DIY Blending Board for Under $100, Is it possible?

I want to try making a DIY blending board for under $100. Is it possible? Let's find out! In this video I will show you how I made a DIY blending board and then we will test it out, make a rolag and spin some fuzzy woolen yarn. It's woolen long draw time!

✨Any pet brush and stiff bristled 2" paint brush will work. Mine came from my local Dollar Store.

LOVE this! I just put mine together (had to get the cloth off eBay because the Woolery was back ordered) I went one step extra and added some non-skid shelf liner to the back, best decision ever, it stays put on my work table and I'm not fighting it.

Looks good. I hadn't heard that about bamboo boards. When I made mine, I used a bamboo cutting board when I made mine and didn't have any issues with the staples. My first few rolags were like yours. I've since learned that drafting helps. You should be able to get 4 to 6 rolags off your board if you draft it out while rolling onto your needle. That will make them less packed, nice and airy. Draft, roll, draft, roll, draft, roll, and then pull off. You kind of get into a grove after a while. I think you'll like it because you love playing with different fibers. It's so much fun mixing things up and seeing what you get when you spin it. Though to be honest, I have a few rolags I've made that are just so darn pretty I haven't spun them yet. I've got them in a bowl, kind of like a floral arrangement. They make me smile each time I look at them.

Thank you for sharing about the bamboo! I'm glad to know it worked! I'm starting to figure out how to not pack my rolags. That first one I did was less like a cannoli and more like a bratwurst! Haha! It definitely could have been 4 or 5! Your "flower" arrangement sounds lovely 😍

Great idea... thank you so much for this video. I've recently bought a new-to-me nano e-spinner and can't wait to get started... I was eyeing a blending board but they seem prohibitively expensive considering i've never done it before. Thus is something i'd definitely want to try. Thank you!

Thank you for your video. I made one of these blending boards for my wife for Christmas. The only problem I had was that the Woolery actually sent me a piece of “blending board pad that was not square and in order to make the teeth run straight up and down the pad had to run on a slight angle. It works okay but I hoped for a nicer look. But that’s not your fault. My wife loves it!

I did it! Cost me $50 and I absolutely love it! Went with a 90 this. I was surprised that pretty much anywhere that sells different carding brushes also just sell the fabric. I do some woodworking so I made a blending board and a hackle! Tip for people just using dowl rods (I mostly crochet so I don't have many knitting needles, certainly not the right size for the board). If you're using dowl rods sand them with a super fine sandpaper so they're VERY smooth! Having something to clamp the boards down with helps too!

huuuuuh, interesting. I tend to favor white fibers because I do a lot of dye making. That's part of the appeal of spinning that I can design my own colors. This actually reminded me of a couple of videos that Sally Pointer did trying to recreate a stoneage flax hackle just based on what an archeologist found. But she carved the wood herself, drilled holes in them and then packed and glued in blackthorn thorns to make a hackle. If you do decide to try it (and yay, if you do I want to see you try) make sure you don't use locust tree thorns because those are forked at a right angle. Great for a gorge hook for fishing (which is illegal in some states including mine, but the instructions are still out there on the internet) but not great for a hackle. And no, I did not break fishing regulations in my state.Besides the illegality of it, you can't put a fish back when you use one of these because their throat is thrashed and the nearest waterways are hella polluted. So I will never get the chance to try it. Instead of locust, try hawthorn. Sally pointer uses their thorns as straight pins.

Mine was 38 for the pad a few pennies for staples and an old wood seat from a dead walker. Works well.

That turned out great! Thanks for sharing your diy experience. I personally don't like spinning from rolags and I've seen Sadie's Spincraft videos where she dizzes off her blending board so I've been practicing that technique. Also, I bought a dog brush and use it to brush the fibers into the board to pack them in, I just turned it around so the handle is facing the top of the board and brush down. That might allow you to pack more fiber on. Have fun with your new blending board!

i came across a lovely, super-heavy hardwood cutting board on the clearance rack, and i purchased it for the express purpose of making a blending board. it has been sitting (un-used) in my kitchen for a few years now, waiting for me to get around to buying the carding cloth. this video may just prove to be the kick in the tuchus i've been waiting for.

I made my blending board! I did use a bamboo cutting board and had no issues with the staples and I even had enough room to staple all four sides. Now, I’m trying to convince myself to try it out! I don’t know why I’m nervous about it, but I feel like I don’t know enough to blend the different fibers together although a part of me is like ‘it’ll be fine, just do it!’ Lol

i love your minecraft house !! i believe it was you i picked up the tip of using something like a d4 or d8 to remember what row repeat youre on; have you considered doing anything ttrpg/gaming/generally pop culture themed for a project or do you just like to keep it wild and wacky with whatever vibe the fiber gives you ? I love that you were able to do this and show us. Could you glue the cloth to the board (around the edges, not all over the back)? I have made rolags just with the knitting needles, but this looks so much easier.

I think you could glue the cloth because it is a stiff canvas, but the staples will hold so much better than glue. I think the action of pulling things off the board could pull at the glue and cause it to peel off or bubble up. Also, if it is stapled, you can pop the cloth off when it wears out and replace it instead of having to use a whole other cutting board. I think the staples are worth it, but maybe someone has glued their and will leave a comment and then we will know for sure! 🐑

@@JillianEve You don’t want to glue it. The carding cloth has to have some give in order for the tines not to get damaged from drafting. Glue would take away that give making your tines less flexible.

To make the rolag looser and not so flubby, pull just one of the knitting needles - dowel rods out at a time instead of removing the rolag from both at the same time. Perfect if you want to spin DK weight.

I borrowed one from our club and I stretched the fibre when I pulled it off the board then wrapped it on the dowels and was able to make more than one rollags. Hope that makes sense. They didn’t look as tight as yours.

Hi! Loved the video. I was wondering is 72 TPI carding cloth or 108 TPI better to buy and which you bought. I am wanting to make a blending board but confused as to which cloth would be best. Thanks for all your encouragement!

I have the 72 TPI and it works great for a range of fibers. 108 is for really fine fibers only and will break up your locks more so there's less texture in it. I hope that helps! 💜

I purchased the items in your video to make my own DIY blending board. Seems like my carding cloth is a little bigger than yours. Would you recommend trimming it down or get a larger cutting board.

Great video Evie! ...as usual, of course ;-) I have a question about the blending cloth. What ppsi count would you recommend? or does it really even matter for the blending board? TIA

That's a wonderful question actually! The cloth I got was 72 TPI which is a good all purpose kind of TPI. It is perfect for blending most wool and you can blend a little extra to have a smoother prep or you can blend less to have a more textured prep. You can get finer TPIs (more teeth per inch) which is great for smoother prep and blending very fine fibers like merino, alpaca, and things with lower micron counts. You can get coarse cloth of 54 TPI which is much more open and has less tines per inch. That is great for very bulky and textured preps with things like Lincoln locks, mohair, and other fibers that you want to maintain some of their raw structure. I put a link to Paradise Fibers in the description of the video. They have carding cloth that you can get in different widths and custom lengths. They also offer a greater range of TIP options so it is pretty awesome for creating a very custom blending board!

Did you add staples to sides afterwards? I bought 12" x 18" because it was less than special ordering 12 x 12 but unsure if 18" would be too long. So it's still a UFO while I screw up some courage to just do it! (And make sure which way is up - in more ways than one!)

I haven't and it hasn't bothered me much. It does lift up a little so it wouldn't hurt to staple the sides.
