Today I'll show you the best way to change the oil in your 1st generation Honda CB750K.
This process is the same for all 1969-1978 SOHC CB750's.

I was listening to you talk at the beginning of the video and thought “this guy sounds like he’s from NS”. Then I saw your license plate. Although I now live in Southern Arizona, I’m from “The Valley” and I have family there. I have acquired a 1976 CB750F Super Sport. It needs a lot of TLC. Really like the video.

Just bought this same year/model off of the ole interwebs and trailered it home...pretty good condition for a 50 year old bike, but apparently it doesn't run (haven't even tried starting it yet). Hopefully it's just dirty carbs or something simple, but I am excited to hear it fire up for the first time. These old Hondas are so cool!

Not a lot of cb750 k4 videos out there so I thank you very much for all these. I bought one as my first bike about a year ago and it needs a lot of love. Your content is very informative. Currently going to school at MMI (Motorcycle Mechanics Institute) here in Arizona. Your videos, along with my education, I should be able to nurse this baby back to life! Keep them coming!

For those not aware, this is an earlier model with the dry sump. Later models had the wet sump and the oil was drained from the block, not the external oil reservoir.

At least you know the piston rings are wearing out at the same rate! I've used RESTORE's engine oil additive to return the cylinder pressure back to original values for both my cars (both over 220k miles). It's such a great product for older engines without actually replacing the hardware. before they ran super rough, and now it's very smooth and is even quieter in the valves and cams.

I love watching these. Nice and helpful to learn from someone else. ...mine is a 73. Doing a restoration on it, too. Incidentally, "mils" are not "millimeters" they are thousandths of an inch! There is an oil additive product called "restore" ...some guys on here reviewed it and said it improved their compression. Might reclaim that last psi with it. The other possibility is your compression really is perfect, and your compression gauge is off by that amount... I wouldn't normally think that, except that each cylinder's PSI is -identical- to the other... if they are going to fail some I'd expect a bit of variation between them... if there is none, I tend to think maybe another factor caused the reading to be low... in this case: the gauge, itself, is the common element between each reading.

Once again, You've done an amazing job with this video. Concise, well edited, you run through ALL the steps and name all the parts and brands necessary. My oil light kept flickering with abiut 5 second intervals and last year when I bought my 75' cb750 SS I didn't change the oil and have no idea as to the condition of the filter. You've shown me (and others) exactly how to do that. NOW if I can only remember to put the drain plug back in before pouring the new oil back in!

I do my compression test cold, no burns, try it on #1 cyl. when cold. You can check the compression every 8,000 to 16,000 miles or so. It's way easier than physically checking the valve clearance on each valve. When you see the pressure drop, then check the valves. I would do a valve clearance check on #1 cylinder (easy to access) after a cold comp. test just for my own info and it establishes a baseline for your records too. Really sweet bike btw. PS if 170 is the callout then I'd check the clearance.
@Mike_Barker

It's about time for me to re-check the valve clearances anyway. Thanks for the info Steven! And thanks for the compliments on the bike too!

nice video! could you tell me how far does the filter cover have to be pulled out of the engine for it to be taken off after you remove the screw holding it? the exhaust headers on my CB are right against the filter and I'm wondering if I will have to remove the exhaust in order to take off the filter cover. also is that a copper washer on the oil drain bolt/plug?
@Mike_Barker
@Mike_Barker 6 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, the cover will need to come off at least the height of the filter. It's about 2" but in all honesty, it'll be a lot easier if you remove the exhaust and then take the cover off completely. I hope that answers your question.
@lukaszM46

Thanks for the quick reply! and what oil exactly did you use? and is it synthetic, semi synthetic or petroleum ? I heard these bikes shouldn't run fully synthetic
@Mike_Barker
@Mike_Barker 6 жыл бұрын
I use the Castrol 10-40 Motorcycle oil. If I used synthetic it would probably leak out through all the worn gaskets just as fast as I could pour the oil in! 🤣😂 Seriously though, I'd be tempted to run synthetic if/when I totally rebuild the engine. For an old engine though, just use the regular liquid dinosaurs.

How important is the spring to be put back in the filter housing? My bike didnt have one. Issue?
@Mike_Barker
@Mike_Barker 2 жыл бұрын
I've had a couple of bikes pass through my shop that have been missing that spring. While it seems to have caused no issues, I'm always a bit weary. A new spring always goes back in. Honda designed it that way for a reason!

Hi Mike, awesome video. I noticed that the exhaust sounds like it is rusted. I picked up a 1978 honda cb550 that has the original 4 into 4 exhaust, but its completely rotted out. Do you think it affects the health of the engine? I read that the airflow might make the engine run lean and hence hot, and can result in valves being fried. how do these bikes with rusted exhausts run? thanks
@Mike_Barker
@Mike_Barker 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure that rust has a sound... Those pipes were solid, but we're the incorrect ones for that year. Rusty exhaust can affect performance but more so if there are big leaks in the system.

@@Mike_Barker there are holes in the mufflers that would fit my hand. There’s no leak near the headers though. Do you recommend changing the exhaust system?

@@Mike_Barker I don’t care as much about performance as I do about the health of the engine.
@Mike_Barker
@Mike_Barker 2 жыл бұрын
The engine is likely more than fine. People have been throwing higher flowing exhaust on these bikes for 50 years. I'm sure your engine will be fine. As with all old Hondas you should check the condition of your plugs to help verify that every cylinder is burning correctly. Look for that nice tan Brown colour. White plugs will tell you that you have a lean condition.
