Something you might consider making.... I have a pull-up tower and made a 4ft long belt squat bar, but...I made it 5ft 6in with the pivot 18inches from one end. If I flip it over so that the 18-inch side is on the pull-up side. It allows me to weight the 4ft lever and acts as an Assisted Pull-up see saw.

Looks great. I’ve had an idea for something like this for a while but never fleshed out enough to tackle it myself. Now with this video I don’t have to! I do wish there was a way to start from a standing position. But that’s not a big deal. A DIY leg press is coming I know. How about after that a DIY leg extension/hamstring curl rack attachment? I have seen a couple designs but nothing compelling. I like your approach to this stuff so I think that’d be interesting.

There is a way to start from a standing position! I only found out after posting this video. Check out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNOnZbCgrLrUgHk.html It's pretty clever and easy to pull off. I could definitely do a leg extension/curl attachment. I have added it to my to-do list (which is getting pretty long now) and start working on it.

I used this video to build my own belt squat platform a couple months ago. I made mine about a foot wider, otherwise I followed this design to a T. This thing is legit. For those of you who don't have all the tools that Kaizen has, you can get by with less at the sacrifice of some precision. I didn't have a drill press, a chopsaw, a table saw, or a router. I used a cordless drill, a circular saw, and a power sander. It's not as perfectly aligned as Kaizen's but it's still strong and it works well. Thanks for putting this together, Kaizen.

Nice, I like the video and how you solve the main issue. The only drawback, in my opinion, is that in the expensive commercial belt squat machine (like the cumbersome Rogue model), you can start the movement in an Upright position; in your solution, you start on your knee (when attaching the cable to the rack pulley) and thus don't look optimal in particular when you use heavy weight. Anyway, I love your solution. Greetings from Italy.

@@KaizenDIYGym I may be a bit crazy, but in my head I see a platform with a control system out by the weight bars on the trap bar which is attached to a platform which is held down by your own weight, but which may be too small to hold the platform steady. I had an operation for lumbar spinal stenosis about a year ago and I have trained my upper body and cycled and walked a lot after that, but I didn't think it gave much results, at least in the legs in relation to the upper body, so I bought myself a trap bar for to practice squats and deadlifts in the hope that it could help the legs. But there have been some problems with keeping the balance, so I came up with this idea. I have also thought of a trap bar with movable handles attached to a land mine where the barbell does not slip out of the attachment to the land mine and the trap bar. There is a lot of good equipment and machines for training squats and deadlifts, but here in Norway you have to be a millionaire to buy such things

In considering selling my Bells of Steel lever belt squat machine and instead buying their Lat Pull down rack attachment just so I can build this platform to go with it. It seems that having resistance pull you straight down as oppose to drag you forward slightly, as the lever one does, is more ideal. Is a pulley based system, such as this one, something that will last for some time? Are there any parts that will eventually wear out?

I've got an XMark dual stack functional trainer and I'm trying to figure out how to do belt squats hooked to both stacks. The stacks are 200 lbs each but it's 2:1 so one stack max is really only 100 lbs. The pulleys on the stacks are approx. 44" apart so I built a platform with a hole in the middle and two pulleys underneath and made a couple custom cables that hook to the factory cables and run through the side of the platform to the pulleys, It kind of works but still needs some tweaking. Building this now and realized.. your layout consists of 10 pieces.. you only used 8 when building the platform. Did you not have to use the 21 inch 2x4s??

if you are standing on it, isnt that enough weight to hold it down? I mean, you cant lift yourself up can you?

No, it moved around a lot without the weights. Felt unsafe using it that way. It is way more secure with the weights on it.

Yeah, it needs to be anchored down under heavy weights. I made an updated video showing how I connected it to a wall mounted pulley tower. In my opinion it’s the perfect diy belt squat set up.

The power rack version is half-assed. After seeing your clever lever arm build incorporating casters, I'm disappointed with this build. Design flaws: (1) vertically loaded plates gets old really quickly (bet you didn't use this long), (2) starting and ending squat from the bottom - that's very limiting on weight and will really suck once novelty wears off, (3) the design is limiting you to 1/3 squats (note the depth difference when you use functional trainer), (4) use band pegs instead of bolts and nuts to attach platform to rack, it's much quicker; this thing has to be set up every session and removed afterwards, so make it easier. The design of the platform internals is nice. But better to find a way to attach bottom pulley to rack. That allows for smaller platform that doesn't need to be secured to rack. Easier to do with 6 post rack, so pulleys can be left in place. Long setup time means lower likelihood of use.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to thoughtfully critique this video. First off, I'd like to point out that this is a hobby for me, I'm not getting paid, so I don't necessarily have time and resources of a Rogue product designer when building and testing out this equipment. Cut me a little slack. The platform needs to be either held down with weights or attached to a rack, otherwise it will move all over the place and is unsafe. Of the two options I show in the video, stacked weights and connected to my functional trainer is the way I prefer. Yes, I still use it this way every leg day. It’s really not bad at all. I haven’t figured out a good way to start from the standing position. That is a fair critique. I am using this as an accessory exercise after doing heavy squats with a bar, so I am more than happy to do more reps with less weight. So far, it's not a deal breaker for me. The rest of the stuff you mentioned is not really worth going into (see first point about how I don’t have unlimited time and resources to make perfect designs) and I am more than happy to see people modify my designs and make them better. My instagram page is full of that stuff. I am okay knowing that not everything I build is going to be perfect for everyone. My goal is to give people options for building equipment if they want to. I try to make tutorials in a way that is accessible and cost effective. If it doesn’t work for you, don’t make it.

@@KaizenDIYGym Sure, I get this is a hobby. And I appreciate what you're doing, which is why I'm subscribed and took the time to provide a long comment. If I thought this channel was garbage, I wouldn't bother. Also, my comments aren't just for you, but for the other DIY'ers who subscribe to this channel. Just providing ideas for specs that would make for a better mousetrap. Yes, your functional trainer version is much better b/c you get very good depth. The other version is practically worthless as it is b/c it's so shallow. To start the squat from the top, ditch the loading pin. Use a piece of spare upright (or some similar post-type piece), attach weight pegs to it. Attach a D-ring or loop at the top. So now you have a side loaded loading pin. Use a second cable secured to the rack to suspend that loading pin in the air, say 2 ft off the ground. Now load up the plates, and use good collars so plates don't slide off. Now stand on platform, squat down a little (will have to tune height of suspended loading pin to get this right, but you want to get it so you only have to squat down 6-12 inches), attach main cable to your belt. Stand up - with the correct cable lengths, standing up will transfer weight of loading pin to your legs. That means the second cable is now deloaded, so you can detach that (will have to secure it in such a way that you can reach it while on the platform). Perform reps - b/c the suspended loading pin has much more travel to the ground, you can go squat well below parallel if you choose. When done, stand up, attach the second cable, then squat down 6-12", which will deload your legs and transfer all the weight to the second cable. Unclip main cable from belt. Unload plates from loading pin. Hope that all makes sense. I haven't built this yet, so there may be fatal flaws I'm not seeing yet. Curious to see if you spot any issues with this design.

You're wasting a lot of time making this equipment as you could've used a dip belt with weights while standing on two platforms.
