Thanks so much! I have a 2001 ford f150 and it has the same alternator as yours. It has the exact same set up as yours. I followed your video step by set and had the new one in in a few hours. No complaints here! Great!

Thank you! Very clear and helpful. I'll be doing this tomorrow morning on my work truck. Now I know exactly what I'll need: 10mm, 13mm, 15mm and blue loctite. Done!

Did mine today thanks to this video. No need to remove the radiator hose, its not really in the way you can work around it easily. The old bolts had silver anti sieze on them so this job was done before by someone, so they came out easy, I dont think they need loctite

Thank you sir. @2:10 That trick on the tension for the serpentine belt would have taken me days to figure out. i had the thing done in 18 minutes at best. Big thumbs up.
@artfd35525 жыл бұрын
I left the radiator hose in place. I levered it out of the way with either a pry bar or a piece of wood. My F150 has no A/C, so my alternator was much more accessible. The routing of the serpentine belt on my F150 is different without AC. I bought a 25 inch breaker bar 1/2 drive at HarborFreight on sale. This was particularly handy at the junk yard where I got a used alternator from a junked Ford Explorer. I had to use a lot of leverage to remove the old alternator & actually broke a cheap socket early on. I needed a better socket anyway. I found I didn't have to relieve the serpentine belt tension to remove the old alternator. After the top bolt and the lower front bolt were removed from the old alternator, the old alternator could rotate clockwise. This relieved the serpentine belt tension so much it just fell off the alternator pulley. I took my junk yard alternator to an Advance Auto Parts store, where they tested it for free to confirm it was functioning OK. The junk yard has a 30-day free replacement policy -- no refunds but you can exchange what you salvaged for another you salvage. F150s are one of the most popular vehicles, and most junk yards have quite a few to choose from. I found about 80% of the junked F150s already had their alternators scavenged by previous customers. I was told by a mechanic that Lincoln Continentals and Ford Crown Victorias also have the same model alternators installed. One odd thing was that the bolts on the Explorer were 13mm hex heads while the bolts on the F150 were 15 mm hex heads. The alternators were otherwise exactly alike.

Very informative video Dan. I did this to my 2003 F-150 and it worked out perfectly. Thank you for helping me. I'm a musician and know nothing about truck mechanics. You made me very happy.

Great video, used it to swap out the alternator on my 4.2L 2006. The 2006 has an additional mounting nut for the megafuse on the alternator (I assume that's what it is) and mine has AC lines in the way that were not present in this video. I did not disconnect the cooling line and was able to easily wiggle the old alternator out without removing tubes/hoses for any other systems.

Could you please post the part number and also what amp alternator do you have? I've got a 1998 4.2L with ac and 130k now needing new brushes in the voltage regulator. It's getting hard to find parts for this oldie, but I've owned it since new and it's in great shape. Also could use a reference to new serpentine belt. Ford quit making them too. Thanks

You sound like a guy who knows a thing or two. Why did you decide to install the “new” alternator with lock tight thread lock if the OEM alternator didn’t have any on the bolts? The video was great! Job 👍 well done. Keep up the great videos

It's just precaution. Probably not really necessary but it doesn't hurt.

A 1/2inch standard is close enough to a 13MM that you can use them interchangeably. I've only had one instance in which this would not work.

Fucking excellent! Mine just shit the bed and your video was straight to the point. My only two concerns, did you unhook the battery and I'm mildly concerned about finding the bolt to loosen and tighten the belt. Other then that, I'm gonna give it a whirl

Just a tidbit of advice for anyone replacing or rebuilding your alternator.. When installing it back into the vehicle:: "DO NOT PUT LOCTITE ON THE MAIN MOUNTING BOLTS"... The next time you have to remove the alternator you will snap the bolts. They can be tightened without fear of them ever coming loose without the need of loctite... If you've ever snapped bolts off inside an alternators mounting holes you know it's a miserable job to get them out... Just saying.
@XRDanL6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for you opinion. I've never had a bolt snap off because of Blue Loctite. I have had rusted bolts snap before. That's why I use it. "The Loctite Blue 242 Thread Locker is designed to lock and seal threaded fasteners to prevent loosening from vibration. It Prevents Leaks and the Rusting of Threads. It eliminates the need to stock expensive lock nuts and lock washers"
