I used plywood. You can use any stick you can lay your hands on.

No, You can't do with out it! That's the strength of the fan.

It's the gum stay that'll make it stand, make sure to add it.

I did add an interfacing. I don't know if the interfacing was too heavy or if I didn't sew it properly. The fabric itself is stiff...but when using the fan it shakes.

@@fellitagarraway9877 Interfacing comes in different weights. You need a heavyweight interfacing, one that will yield a stiff fabric when bonded. You can even use Fabric Fuse (by Pellon)---the weight used for handbags and window shades.
