DIY Backyard Putting Green

8 жыл бұрынMade my own backyard putting green using Tifgreen bermuda sod. Rototilled St. Augustine grass. raked, and sifted entire area to remove any rocks, old roots, etc. Made sod roller to smooth out putting surface. Installed two 6"aluminum cups and stitched flags and made flag sticks.

Two summers in a row my uncle made a green exactly like this that our whole family would play on. He bought a mower and roller just like that. My uncle passed away about two years after that last summer at 28. This brought back some of the best memories of my life so thank you.

Badly needs top dressing and rolling with sand! Looks like a 2 on the stimp. Usga turf mix is 60% sand mix....

ALS News Now did you see the U.S. open at Chambers bay and well the last few U.S. opens for that matter? The greens were terrible at Chambers bay and either the 2017 or 2018 the greens got so fast they were almost unplayable. The USGA is a joke.

yes i bought a greens mower. its the Mclane 10 blade 17" greens mower. the price was $525.00...If you have any other questions just let me know..Take care

Yeah its alot of work..i have to cut at least every other day..keep track of weather, water properly, insecticides, fertilizing schedule...on and on :)

it was fun while it lasted..I underestimated the time and commitment needed to keep up with this green..With everyday stuff we all have going on in our lives i couldnt cut this grass every day or every other day, after 2 yrs of caring for the green i decided to stop

Nice job! how consistently well does it roll on that Tifgreen? I was concerned that Tifgreen and Tifway dont stand up tall enough to putt on as that is the bermuda i have on my entire lawn so i used penncross bentgrass bermuda seeds to build a similar sized putting green as yours but it has taken a helluva lot more time, cost, and work than sod.

Now all you have to do is find a course with rectangular greens and you'll be unbeatable. BTW what happened between rototilling and adding top soil.

@@phillipoliverholtz9226 dont need drainage. If you put a wetting agent or even just put some baby shampoo into a hose end sprayer and sprayed the green, water would be absorbed a lot quicker.

All you had to rent was a sod cutter. Lots of extra work with that tiller.

Need to top dress with sand to get it to smooth out. You can roll it all you want and it'll never be as smooth as a green. Simple fix though, good work!!

@@7bikerboy7 can u cut it any lower? Also, i'd suggest treating it will some kind of wetting agent. You can even fill a hose end sprayer with baby shampoo and spray it on there. That'll keep any water from rolling right off

A couple questions. If you ran on this grass and made hard stops, would the sod rip out? How long does the sod last before it needs to be changed

no this is very tough bermuda.. im not sure how long it lasts..as long as you take care of it it should last as long as any other type of grass

Was looking at ideas to put in a putting green at my home and found your video. Impressed with the work . Question that came to mind was what kind of mower are you using to cut the grass short ? Most reel mowers cut 1 inch unless you pay out a grand for the "green reel mowers " . Any help would be appreciated . Again great video , thanks for taking the time to make it and share !

i just made one...pretty much a 2'x3' wooden frame, then i nailed wire mesh on one side

im assuming you used "bentgrass"? im in the process of making a putting green about 10X14 feet. ive moved about 15 wheelbarrow loads out, and im nowhere near done lol. considering ive never done grass on the level of putting greens, im curious... should you have used the roller before you laid the SOD? or do you want a loose top layer for the grass to nestle into?

not a machine but i have the spikes I strap on my boots, works good but just takes too much time. Ive also been thinking about wrapping spikes around the roller somehow, would save me a lot of time...

i didnt do anything but hope that it didnt die. i think it was about 1 week or 1 1/2 weeks before the first cut..If i could go back and to do it all over again i wouldve chosen creeping bentgrass

Whats the height youre cutting at? I just got a reel mower and i started out at 1/2 and want to move it to 1/4. Also how heavy is that roller?

i was cutting just under 1/4"..i gradually cut lower and lower..i was unhappy with this type of grass for putting and decided to stop..not sure what the weight is on the roller, its pretty heavy though

honestly i think they're all over priced...Its well built and should last many more years...If you see my other videos you can see that i like building things, so in the near future i plan on adding a cordless drill to the top of the mower to power the drive chain...will make it easier to cut..

Not undermining the effort you put into this. I think it looks fantastic. But I would've gone with a more rounded look. Like an actual putting green. I suppose it would've been a bit more challenging to do that, but still.

A more efficient way to sod is to have 1 person throwing 2 pieces on the ground while the other is on the ground sliding them in place

i made some spikes that wrap around the concrete roller. the height is at about 3/16

Ever heard of top dressing and asking someone to provide audio? Plus, if I went to the trouble....and I am...mine will have movement. Great job but ask for guidance. Plus....do you have enough sun light and a big fan to move air?

Great job with the green, great job with the video!Hate to tell you this, but that shade near your house is going to be a problem. Have you noticed the Tifgreen getting stringy and sparse in that area yet?

yes, it gets full sun by the screen from sunrise till noon...it does start to get thicker and fuller starting about 4' from the screen
