Its not often Craig turns his hand to a craft project, but today we have the first of two bottle cutting videos... In this video, we use a cheap £20 ($25) bottle cutter to get some amazing results!
We start with a very new bottle - its thin glass should be easy... we move on to progressively older and thicker bottles until we get to a 6mm - is this too much for our budget bottle cutter! Nope! Its so satisfying to see these damaged bottles take on new life - one bottle was so badly damaged that we thought it could not be saved - we love the idea of Wabi Sabi, the beauty in the broken and partial, and today is a great example of that... taking the broken, making it even more partial to reveal its new found beauty!
We show you how to grind and polish the sharp edges to a smooth finish so that these cuts can be used in various ways!
In Video #2, Craig is going to cut a Codd bottle - WOW its around 1cm thick! So we turn, once again, to the Dremel and a diamond cutting disk - we've jumped ahead and cut a few of these last week so that we can make them available in our ETSY shop - please do pop by to support the channel!! Thank you so much!
We hope you enjoyed today's video...

Thanks so much Leslye! The bottle cutter came with a separate little cutter like you say, but we used the hot and cold method. There are other methods , like burning a string on the bottle but we didn't like that option very much ;)

Just a suggestion use water sand paper to get it smooth and not the rotor
@scottishmudlarking
@scottishmudlarking 2 жыл бұрын
Its good advice! Generally I'd only use the rotary tool larger sharp edges. But it comes with a risk of chipping the bottle... I use the wet dry paper here, to finish and polish the edges. Thank you so much, best wishes, Craig & Nicole xo

Neat. I didn't realize how easy it is to cut a top off, assuming you have the bottle cutting jig. I bet it took you a while to sand down the edges, though! But what a great way to salvage a broken bottle.I am amazed at how thick the old ones are compared to modern. Thanks for sharing.
@scottishmudlarking
@scottishmudlarking 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I thought it would take more time to get the knack of it - I have done a little stained glass work in the past, but nothing quite like this! Yes!! The diamond grinder just takes the very rough edges down, then the sanding! Depends on the bottle, but can be over an hour! We agree though - the results are worth it, especially when we have a great embossed design on a cracked bottle! It is amazing to see how thin the new bottles are - the thickest yet is the Codd - its around 1cm, sometimes more! Thank you for watching! :D Best wishes, Craig & Nicole xo

Thankyou for this video. Watching you work relaxes me and i can see you fired up with this new craft. How long did it take you to finally get the smooth finish that you want? I have spent many hours diving the St. Lawrence River in Ontario between Cornwall and Brockville and have retrieved many old bottles dating from the 1850’s to the 1950’s. Most of these bottles are made of thick glass compared to today’s average wine bottle. Few in my collection are without flaws. I am thinking that once I acquire a bit of skill, I might dare to make vases or beakers from the ones with heavy chipping around the top. With practice and a slow, steady hand, I might be able to give these old treasures a new life. Would be neat! 🇨🇦

Dude for thicker older bottles go around 10 times with the diamond cutter and then instead of pouring hot and cold water.....SUBMERGE the bottle right side up into "ice" cold water and the hot water up to the cutting line and you will have a perfect cut every time. Now you owe me a bottle 😊
