 they could handle rms

Yeah, the port is on the bottom right now because of the current cabinet design. I would need to redesign the cabinet to make it the correct length for the front. Thanks for watching!

Also if you do a slot port design your woofer can play really low the thing with ports is the tuning doesn't define how loud its gonna play just how low the port area determines the actual loudness from a spl stand point more port area is better especially in a small enclosure with small speakers this design you could have gotten away with a 2" slot with an internal width of that box a d just made it really long per say 20" in overall length and it would have decreased internal volume by maybe .75cuf but the thing with the internal volume is it doesn't have to be perfect when ported so. That .75 would have been entirely acceptable or you could have increased its overal size another .75 to account for the port area

Hi my sincere congratulations for the amazing creations. I have a question. In order to limit environmental reflections i see some makers putting felt strips around the tweeter domes. Saying that this could improve soundstage rendition. Is it a good idea ?

That's an attempt to reduce baffle diffraction, which is sound waves reflecting off the front face of the speaker. Since the sound is then coming from more than one place your brain has a harder time figuring out where things should be placed based on sound.

@@fortunefed8719 Thank you very much for the kind and valuable explanation ... but do you think that it could be effective ? because i was thinking to make a ring with a thick felt to be placed around the tweeter. I read that in an untreated listening room speakers with limited/controlled/narrower dispersion could give a better performance. Room reflections are the evil to fight usually.

You know if you crossover your tweet about 1khz-1.6khz as a minimum it'll bring out the clarity of the vocals right? I've always crossover my tweeter at 1k or 1.6k and then my mid is at 150-350 min. And I've always lpf my woofers at around 20-80 depending on lowest playablitiy. Idk how most feel about that but I can say that in a sq car audio situation you want a flat response on all possible scales so the best way of acheiving that is knowing your speakers "cone ripeling" point and kinda testing the waters with what sounds best to the ear 90% of all systems I've heard the tweeter sounds like trash almost like a 8khz hpf is in place with that being said a tweeter should never play that high minimally it'll cause the tweets to burn out faster than if it were to be tuned lower because like all driver they're supposed to move there's not much movement at 8khz and tweeters tend to vblow at that point one reason I tend to dislike passive over active x overs

Wouldn't a small portable-ish chamber, or even half of the verticle height of a closet turned into a anechoic chamber with modular pre-lined panels work? I've always thought it would work in theory, but since no one seems to have done it already? I must be missing something obvious. MUST the chamber be big?

The problem with a small chamber is that you will limit the lower frequency range that you can achieve in the chamber. Wavelength = Speed of sound/Frequency.

The cabs are quite small for twin woofers, a single woofer in the same size box would actually give better low end response. Porting will no doubt help though :)

They were designed to hit 55Hz at -3dB with a flat response. A larger enclosure might give more bass, but would give a big bump below 100Hz. If that's what your looking for, then heck yeah! But I wanted a nice flat response down to 50. Thanks for watching!

Port in rear needs wall to help bass response I believe....front port gives better response in my opinion, just an opinion.

bought a DAP from hidizs, stops turning on less than two months later, have to return it to china at my expense, remind me to not buy another hidizs dap.
