the thing about the glasses he said is true. i work as a projectionist in a local theater and have used the ones we give out and my normal RX glasses to calibrate the screen and it works, but i convinced the boss to get me prescription gunnar penta 3d glasses and it makes a word of difference when calibrating and watching the movie. i would highly recommend getting your own glasses (especially since some theaters just clean and reuse the same "disposable" glasses)

@Lyndir I use some Infocus 5400's. They have a new line of stackable projectors that look pretty sweet. I would recommend them. It's good to have a digital shift on the projectors to help with alignment.

Chrome spray paint, wide background paper, paint it carefully all at one time and you have a huge silver screen. I created 110 inches screen, works perfectly, NO ghosting and VERY cheap.

Interleaved is a different way of encoding 3D for playback. Then the 3D television (or other device) take the signal and splits it up to match the device. So, it's very different from polarization.

With a typical 3D projector you don't need the silver screen and realD glasses. You have to get shutter glasses because the projector alternates Left And Right instead of layering like this system.

The point about setting the rotation of the polarising filters is curious. Pure circularly polarised light should have no particular orientation so that shouldn't be necessary, but maybe broadband circular polarisers aren't perfect so there's some linearly polarised light left in too, which the glasses can deal with if you get them in the right relative orientation?

All 3D theaters use silver screens which are different than regular screens. Some use one projector and what's called a Z Filter by RealD. Others use two projectors just like the set-up I have here. You can get a Z-filter for about $1,500 but you loose half your brightness. The two projector set-up is more difficult to align but results in a better experience.
@kingcabvids
@kingcabvids 12 жыл бұрын
Not at all. In fact, the very first color screens were also silver because the reflectivity is great. You may need to turn down the brightness a little because it's turned up to compensate for the 3D glasses but otherwise they are great screens. Additionally, 3D screens in theaters are used for both 2D and 3D.

Probably not. There are some 3D tvs that use polarization but most use active glasses. It's a different method for separating the eyes.

@toby16custom Your glasses need to match the format of the video. If you click on the red 3D icon on a youtube 3D vidoe it lists some of the different formats. It's kind of like music. If you have a record you need a record player, if you have a tape you need a tape player. The format of playback much match the media.

Yes, however, the image may appear blurry because your single eye will still see both images. I would recommend still wearing the glasses so you see one clean 2D image. Make sense? Also, FY-eye, the strongest depth cues are all monocular.

I've never heard of using stickers for the effect. What you need is a polarizing filter. This may come with a sticky back and, hence, be considered a sticker. But it's primary function is a filter. Where did you hear about using a sticker combo? I'd be really interested in some new method I don't know about.

I have been thinking of doing something like this in my man cave, my question being however, does this convert or give depth to regular 2D video. Ultimately I was thinking of hooking up an XBox One or PS4 through an amplified HDMI splitter with the filters and glasses. Will that work without the software because I think the software would create lag in the game.

In this particular scene he had a reverted image. It was specialy designed to adjust the projectors. To understand how it works: Your mind resembles EVERYTHING you see from two images into a 3D vision. If you look on an object and quickly close one eye and open the other you see, that on your eyes the object is a bit displaced. 3D movies resemble this experience and give two displaced images. One for every eye. But your eyes shouldn't see both images. So one image is blocked/ unseeable for the other eye. To test the RealD 3D system: Go to a mirror wear your glasses. Close one eye. The other glass lense should be black or dark grey...

Do you output just one HDMI cable from the computer and split that into two separate cables that go to the projectors or is additional hardware required to get two video outputs from a mac? Thanks!
@kingcabvids
@kingcabvids 9 жыл бұрын
Actually, you can do either. Most 3D is formatted as side-by-side with each video signal squished into one half of the overall width. VLC player will allow you to playback a wall setting with half-resolution to each display. This cuts the one signal in half and sends it out to each projector. (note - I cannot remember the exact way this is done but I did get it to work once). The method I usually use is to connect each projector to the computer just as if you are connecting two displays. You may need to purchase an extra video card but, overall, it should be pretty straightforward. We just did a 3D theater for the Mt. Hood film fest which we ran off a single macbook pro. Good luck! and send any original 3D content my way. I'd love to see it.
@kingcabvids

I don't think so. They need to be pairs that match the glasses. You can test if they work by holding them up in front of a pair of RealD glasses. Each filter should make one of the eye dark when held in front and the other clear. The filters should react to the two eyes in the opposite way. If they don't behave this way, then it doesn't work. This is similar to what I do at 3:30 in the video.

Silver Screen = about $750, projectors (2x) = about $2,000, filters = $400, plus computer. You can do it with cheaper/more expensive components. This is a rough ballpark

Red & Blue (anaglyph) is a way of using color to separate the two eyes. If you use this method, you don't need anything special, it's built right into the color. So, you can view 3D in anaglyph on a printed page, regular projector, etc without any special tools. It's not as clean as the method here but can still work well.

Don't listen to Razor.. Yes, you can output anything and n any way you want with Stereoscopic Player. For this though you would need to open 2 versions of Stereoscopic player, (each playing in 2D!) - One outputting the left eye to Projector 1 and the other the right to Projector 2. The output from the 2 Players goes out separate DVI (or HDMI) outputs and are then combined in the glasses as polarized light. The player does nothing to 'polarize' the light that is a Physical Optical effect due to the special lenses. To further understand, you could play 2D left and 2D right on 2 computers and hit play at the same time.. For this Polarized effect you could use 2 Windows Media Players running and outputting 2D Left and Right eyes! (Although Stereoscopic Player is more useful and can output Left or Right eye separately from any SBS (etc.) 3D Video.)

I'm a little confused... So you have your 2 projectors connected to you computer directly (just like when you have dual monitors), instead of using a 3D video processor unit. I get it. But... so when you go to play a 3D video in VLC, how do you tell VLC to send the left stream to one projector, and the right stream to the other projector. If you could do another video where you spend a little more time showing the computer/wiring and software set up and configuration, I'm sure that would be really helpful to your subscribers/viewers. I just spent some time looking through VLC, but I can't find any way to make it do this. I also noticed in your video, that you have separate video files for the left and right. All my 3D videos are one single file (an MKV). What I do to play these currently on my 3D TV, is I open them up in VLC (which displays both the left and right side of the video split down the middle of the window), then switch VLC to full screen mode, then I enable SBS (Side-By-Side) 3D on my TV. My TV then merges the left and right side/stream, I put on my 3D glasses and away I go. So if I wanted to play the same 3D videos with 2 projectors connected to my computer like you, would I need to somehow separate my single 3D video files into 2 separate files, one left and one right, and then play each one at the same time? Any help figuring this out would be hugely appreciated.
@kingcabvids

You have two options, you can bring your sbs video into and editor, resize and export and two invididual videos. OR, you can use the 'video wall' feature in vlc to map to two projectors. You tell VLC to make them twice as wide as tall. Honestly, I can't remember exactly how I did it but I do know that was somehow it. Good luck! Feel free to ask more questions here. I'll do my best to get back to you.

Unfortunately, no. 3D works by giving each eye a 2D video and the brain interprets it as 3D. The good news is, you can still see lots of depth. '3D depth' given as the information between two video streams is only one of many depth cues. Loads of other sources of information are found in regular 2D footage. So, even though 3D won't work for you, you can still enjoy the sense of depth in 2D movies.

Five minutes of research would tell you; Projectors can be had for as little as $200 and rarely over $1000 for a good DVI one (of course you can find way more expensive ones, but they don't have to be). They don't even need to be 3D Projectors remember! It is two 2D Eyes being projected separately after all. Polarized Lenses are from $19 to $38 each. A 120" Silver screen can be purchased from $100 to $1000 and good glasses are $10-20. That means you can build the whole system for as little as: $368 for all the low end choices I mention, and: $1296 for all the higher end options! Considerably less than your $40,000 estimate. I wouldn't go play "The Price Is Right!" anytime soon if I were you! :~)

Hey! I found on your blog that if you have a Windows PC, then you need to use "Stereoscopic Player". One more question though, for the lenses, which ones would I need to buy? There are various circular glass lenses on this site. I want the ones that will work with RealD 3D glasses from the theater. www.apioptics.com/product/apncp42-105g-ar2/ Thanks again.

Yeah, those should work! I'd reach out to API and talk to them to confirm. They were really awesome when I worked with them. Good luck!
