Discus are omnivorous fishes that require a varied diet that consist of both meat and veggies and is also high in protein. This is my first attempt at making discus food. The beef heart is high in protein and the veggies and mulitvitamins provide the different minerals that they need to live a healthy life. I used a steamer to cook the veggies because it helps hold the nutrients in better than boiling. If you cannot steam the veggies boiling will also work.

Powdered vitamins work as a binder with no need for gelatin. Ditch the ice cube trays... Put your mix in small zip lock freezer bags, flatten the bag out thin and then FREEZE, not refrigerate. Take bag out of freezer, break a piece off and feed.

I read in one of the breeders blog that he does not advice spinach. Since according to some studies it was preventing calcium intake in fish! So I use red lettuce and green peas. My discus goes nuts. I also use about 300 grams fresh garlic for about 3 kg meat.

the discus are great now. i will be posting a video with them tomorrow. and beefheart does not have oil, liver does, whatever oil it may have in the tank gets skimmed off the top by my overflow and also i do 2 50% water changes a week. and yes beefheart is great for discus because of its high protein content. any other questions......get back to me

Nice video. Try not using beef heart, but liver instead. Much better for your fish. Also any cold water fish ( for fat and vitimans). Egg yolk is a great binder. Oh yes Shrimp is great as well. I have Never used beef liver in over 38 years. Woody's Discus (FB ) See Marc Weiss video on U Tube

(i m from India, so getting beef heart in India is not legal.) Hoping for a reply from u, i really need to know about this. Thanks once again for a great video.

Love the video bro I live in the Bahamas so beef heart isnt common here can u recommend an alternative to beef heart and would u recommend this mixture for a motoro stingray
@jpollonais
@jpollonais 10 жыл бұрын
well any kind of heart will be fine (besides human heart). hearts are used because it is mostly red meat which is very nutritious and high in protein. i know of people who use turkey hearts and lamb hearts. stingrays and discus have very similar nutritional requirements so this recipe will work. stingrays are more carnivorous though so i would add more meat than veggies. hope this helps

what kind of meat are u using? i wanna make my own food for my goldfish
@jpollonais
@jpollonais 10 жыл бұрын
im using beefheart here. to the best of my knowledge i think goldfish are big veggie lovers so veggies like spinach, carrots and green peas will make a good meal for them. you should also add some meat like shrimp or beefheart to add some essential nutrients the meant may not have
@jpollonais
@jpollonais 10 жыл бұрын
OMKAR POKHARKAR that is true. i think as long as you dont over feed your goldfish the amount of waste they generate wont be too much to handle. live food would also be good if they are available to you. unfortunately it is not that available to me. and the amount of meat you give them to veggies should be at a ratio of 3 parts veggies to 1 part meat. so lidia i hope you are taking note of this and thank you OMKAR for your input.
@jpollonais
@jpollonais 10 жыл бұрын
OMKAR POKHARKAR wow really. that is impressive. what is the recipe you use because i dont get that kind of growth from my discus (and i would really love to) i feed them 3 times a day and do a 50%+ water changes twice a week (mondays and thursdays)

Justin, hear nah, I think research has said that Spinach does not aid the fishes digestive system as good as lettuce. They've even added Spirulina to the mix but this is not my point. Everybody has their own mix that works for their fish but i'm wondering if you have changed your recipe since this video as I am going to be making my own beef heart and just looking for the best recipe/advice before I start. Everybody thinks that their recipe is the best and really you can literally put anything in your mix that you think is good for the fishes health. On top of your recipe i've seen people adding Salmon, Cod, Snapper, you name it and they've added it. So ah was wondering if you had a lot of success with your mix as this is now 2015 and would appreciate it if you would reply when you get a chance or if your recipe has changed, do an update video. Fellow Trini. Later Breds. Hope to hear from you soon. Yuh tink Ace Hosein woulda recognize dah accent right away eh lol. Later. Oh yeah, ah subbed you ages ago because ah did like de recipe lol.

+Watch it well i would say that i have had success with this as i was able to grow the discus you see at the end of the video from about 2.5 inches to about the size of a digestive biscuit. Nowadays I dont feed this too much because the water changes i would need to keep the water clean would be a lot. The main ingredient in this food is meat after all so if you lapse on water changes the leftover rotting food will foul the water fast. I never let it get to that point but it was not easy keeping the water quality good enough to keep the fish healthy and growing. Lemme know if you have any other questions.

Yeah ah know what yuh saying, Thanks for replying so quickly. Under my tank I have a 40 gallon sump with everything yuh could think of. From natural to man made. Ah living in Scotland,(meaning yuh could literally just do a water change straight out of the tap and add some prime) and I feed my Discus real heavy. Normally the tank is heavily planted and ah lose about a gallon of water everyday through evaporation, which is replaced by an automatic top up system. Using a HMA RO filtration unit that takes out the chlorine, and all that processing chemicals, (well most of it lol,) and leaves all the minerals and stuff. No waste water. It takes about 2 weeks before my nitrates build up to about 40ppm, then I do a 50% water change. I'm wondering if it's because i'm also adding liquid ferts and root tabs that the plants are not absorbing most of the nitrates and excess nutrients in the water. Maybe I should just feed the plants the carbon and leave out the rest and let them help with the nutrients and the bacteria waste. What yuh think? I could be speaking rubbish yuh know lol. Later Breds and once again, thanks for the reply. Talk soon.
