Dry Bag Retaining Wall #cement #diy #diyprojects #home #landscape
We just created a huge problem. I hate to say it but this could cost us THOUSANDS 🤦🏻‍♂️
Why am I sitting here right now waiting for a huge shipment of ‪@quikrete‬ ? Let me take you back to when this whole mess started.
A little over a year ago we moved into one of our flip houses. We put the final touches on our budget and realized that we had enough to redo (top coat) the driveway. This thing was a mess. There was a huge hump down by the main road and your car would bottom out when you pulled in. This isn’t a video on fixing our driveway. This is about fixing the problem that fixing our driveway caused.
We hired a local paving company to put a 3 inch top coat on our driveway and expand the parking area so we could get two cars up here. The cost was $3,700 which was very comparable to the other quotes we got. The problem that caused was that the right side of the driveway is now about 2-3 feet off the ground which isn’t a huge problem. The problem is that all this aggregate was left exposed. Most times the contractor will cover this with asphalt but It seems to me that the paving company ran out and just left it like this. I was told that this is normal and I just need a retaining wall if I don’t want the driveway to collapse. A retaining wall??? Now you tell me this. Man I wish I had that conversation on video. Over time that 28 inches of crushed aggregate that they use under these driveways is just going to wash out.
Aggregate is crushed stone used as a sub-base for asphalt driveways. The stone provides the necessary surface area for the top material to adhere to and forms a stable base for driveway materials.
If that aggregate washes out from underneath we have a huge problem. Asphalt, especially new asphalt is very soft. If it doesn’t have that stable base it’s going to crack, sage or just cave in.
So to fix this issue we are going to attempt a dry bag concrete retaining wall. It’s kinda like a dry pour concrete pad but we’re not even going to open these bags. It’s very unconventional. I got a couple estimates to have a fancy retaining wall built but the lowest quote rolled in at $5,000.00 and that is definitely not in our budget. I would like to knock off a couple zeros from that number. Im hoping to do this 30 foot retaining wall for under $500 bucks. I am a little nervous. I’ve never done a retaining wall before. Im sure some mistakes will be made. In the end I hope this isn’t a huge waste of time and money. Best case scenario we have a cheap solution that looks great and serves a purpose. Worst case…it turns into an expensive pile of back fill for the contractor we hire. Let’s hope not.
The idea here is to stack 60 pound bags of Quikrete and reinforce them with rebar and then let Mother Nature do the rest. A couple good rains should saturate the bags on the top and the exposed side. Mix that with the runoff from the driveway and moisture coming up from the ground we’ll have a solid concrete wall. Over the next couple months I expect that paper on the outside to start breaking down. If I get impatient I could go around and start unwrapping it like a big birthday present or maybe burn it off. Hummmm I kinda like that idea better fire 🔥 🔥
I am expecting some cracking and odd shaped corners. We’ll do our best to prevent that but I don’t think it will look bad to have variations in the blocks. Maybe it’ll give it that rock wall look that you see on old farm houses and barns.
So let’s be clear. This is not going to be a tall retaining wall. Three feet tops. It’s not going to be supporting a lot of weight either. Its sole purpose is to keep that crushed aggregate from washing out from under the asphalt. If I were building this to hold back a 20 foot cliff next to a house I would be taking a completely different approach. I take that back, I wouldn’t be doing it at all. I would be hiring a professional.
This feels like a great technique for anyone that wants to raise a flower bed around their house or their mailbox. If you’re tire of that edged look holding your mulch in . This is fairly inexpensive compared to buying small paver blocks for $3.50 a piece. When I started this video, 60 pound bags of Quikrete were going for $3.37 each now I think they’re about $3.80. Compared to the inflation on everything else out there, this doesn’t seem to bad at all.

Great job and it's going to really look good, add value and curb appearance! - If desired, you can extend the wall length it by drilling and cementing in rebar to attach more bags placing rebar in the sides and top of bags. If the bags stretched and have slight cracks, wash fill some ready mix in with water. Cool deal!

I have only done a few bags high, and we did not even use rebar, but I was shocked at how much better it worked as a low retention wall, then other solutions. Someone once put a concrete retention wall up, I guess 8" thick or so, but it toppled, likely because not enough weep holes. We put up the bags, and they looked great, even at 7 years. But the concrete bags built a heavier wall. I moved after 7 years. We did that 40 years ago with quickcrete.

Putting that rebar through a dry stack is the only way to go @maker-matt I was trying a bunch of methods here to see what worked best. Wow! Great job! Thank you for the wonderful tips! I am considering a similar project, perhaps using 50 lb bags vs 60 lb, would be easier for me to handle, but maybe not as stable? I say that because the 50's are more narrow in width. I'm unsure regarding how much and placement of the rebar. Is every single bag tied in with rebar? I certainly appreciate the detail provided in your video. Happy to see it was a "Family Project". Thank you!😊
@GoodTroubleHome
@GoodTroubleHome 3 ай бұрын
So glad you enjoyed the video @melindakantner9202 the 50lb bags should work but it depends how tall you’re going. Any hirer than 4 bags I would definitely move to the wider 60s. The rebar is through every row. I made sure it was at least 2 feet longer than the stretch of bags. So if your wall is 3 feet tall I would use a 5 foot piece and get a good chunk of it into the ground. I will be putting out a 2 year follow up video maybe towards the end of the summer. There was some cracking. I could have prevented it by patching it before the ice and snow broke it open but I’m still very happy with the way it turned out. Thank you for watching ☺️

Should have just used the wall blocks would have saved you time and money. Concrete is expensive.
@GoodTroubleHome
@GoodTroubleHome 9 ай бұрын
Believe it or not @kglass6 the blocks that I liked were $3.50 each and these bags of concrete were only $3.37 each. The cost of rebar was cheaper than block adhesive. The only benefit in my eyes is the that block usually don’t crack. I did have some cracking that I have to go around and patch but I will get into that on my follow up video.

@@GoodTroubleHome Is the cracking from driving the ground rods through some of the original bags during round one of the battle? I think I saw you drive a few extra ones in--maybe? Looking on YT for ways to reinforce the gravel on the outside sloped area on two corners of my new pole barn. I wasn't really expecting that much of a difference in elevation and the sight guy just used 1/2"-3/4" gravel on the pad and perimeter but really should have used some larger stuff in those corners. Still brainstorming on what to do while the weather is decent.

@jimhmod thanks for watching. The cracking was on the back corner of the top row. Because I set each row back 2 inches there wasn’t enough support underneath as it was hardening.

Saved thousands? 😂 Would have cost you the same to just buy retaining wall blocks. But if it were me, I would have just had a load of dirt brought in and spread around the drive.
@GoodTroubleHome
@GoodTroubleHome 9 ай бұрын
@skliros9235 dirt was one option and I did bring in two truck loads. I’ll show that in the follow up video. The place we saved money was the labor. We got multiple estimates right around $5,000. What you see so far only cost me about $600

Bad advice doing this you be better of with proper retaining blocks would look better an safer an cheaper. There is nothing stopping the bag from pushing forward.a wall failing.
@GoodTroubleHome
@GoodTroubleHome 3 ай бұрын
Hello @kennyoboy642 not sure if you watched the whole video but we put 4 foot pieces of rebar through each row of bags. These bags are also wider than retaining block. Not saying this way is better but it was cheaper mainly because we did it ourselves. For a 2-3 foot wall this build was almost perfect.

@GoodTroubleHome

Yes @eddyanglin that would be right order but we had no idea the new driveway was even going to need a wall until it was finished. I thought maybe a truckload of dirt to level things out but this method actually worked really well and it was way cheaper than hiring the job out

Lmao 160 bags you should have just hired a concrete truck and made a form to hold the concrete much easier and cheaper and looks a lot nicer. Your drive way rock and sand will still fall out from under because you never filled the gap from the edge of the ash fault to the bags which is the most important part.

As someone who owns a home, I fully understand the DIY part. Gotta save money anywhere you can. As someone who does patio, walls, steps, fire pits for a living. This is hard to watch. Something tells me that gravel holding the driveway up is on top of grass...
@GoodTroubleHome
@GoodTroubleHome 6 күн бұрын
I'm glad you appreciate the money saving part to this DIY @SandIGetit When the driveway contractor repaved the area they brought a Bobcat and ripped up all the grass and laid down fabric in that area. We did not watch every move they made but I also never assume a contractor is doing a job the way it should be done. I know there are different "right" ways to do things and then there are ways that are going fail and cost us more money in the long run.

That option was on the table @CATAONYC we would have needed about 20 tons of dirt. At $30 a ton, $200 in grass seed and an excavator rental we would have spend twice as much. I do agree though, there’s nothing nicer than a clean driveway to grass look.

Thanks for watching the video @lukewalker7305 I know this wall is not for everyone. It filled a need at the time and was $4,000 cheaper than an estimate we got from a contractor. It is not supporting a lot of weight and I don’t know anyone who hires an engineer to design a 2.5 foot high retaining wall. As far as looks go…when we’re finished it will be way more friendly to the eyes, I promise 👍🏼
