In this video, I make my second attempt at cutting up a maple log with a home made sawmill. This time I just used a few bolts, and an old deck board to turn my old electric chainsaw into a milling machine.

I like how you did this on your own without doing the same thing everyone else is doing. Looks like you got pretty good results as well

It worked out better than I expected. Didn’t think the bolts would be stiff enough.

I started out this way years ago, made out of two camper jacks, the tall ones and bolted to a 12' rail that would sit over a log and I could lower each end with a 44" double ended bar and two o64 sthil chainsaws and two people and it was still a lot of work, now I have a lucus swing blade sawmill and I love it. Still lot of work but I can get more done in a day.

I would love to have something like that. Right now I have been looking at bandsaw mills.

Congratulations on hitting 1,000 subscribers . . . especially in only a year's time. Always nice getting something done for a fraction of the cost. When I had my Panther Pro chainsaw mill I tackled logs the same way with the pivot approach. Happy to subscribe. Congratulations again! - Samuel

Good idea when gadgets are so expensive. I have an old electric chainsaw i will give it a try. I've done this before with a gas chainsaw and it's faster, but I need a ripping blade that has sharp teeth and I think the electric will do fine with that kind of blade. I work with pine because that all we have up here. so if it's not green it cuts well. the first log I cut the round edges off then a straight cut on top, then I got an idea for a bench. I took the rounded edges, most toss these, but I cut two of them bench high and lag bolted to the log with flate top and went a little higher about7 to 10 inches, it created arm rests. Dan the log, or seating area was thick about 8 inches, but that's what made it look good then with the two rounded side the same length I bolted then to the log, creating the heaviest bench I've ever seen and it looks great. Sealed the bench because pine crack a lot. I found if I seal it with the right amount of moisture in it doesn't crack as much. It's fun work and i look forward to more projects. I only wish I was better at technology so I could share what I discover. Thanks keep them coming.

All you need is a smart phone! I want to get my hands on some pine and try making dimensional lumber.

That chainsaw milling is a lot of work and a lot of down on your knees. I did quite a bit of it years ago, but have graduated up to a woodland mills sawmill. Much more productive and better materials off the mill in the end. I learned a lot milling with a chainsaw though and it let me know I wanted to continue to mill, so was worth it in the end.

That’s what I am hoping to get soon. We will see if my side hustles pay off and I can buy one. The woodland mills is what I was looking at. I watch a lot of @sawingwithsandy and he has inspired me.
