Powerful DIY AC Air Cooler! Homemade AC Air Cooler with Air Conditioner "like" feel! (no added humidity). Easy Box-Fan Conversion! this thing blows a ton of cool air! the air temp dropped 10 degrees (85F to 73F) in 60 seconds! and within 5 minutes it was blowing 66F air. super easy to make too. all you need is 7 things... a box fan, bucket, small (AC or DC) water pump (4.8w 12v one used), 3/8" ID clear vinyl tubing (10 to 15 feet), scrap styrofoam, zip ties and two 'tube and fin' {hayden model 405} 'all aluminum' transmission coolers). the sheet of corrugated plastic (for the side panels) is optional but highly recommended. only tools needed are a screwdriver, utility knife, kitchen knife and tin snips *no power tools. build time: about 2 hours. to use it just drop ice, ice packs, and cold water (from fridge if possible) in a bucket or ice chest and drop in the pump. the cold water cools the fins fast. within 30 second they are freezing. then power-up the fan. (low for coldest temps) and you've got a lot of 'instant' cold air. box fans move a lot of air (even on low) so my living room (shown in video) was much colder in just a couple of minutes. (note that the fins are relatively wide-spaced on those hayden units so the fan pulls air through them like they're not even there - the fans speed is not affected).
A Few Notes: once completed the unit is very stable and the fins feel like their 'cemented' to the fan. it attaches very tight. (the physical properties of styrofoam allow that to happen). as the zip ties are tightened up the fins and fan grill are pulled together tightly against the blocks causing a type of bond. it holds everything secure so there's no movement, sound, shake or anything. they also allows the whole unit to be made without altering either the fan or the fins in any way. both stay in like-new condition. also, no sealants, caulks, glues, drilling, brackets or anything like that is needed. that's good if you want to move the unit to another fan at a later time. disassembly time is only 30 seconds (all you do is cut off the zip ties and pull the side panels off). *side panels are just held on with double sided sticky tape. if you like the video please rate, comment, sub (click bell) and share it around 🙂
other stats/extra info - the fins are light - combined maybe a pound. (no copper). also drains easy - serpentine horizontal pattern versus vertical. black tube and clamps come with the transmission coolers so no need to buy them. don't use 3/8" clear tubing for middle connection as it crimps up and water flow is affected. zip ties and panels come in white or black so you can match them to the color of your fan for a super slick look. AC pump can be used (i even bought a new one for this project *but ended up using a low power DC one). if you want to do this whole thing on DC i've got a video on how to make a 12v DC 20" box fan. it has the exact back grill so you hook on the fins the same way. a single 12v 100w solar panel (or 12v deep cycle battery) runs that DC fan and small DC pump.
tips:
video tips
1.) to easily install zip ties - bend them in the shape of a V before inserting into fan grill.
hand tighten a little at first (to position the fins) then go around and fully hand tighten them.
2.) to get a flat smooth cut of the styrofoam use a thin sharp knife and saw a lot (push down a little) - let the knife do the work. i used six 3/4" thick blocks (1/2" to 3/4" works best)
3.) remember to use 3/8" (internal diameter) tubing (versus 3/8" outer diameter)
4.) only use styrofoam for the support. wood won't work well. condensation may lead to a rot issue plus it'll scratch up everything and probably move around. the styrofoam creates a bond
5.) use a relatively small pump. large ones (with larger motors) warm up the water unnecessarily fast
6.) run fan on low speed for max cooling times
7.) to extend the life of the ice use an insulated container or ice chest
8.) use water from cold source (fridge etc...) for coldest temps
9.) sticky tape works awesome for the side panels - holds tight but can easily be removed if desired.

Thank you man, I needed a way to cool my quail shed. My birds were getting toasty at 95F, and thats with an exhaust fan and insulated roofing. I have my aquaponic barrel filters in there so i tapped the pump to divert some of the water through this. I have a couple thousand gallons of water in my system so plenty of thermal capacity to spare. Hooked up the fan to a plug in thermostat so its automatic. Got a good 10-15 temp drop and my birds are happy. Awesome idea with the transmission filters as I at first was thinking of using a radiator. This way is easier and less expensive. Kudos man!

that sounds like an awesome setup! i'm glad you made it! yeah, i've got some other setups (videos) with the heavy-duty style heat exchangers (radiators) paired with other types of fans (mostly DC powered ones). sounds like you've got enough cool water to even run those.

Made it. LOVE IT! I was skeptical at first but i did a test run and was amazed. I tried to get the 403 but they only had a 403 and 405. So I got both and made it work. I may get another 405 which is bigger and use the 403 by itself on a smaller fan. All in all. I am satisfied and thank you immensely for this video and concept. Also I am using my setup with an ac. I have an ac cooling one room with a high velosity fan pulling cold air from the doorway pointed at the back of the air chiller. So with the water cooling the radiator AND cool air behind and pointed at it, it is supercooling the air coming thru and the ice isn't melting because it's in cool ambient air. But I have another high velosity fan in front of it pulling that supre cooled air into the space i want cooled. It works great. YAAAAY!!!! BTW I am in HOT HELL CENTRAL.... Houston Texas. ARRRRGH!!

Pretty interesting idea. I imagine the fins between the metal tubes help to cool the air by providing increased surface area vs the ones you see where people coil copper tubing on the box fan? I happen to have a couple spare radiators off of my old dirt bike. They are smaller in size than these but much thicker and the tubing connectors are much larger diameter. My daughter is always warm in her room when the rest of the house isn’t too bad, so we don’t want to run the central air unless we need to and there isn’t a way to put a window AC in her room. Have several box fans, buckets, tubing and zip ties kicking around. Might be worth getting a water pump and giving it a try.

hi. that will depend on a lot of things. first thing that comes to mind is that the type of unit in this video also works as a heater (same with my last two videos). all three use these type of heat exchangers to cool but all you have to do is put warm water through them and then they work as heaters. they might be some of the best but you've got to have warm or hot water source. if you want to heat with pv solar ive got a few on that or you could go solar thermal. it's hard to pick one and say it's the best.

@desertsun02

hi. the pull is better because the air flows smoother. (the fins act a little bit like a barrier if you push air through). these fans have weather shielding and are specifically marketed now as worry-free for use in windows. plus with the radiator offset back 3/4" any condensation should drop off (and a drop or two through the blades is no big deal).

needs a drip pan.. a pleated filter over the back will balance the airflow & slow it down allowing it to condensate & collect the water in the air further helping remove humidity which is what we feel more. this will also cause sweating of the coils & the need for a drip pan. if you mount it above the bucket it can drain the condensate water from that pan back into the bucket. just leave a gap between the filter & coils so as not to get it wet. just a thought 😁

Is the foam pieces to keep condensation out of the fan? Can you just zip tie directly to fan?
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 3 жыл бұрын
hi there. very important - don't just zip tie it to the fan. it will wreck the heat exchanger (it will bend the fins making it unusable *among other things). the styrofoam is for several things. 1.) it's for protecting the fins. 2.) for offsetting the radiator from the fan to handle the condensation. 3.) to stabilize the fins onto the fan so the unit won't shake or move around.. 4.) also it absorbs any noise. it's like a firm cushion between the fan and the fins. 4.) keeps the whole thing running smooth and quiet.

hi. cold water is circulated through the tubing. the aluminum tubing gets cold and transfers that 'cool' to the fins. room temperature air is then pulled through the cold fins and by simply passing the air through the cold fins it's cooled down. it's amazing how well it works. i think that covers it. hi. i bought a 15w AC water pump on amazon but didn't actually use it for this. it is 237 gph but you only need a 63 gph (that's the rating of one i i used, and it works great). make sure it has a good lift on it.

hi, quick question, is it better to have to fan blow or suck the air trough the radiator ?
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 11 ай бұрын
hi. it's better to pull the air through the radiator. the radiator acts like a barrier in a lot of cases when you put it in front of the fan and slows the breeze way down.

Do you need to have the window open to use this or can i have it closed. Does it build up humidity?
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 18 күн бұрын
hi. since this isn't an evap. cooler you don't need to open a window. the unit doesn't create any humidity, it just cools the air. the air cooling units that create humidity don't use ice. they just use wet pads to create the cold air.

Please tell me where you purchase me the material for the side panels and the pump

hi there. i get the corrugated plastic (side panels) from home depot. they sells 2 by 3 foot pieces for around 9 dollars (last time i bought a piece of it). they sell it in black, white and/or clear. the pumps i get on amazon. they have dozens of that type of pump. search for 12v 5 watt pumps and most should work (or even buy AC pump)

thats a lot of transfer area, how long does the ice last?
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 3 жыл бұрын
hi. it sure is. probably the biggest one i've made. massive arctic blast. well, i've only used ice-paks and 36F water, but it holds on for quite a while (maybe 45 mins to an hour with only 2 to 3 ice paks and cold water). i'll have to experiment with larger ice blocks (maybe frozen gallon jugs) and a mix of cubes and more ice paks. plus i might start using an ice chest. time really depends on how hot the air is, how much ice is used, big or small blocks, how fast you run the fan etc...

i have a solar panel that charges all day a 12v battery that powers the fan and the pump ... now my mission is optimization and how to fully close the loop under 80 watts ( eg ice maker that turns on via an arduino and creates 8 gal of ice during the day for 8 hrs of AC awesomeness for sleep at night!!

Just make sure your freezer isn't inside the house or you will be heating the house to make the ice.
