Encoder pin Arduino pin
Phase A ------- 0
Phase B ------- 1
Phase Z ------- 6
5V ------- 5v
GND ------- GND
Careful,Every encoder has different wire color codes...dont forget to read the datasheet!!

TO THOSE WHO USE OMRON ENCODER THIS IS HOW I GOT MINE WORKING!!! ARDUINO - RESISTOR - ENCODER 5V - NONE - Brown and Shield wire (5v and GND) GND - NONE - Blue wire(0v/Common) 0 - 4.7k resistor to 5v - Black wire(A phase) 1 - 4.7k resistor to 5v - White wire(B phase) 6 - 4.7k resistor to GND - Orange wire(Z phase) I literally have no idea why this works, but after hooking it up it works for me like a charm. Also, when using this config, WheelConfig initially will show firmware 0.0, disconnect Z phase's resistor until it becomes the correct one. Let me know if this helped!

May not be exactly complitly right with it too. This config with power from Arduino with 5volts do not work with resistors too. YOU SHOULD put 12 Volt (or up to 24v as it is there working power also) power supply to encoder and connet common with arduino. Then any 1.2-4.7.kohm resistor will work for A&B. www.xsimulator.net/community/attachments/ebx_-1415662429-gif.45026/

I connect my arduino pro micro to my pc with firmware installed and everything works but wheelconfig doesnt register the movement of my 600ppr encoder. I wired everything exactly like in the video. Sometimes it says calibration error

With ordinary A B encoders that will work only with STAND ALONE 12-24 power to encoder, and 1.2-4.7Kohm resistors to A B channel from 12v also. Proved. Don't forget to connect arduino "-" with "-" of the 12 v power supply. (DON'T CONNECT 12 V + TO ARDUINO +5v, that's if smth) ibb.co/mdFmDA

@@internetdinosaur64yearsago not in Leonardo only to encoder power. And all the same externall 12 or whatever to a b channels through resistors. Connect minus from external power with leonardo board only too.

The printer encoder is cheapest solution but its not resistant than the omron one but i think the solution is making the rotary encoder case with sensor inside like the omron Edit: i havent try but i will try it when im become the college student

Awesome project! Is the arduino leonardo fast enough to read encoder interrupts without loss of centering? With your printer encoder (about 2000 - 2500 ppr), did you notice any loss of center? I'm thinking of using a dead G27, it uses 60ppr encoder, but there is a reduction box that increases to around 1000ppr.

Hi. I have question. Is there any possibility to set much more rotation to encoder? Because I have engine with encoder. The problem is, the engine (so is encoder) has 378:1 gear ratio.

You have to do ztrick first ... connect pin6 to gnd, for omron you have to install resistance

Hello, I have a few problems. I connected my encoder (cheap chinese, AB) like you in the video, but the firmware version changes just some times. After the version is 0.16, I connected the Z axis with your trick, but the little triangle isn't moving when I rotate the shaft. The number of the X axis also don't change (around 32000). Do you know what I'm doing wrong?

Which engine is much stronger, 775 or hitachi? Is it possible to insert an encoder disc into the back of the 775? Since it is the fastest axis, to have better encoder precision.

Go to the wheelconfig, advanced settings, and set the Y Axis A0, the Z Axis as A1, Rx as A2.

Just for an inquiry.. when you are using the cheap chinese encoder, if you set the turning angle to 270 degrees when calibrating the steering wheel will it stop on 270?? or can I still turn the wheel but the turning angle does go beyond the 270??

a few questions 1. can I use a geared or servo motor 2. is there a limit on torque (im buying a motor with 30nm of torque) 3. is a motor needed 4. how to connect motor to encoder (if a motor is even needed) 5. 1.yes u can use geared motor,except worm geared type.. 2. U need special driver,to handle big torque motor,with xurrent control features 3.yes if u want forcefeedback 4. choose correct motor for suit moto driver specs...if use AC motor choose driver that support AC too..the rules is same if use DC motor

im a little stuck i have the CWZ6C encoder but reading through the comments im not sure if i should add the 4.7k resistors to: A=5v 3.7k resistor B=5v 3.7k resistor z=5v 3.7k resistor Or do i just add the 5v to Z with no resistor or no 5v at all

i am using a encoder and sensor from canon printer, its not same as in your video but i connected it the same way and the problem is that it doesnt detect any motion even while using your trick. it has 5 wire output and i'm using 4 of them as phase A,B,+ve,-ve by your diagram

i tested with multimeter, its showing a flow of current on one side of polarity and after changing polarity it shows a tiny bit of it...

Hello i tried using printer encoder but the emc lite program gives me 0 and -1 and the wheelconfig just changes a little from 32260 to 32240 or something im guessing it just moves 1 step can anybody help

Hi there! I am going to be using a leonardo in a Logitech MOMO racing wheel. The wheel itself has a PCB that reads a white line on the shaft so it knows when the wheel is centered. How do I go about connecting this to the Arduino board? Do I hook it up to encoder Z pin? If not, how would the wheel calibrate itself? I'm using a motor with a built in encoder /the factory momo one/.

+iMario Hi this is for diy only....just take encoder wire and motor.then buy driver motor..but your pcb will not use anymore...use encoder with z index if u want self calibrate

Hello, I finally got a Rotary Encoder 600P / R 5-24V (before I used to use a printer encoder), but when I connect to the arduino the wheel does not move, I measured the voltage that comes out of the phases with a multimeter, and does not leave 5v, nor close to it, is that the problem? do you know how many volts does the TX and RX arduino pins support? Thanks bro

Yes any optical encoder or motor with an optical encoder. You can alternative use a 10kilo ohm potentiometer with gears if you don't have an optical encoder.

in theory yes...but in this vid i try with only 240ppr...still works good and smooth,the encoder math and calc...done by firmware...

What about connecting the A,B encoder? Requires the corrected schematics except the switch trick? Because i'm tryin it but the WheelConfig software tells ''Wheel error'' or ''Calibration error'' Regards

gan udah pake omron cwz6c udah di wiring tapi aneh. kalo input phase ditaro sebelum resistor di apps tulisannya ready dan kalo ditaro sesudah resistor malah calibration error. tapi dua duanya tetep gak respon gerakan.. gimana ya ??? trus pas z phase nya saya copot dan diganti pakai switch malah ngedetect gerakan.. duh bingung.... oya btw itu wiring schematics nya agak ambigu... itu yang merah crossing ke kabel input nya emang nyambung atau tiap input resistornya sendiri sendiri...? oiya saya pake resistor 1k

have an issue. I grab my encoder from my printer and it is a bit different(it's HP) It has flat cable, importantly I don't know where is gnd a,b and 5V I couldn't find any schematics or pinout of it. You should follow the tracks on the board, to find the connections to the led, apply 5 volts and when the led turns on...You Will know the polarity.... the other two pins Will be signal

Hi guys, I have a steering wheel with arduino leonardo, everything is ok but I have a little trouble with the wheelconfig software, sometimes it can not status ready, instead of status homing, after a while it will be calibrate error When I tested it on the board, it was still ready and I was able to play FFB until recently. It was not ready for homework, I did not know how to handle this, hope you can help. Thank you very much

Hello~ i have question.. i have Arduino Leonardo, Bts 7960 and E6B2-CWZ6C 1000ppr Encoder.. As shown in the video, I connected the three products and the motor respectively. The wheel works. But When the motor connects the power to the motor board, the motor continues to run in one direction without stopping. By turning the wheel left or right, only the direction of the motor rotation changes, but it turns without stopping. I really don't know. Ask for advice. If anyone knows.. please :)

Sorry,for usb hid project the mcu must support native usb like atmega32u4(leonardo),but actually u can use uno for usb hid,but is not simple,u can try nicohood hoodloader project for uno

ya id just grab a 32u4 pro micro.. and a ads1115 . then u can get the pro micro to run your pedals and handbrake at 14bits perfectly. ads1115 allows up to 16bit it says. but if run at 14 seems to be fine..

find your encoder output pin first see 0:25 ,but be careful if you wrong polarity in 5v and GND ,may damage your encoder
