We had a spot in our backyard that barely got sun and was just dead grass, weeds, mud and moss. For Father's Day I asked Katherine if I could do something with it.
I was inspired from our weekend in Suncadia and seeing the backyard living and lifestyle there. That video: • SUNCADIA TRIP - PERSIN...
For this DIY Weekend project I spent less than $1,000 on everything, including grill.
I used pea gravel as the ground cover. Pea Gravel is cheap and easy to work with. And we went with a stylish gas fire pit. It was similar to the one we had at Suncadia.
Gas firepit makes it easy to clean up, not being hated by your neighbors and you don't smell like smoke after.
The gas firepit www.target.com...
The grill www.target.com...
I got the stone from a stone and gravel dealer. You can get pea gravel by the bag at places like Home Depot or Lowes. But I used 2 cubic yards for this backyard project. That's a lot of stone.
It was easier to have the pea gravel delivered. The cost is about the same when you factor in delivery.
We spend a lot of time in backyard now, playing, eating, relaxing and working.

I wrote a detailed blog that shows step by step and what you need to do a backyard makeover like this using pea gravel. Check it out here: www.persingergroup.com/blog/backyard-makeover-pea-gravel/

Thank you for making this video, and also providing the step-by-step blog! Easy (relatively speaking), affordable, safe, natural, and looks good is exactly what we're looking for. Step #4 is my favorite (Enjoy a Beer). Thanks again.

I have a nice big yard with space on the side too. The side yard it's just sitting there looking boring..I want to use that space too..the side yard has a slope which iam thinking of removing or adding dirt to level. After that iam gonna lay down concrete to use that space too. However, now iam debating between gravel and concrete for the side yard space ( 15ft from house to fence and 60ft long.)...my only concern is gravel getting stuck under shoes and bringing it into the house...I have very nice plank vinyl flooring.. we won't be taking shoes off to go into house.

hi, looks great! we’re in the process of doing a pea gravel patio now and i’m not sure if i need to lay a base of crushed stone underneath. it looks like you just did the fabric and the gravel, correct? how has it held up?
@Persingergroup
@Persingergroup 4 жыл бұрын
We just did fabric and gravel. I'm not sure if I posted or linked to the fabric, but it's the heavy duty stuff. And I didn't dig deep either, so that could depend on if you need something else. It's held up good, a few new bags of pea gravel here and there. This home is rental now, and our tenants like the use of and that there is less yard to maintain. I'm planning on doing a smaller version of this at our new house.

A fire pit should be at minimum 10 feet away from a house and fence.

The blocks are just glued together. The “bench” part is just the wood sled through the blocks.

I'm also in the PNW - Portland suburb and we want to do something like this. My question: What is the best weed block/fabric for the incessant rain that you came across? Also, any issues or recs since you did it nearly 3 years ago?
@Persingergroup
@Persingergroup 4 жыл бұрын
cant remember the weed barrier, sorry. but it was from HD, let rain thru... I remember that. It needs some new pea gravel every year and resetting the pavers. I should have treated the lumber piece I used, but for the speed, ease, price I'm ok, doing those little projects to upkeep.

Hows this patio holding up after 3 years, thinking of doing the same thing.
@Persingergroup
@Persingergroup 4 жыл бұрын
Good. I should have stained and treated the 4 x 4 and could have done a more solid barrier, but I wanted ease and to keep the cost down.

Wifey wants to do this for a small area. So how do you like the gravel patio now after having it for some time ? Is the gravel moving ? can you walk on it barefoot or does it hurt to walk on it ? do it again or a different method ? Thanks. Looks good
@Persingergroup
@Persingergroup 5 жыл бұрын
I'd do it again. Because of expense and ease. Can walk it on barefoot, it's not like gravel gravel. It's rounded. It does move around. Gets kicked on to patio, etc.

How does the pea gravel hold up to foot traffic? We are in the middle of the same type of project and I am worried about it spreading out and getting down to the barrier. How deep did you do the gravel? Thanks!
@Persingergroup
@Persingergroup 7 жыл бұрын
Casey Hoorelbeke it's holding up really well. Maybe I'll do an update on a future vlog. We have some areas with an inch, some with 3 inches. I'd recommend an inch minimum - shoot for 2 inches.

PersingerGroup thanks for the reply. How does it worm with feet of chairs? Do you ever see the weed fabric or does it not displace bad?
@Persingergroup
@Persingergroup 7 жыл бұрын
It gives, not as much as sand, but it's really good. We have our table and chairs out there and eat a few meals per week on it and never have to worry about it being balanced. The weed fabric does show a bit sometimes when my daughter starts kicking or digging in an area where there is less gravel. It sounds like the thing you have to worry about is edging. If you notice in the video I have patio bricks edging one side, no dig edging the other sides and then my 4x4. As long you have edging the pea gravel isn't going anywhere, spreading out.

I have a question. I really like pea gravel idea. I am thinking about doing it soon. The question is about the drain. I am sure pea gravel 2inch won’t form puddle or anything like that but what did you do with the drain basin(one with green circular cover area)? Looks like you put shade paper over it and put gravel on it. Did you leave the cover on and do that? And put extra depth of gravel on it? My future home has two of those in middle of lawn and slope is slightly toward the middle of backyard(it can be flat if use extra gravel in those area. Let me know what you did..thank you
@Persingergroup
@Persingergroup 5 жыл бұрын
Wankyu Jonathan Choi just covered it with the pea gravel. And the fire pit is basically over top of it. The pea gravel allows the water to get through pretty easily. Never have had a problem with drainage.

Personally I would of used larger shingle . If only because you have youngsters and they always seem to kick it around everywhere when it's small stuff . Also it gets into soles of shoes and walks indoors a lot ! Otherwise great job !!
