We're building infrastructure to accomodate future growth such as barns, duck house, 7 coop chicken house, water hydrants, planting an orchard, building a garden etc. Chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, barn cats and two old english sheepdogs make up our team here at the farm. Please follow along on our journey of transforming this place into something special.

Screw top lid much preferred. Cold fingers make it tough to open peel off lid.

I've had one for 3 years and this works perfectly!! No waste! I use half the feed from before for the same number of chickens.

Note to people who keep roosters: some roosters have such big combs they can’t get their heads far enough into the tubes to get to the food.

Manufactured ones for $9 don't (usually)have any protection from rain and you end up with food everywhere. This is meant to protect against both issues, I think.

I’ve read that running the hole saw in reverse makes cleaner cuts in plastic. I haven’t tried it but give it a shot.

It does prevent the hole bit from getting stuck and wrenching your wrist.

Find a way to suspend feeder at night to prevent rodents from feasting...

Suspending feeders makes life easier! Rodents can jump so put it up high enough that they can't get to it.

Instead of cutting the hub off that elbow just buy a 3" street elbow.

Go with "work smarter, not harder" and use a 90° street elbow instead of the elbow you used.

There's tons of cool ideas for dry feed but I ferment and have been trying to come up w something hanging for wet feed.

Bucket with lots of small holes drilled in the bottom. Like a sieve. Drop it into another bucket of water and then drain it daily.

Good idea. Use Harbor Freight oscillating multitool to cut PVC: fast and non-clogging. Cut door in top and use hinges for door to refill container with cracked corn.

Never put feed all day !! Chickens need just 2 times in the day. And all day for search and pick around. That is free food for rats.

Can use idea to make bird feeder, also. Cracked corn is cheapest feed. 50 lb bag about $15 at Tractor Supply.

I went to Home Depot and the worker told me 3/4 inch was to small for a chicken. I had to get 1 inch 90* angle in black. No white in my Home Depot. I sure wish you had a materials list. I could’ve show me the worker of what I needed.. Fingers crossed mine works😀

How the chickens get the food? Did you try to put your hand to the hole and reach the food?

my hand is far bigger than a chooks head, the chickens get the food just fine. The bucket is empty after a few weeks. You can use bigger pvc elbows too though.

No not really, the roosters heads barely fit… but you could use a larger pvc elbow too. In a few weeks the buckets empty so I know they eating.

Actually that lid is called a gamma lid and I bought it separate from the bucket at our local feed store

Help. How does the feed make its way back up the elbow? He turned the open end down towards the bottom of the bucket.

I left two fingers width gap at the bottom so the feed goes right to the bottom of the bucket. Chicken puts head down in there and gets food. Stops them from making a mess too.

Yes They are facing down inside the bucket, but they’re not touching the bottom of the bucket…leave a finger or two of space.

This style won’t hold water really, I haven’t built anything for water yet as I still use bought poultry drinkers. I’m sure you could google it and you’ll get a thousand videos though. 😊

Yes, I have a video on building a similar feeder using a huge trash can, it holds 4 bags of feed. Ducks just need bigger pvc elbows.

Depends on the size of your bucket, I used a 5 gallon bucket so it holds enough feed for several weeks for 18 birds.

I don't get it. At the end of the video the bucket just has a few grains of feed in the tube. The bucket appears empty. It's stupid

It’s not stupid at all my friend. The bucket is full, as chickens stick their head in there and eats the feed goes down by gravity. They can’t scratch it out and waste it and it gold 5 gal of feed.

Oh the feed just goes down by gravity as the chickens eat from the holes. It’s helps prevent them from scratching it all out and hold weeks worth of feed. 😃
