View Description for more details. Carbon fiber bike frame repair for around $5. THUMBS UP if this was helpful in any small way: ) This video shows how I repaired the broken water bottle holder on my Specialized S-Works Tarmac carbon frame. Total work time involved? Around 1 hour. Most of the time will be spent sanding. I bought a kit on ebay for $30 for a previous repair several months ago. There was plenty of carbon and epoxy remaining so I was able to do this repair for only a few dollars in supplies.
My carbon repair video: goo.gl/MPXUuI
The kit I bought from ebay: goo.gl/eQyprr
OR Search on ebay for keywords like this "carbon fiber cloth kit"
goo.gl/F50liY
In many cases, a broken carbon frame is repairable. My cracked carbon road bike frame had a soft spot in the top tube that flexed when pressed. Clearly it had been dinged by a previous owner. It seemed like a perfect candidate to undergo a do it yourself carbon frame repair.
I bought a carbon fiber repair kit on ebay that consisted of a roll of carbon fiber cloth, epoxy, hardener, and instructions. The kit was $30 with free shipping. There are many such kits available, so just search for one.
Some carbon repair shops specialize in repairing and refinishing carbon frames. But based on the pricing I’ve seen, a professional repair on my cracked Specialized S-Works frame would cost over $400. That’s too much for me. Plus, I wanted to see how easy it would be to complete a DIY repair.
Some pro shops claim that nearly every carbon fiber frame can be repaired no matter how severe the damage. Even if the tubes are broken. And that repairs are stronger than the original bike, with no measurable additional weight, and don’t alter the bike’s ride. My frame was cracked, which is not all that severe, so I can’t say from personal experience. If I have any cracked or broken frames in the future, I will definitely be performing the repair myself. Overall I thought it was very quick and easy. The most time consuming part was sanding down the new epoxy.
It’s possible to repair:
Cracked Tubes
Separated/Missing Tubes
Tube Replacement
Dropout Replacement
Car and roof rack accidents
Water bottle mount add-on
Handlebars
Seat posts
Carbon rims
Seat masts / topper
This video was about a carbon fiber layup repair, not paint. I did not paint the repair. My understanding is that a raw finish is just as durable as a painted repair, and won’t scratch and chip like paint would. Raw finishes require no maintenance.

Thanks for posting the video! Got me trying to fix an old alu frame with a cracked chainstay that was weakened from a few chainsuck events and years of pedaling. A few comments based on my noob experience. 1. The frame in question suffered a hole from the chain impacts. I filled that with "ding stick" marine putty and sanded it down to provide a flat surface for the carbon cloth to rest on 2. The repair kit you mention has four times or more the material needed for a one time repair, so: 2. For practice, I got a short PVC pipe the diameter of the chainstay and did a couple of trial runs before working on the actual subject matter. These pipes are sold at the hardware store for a couple of bucks each and by chance come in diameters similar to the various frame tubes found on a bike 3. I decided to wrap several layers around the chainstay. I ended up applying three to five layers three times, for extra strength. Each time, I glued a thin starter strip of cloth to the chainstay, to act as an anchor to allow me to tighten the cloth down while wrapping it around the chainstay tube. I used contact cement for anchoring, which does not set on the cloth but easily bonds strong enough to keep the cloth in place 4. I used a smaller brush - I believe in the video you end up applying considerably more epoxy than needed 5. Glad I did the trial runs on the PVC pipe - as charming as it is, I found the parchment paper with masking tape method ineffective. When unwrapped, the surface looked crumbled just like shown in the video. Instead, I settled on applying two layers of electric tape. First layer basically in place of the parchment paper to cover the messy epoxy, the second to tighten things down. Electric tape is flexible and strong and comes off the cured epoxy clean an easy. As an extra, it works much better wrapping in tight spaces and small diameters if needed 6. The above netted a clean uniform finish with the classic carbon weave pattern visible on the surface. No sanding needed. Hope this helps!

well, after watching this video i did indeed try this for myself, but it cost me 25 pound for the kit (available from a well known auction site), it is not quite as easy as it looks but it really did the job very well, consider that priming and painting and clear coating and wet sanding and then clear coating again took almost 20 hours for the whole bike frame, the carbon fixing was solved in about 2 hours including the sanding of the excess epoxy and carbon, job well done. I used a double full wrap of carbon at opposite directions and baking paper to protect the epoxy and taped over with electrical tape to create the tightness needed, my old TREK 5200 UPS frame is back in business. For all of those peoples saying you need to be an engineer, i am and basic understanding of materials is required and safety gear is needed because the fumes are very bad, much worse than fiber glassing

Fantastic tutorial. I've carried out several similar projects, but one thing I'd like to correct about your tutorial is the fact that the repair should surround the damaged tube, to reinforce it as opposed ti just putting the carbon fiber on the crack itself.

You probably put down more carbon than the bike had in the first place! Try 2 layers with the underlying layer cut atleast 10mm smaller to give an over lap which will give a better bond too. Also, please tape up the edges of your repair area! It just makes it so much neater😄 Try using cling film if you don't want to buy peel ply. As you wrap around the wet carbon, pull the cling film tight to help bonding and squeeze out some of the air. Also whilst we're talking about air; if you whip up your resin like that when you're mixing it, you'll get air bubbles in the resin, causing lots of small voids when it goes hard and therefore really weakens your repair. Lots of other tricks of the trade and following the other comments advice needed to make a better repair! But good effort for giving it a go. It will still more or less work the way you did it!

Now I will try and be as nice as possible . You cocked up . There lots of holes in that finish which means you didn't compress the material enough . You need to tightly wrap the material completely and to help the bond strength (and speed) put near a heater . The other problem is you put too much resin on the carbon .Use a little less . Lastly you included the stitched part of the material . That is there to stop the material from fraying and coming apart .

PROPER WAY: prep/sand your frame area, epoxy/lay first layer. let cure/dry 24hours. 2: sand/reprep area. lay epoxy and second patch. cure 24hours. 3: sand/prep area. paint epoxy on, lay third patch, allow 24hour cure. let whole mess cure afew more days then pretty it up. TIPS: DO NOT FAST STIR EPOXY, this creates air bubbles, which creates weak spots. stir epoxy slowly/thoughly.

And then I took out a seatpost out of my new Fuji SLM 2.1 where I never used a bottle holder, and the placeholders for the bottle bolts underneath the seatpost were literally hammered in! You can see huge slices of carbon coming off where they hammered them in! Could you tell me if this kind of damage compromises a carbon frame reliability?

al karg I've built up 5 or 6 bikes from the ground up, but would not call myself an expert. That's part of the reason I make these videos -- to show that you don't have to be an expert to work on your bike! This particular bike started as a bare frame that had two cracks in it. I found it on ebay for around $250, which I thought was a great price for a S-Works Tarmac (even with the crack). It has worked out very well as I have learned to love this frrame. The fit of the bike is excellent for me and it's reasonably light considering it's 9 years old. Cheers.

Those things were not necessary in this case since it was a rather basic, minor repair. Sean Klimczak Yes, it's worth a try. I tried paint remover on a different frame and it didn't work very well. In my opinion, I would have undermined the hole a bit and bought a rubber that mixes that they say are strong as steel and that's it, the frame in that area was not broken.

Enjoyed the vid. But like others have said, i think you went overboard. You could have fixed the rivet nut without the patch. If its a crack in the frame i could see this being a possible solution. But to be honest, i dont think id risk my life on a shotty crack patch.

The carbon fiber reacted with the less noble metal aluminum. Basically galvanic corrosion. Use only the most noble metals with carbon fiber. Aluminum should be avoided. If you must use aluminum on carbon fiber then electrically isolate the carbon from any less noble metals with a nylon dielectric material or "isolator" salt from your sweat will also degrade the carbon fiber over time unless the carbon fiber is coated properly with a 2 part urathane or 2 part polyurathane. good luck.

Dude, I saw your FB post about your broken tube. You wouldn't believe the number of 'Nervous Nancys' who are too afraid to attempt their own repair. But if the decision is between 1) trashing the frame, 2) paying $500 for someone else to repair it, or 3) trying it yourself, why not try it? If your repair doesn't feel strong enough, you can always take it to a pro. : ) Good luck, John.

Brahdda, I appreciate you taking the time, but IMHO this is a terrible way to do this repair. First off, way too much surface area affected, secondly, carbon fiber patch job looks shoddy as hell. Thirdly, ivalue of the bike was just destroyed to fix a simple water bottle holder. My point is that I'd NOT recommend this method for future viewers....might be good for more pertinent structural issues though, especially if taking better care to get the fiber patch looking decent.

I've got a similar issue on my carbon frame and to me this way of doing it seems like overkill (and it makes the frame pretty worthless when i sell it on). I'm tempted to just epoxy a pre-crushed rivnut into the hole left by the old rivnut, unless anyone has a better suggestion..
@fredflintstone2077
@fredflintstone2077 6 жыл бұрын
I had a similar problem. I just mixed up some resin, bunged up the hole, made a little Plasticine dam just in case I poured to much resin, then poured the resin around and let it seep into the affected areas. I removed the Plasticine, removed excess resin and wrapped it with pvc tape. Once it had cured I gently smoothed it over, masked the decals and spray painted the area. I then lacquered it and fitted a new riv nut. You cannot even tell it has been repaired.

how to repair a small scratch on a carbon fiber frame: fill it completely with molten titanium in a vacuum chamber. let it cool make a mold of the frame that is three inches thicker than the original. insert the frame. Put it in a vacuum chamber. pour in molten titanium to fill the mold. let it cool. perfect. Your frame is now no longer strength-compromised.

I think was better, (as for all resin works) to do the procedure layer by layer, meaning .... you do the first layer, you let it dry, grid the area, put the second layer etc ..... I think this is the right way not to scrap the fabrics all together, creating a "thinner" - "weak" carbon layer ............. also, I think for a small damage like this you need to fix a smaller area ..... sorry for the criticism .... is only my opinion.......

Please wrap your parchment paper with electrical tape for some compression to smooth out the look and to show people how to get a bit more strength for those repairs that do need more strength, if they choose. The epoxy needs to make continuous contact, but the more you can squeeze it, out of the voids, the stronger the situation will be when cured in 3 days. Nice work though!
