A DIY Concrete Paver Patio can be as simple (inexpensive) or as complicated (expensive) as you would like to make it. Regardless of the complexity, however, the general steps needed to build a DIY Concrete Paver Patio are same. They are:
1. Site preparation
a. Excavation
b. Compaction
2. Backfilling, Compacting, and Leveling the Stone Sub-Base
3. Backfilling, Compacting, and Leveling your Sand Base
4. Installation of the Pavers
5. Installation of Paver Edging Restraint (if required for your installation).
6. Application of Polymeric Sand (not covered in video, but described below).
Link to DIY paver Patio Blog is below:
atimprovements...
Step 1: Site preparation
The first step in your DIV Concrete Paver installation project is to plan out the size and configuration of your paver patio. Once you decide on how big your patio will be, it’s time to do some digging. You will need to excavate down approximately 8” (5” for Gravel base, 1” for sand base”, and 2” to account for the thickness of the pavers). These are approximations, however, and you may need to adjust the depth as required for your application.
Step 2: Backfilling, Compacting, and Leveling the Stone Sub-Base
Starting with stone sub-base for your patio is a MUST if you want to have solid base that is going to allow for proper drainage. Calculate how much you will need (Cubic Feet = depth (convert to feet) x length of patio (ft), width of patio (ft). Then, I recommend you do some research on stone suppliers in your area and then get quotes for delivery. Delivery is definitely going to be the easiest, but I picked up my stone from the supplier and had them load it directly into the bed of my truck.
I recommend that you use crushed stone or recycled concrete aggregate, but feel free to consult with your local stone supplier.
Once you have your stone on-site, begin to backfill your excavation to a depth of 4-6” uniformly across the entire patio area.
At this point, you are going to want to do some planning regarding DRAINAGE.
Step 3: Backfilling, Compacting, and Leveling your Sand Base
Sand is the last layer before your pavers and is necessary for a perfectly uniform and level paver installation. I recommend that you use concrete sand or mason sand as your paver sub-base. Once your sand is installed, leveled, and compacted, you are finally ready to begin laying your pavers.
Step 4: Installation of the Pavers
There are many different types of pavers and paver installation patterns, but the general installation procedure is similar for all of them. Start in one of the patio corners and begin placing the pavers on the sand. Feel free to use a string line or a laser level to make sure that you’re a keeping clean lines. Use a rubber mallet to tap the pavers into place and to make minor adjustments.
With every paver job, you will need to cut a few of your pavers to get a uniform line on the edges or to get around an obstruction. For me personally, I cut my pavers using a wet-saw equipped with a diamond blade and with a angle grinder (again, with a diamond blade). The wet-saw makes easy work of cutting the straight lines but the angle grinder is helpful for the precision cuts. Keep in mind that there will be a lot of dust when you cut the pavers, so be sure to wear a respirator and all other necessary safety equipment. .
Step 5: Installation of Paver Edging Restraint (if required for your installation)
In order to prevent your pavers from shifting and moving out of place, it is recommending that you install a paver edging strip on each side of your patio.
Step 6: Application of Polymeric Sand
(Unfortunately, I was unable to capture this part for the video)
To effectively apply the Polymeric sand to your patio, sweep the sand in between the joints of all of your pavers with a broom (a push broom works great). Once the polymeric sand has sufficiently filled all of the voids between the pavers, apply water in accordance with the polymeric sand manufacturer’s instructions. Once you add water to the sand, it acts like "glue", holding all the pavers in place. Both too much water or too little water can be problematic.
Give your polymeric sand approx. two days to set-up and then go enjoy your new DIY Patio!

Hey man! Watched this video about a month ago. Wifey wanted a small patio in the front yard for some lawn chairs are a small table. Small 10'x10' but had zero clue what to do. This was the only video i watched and got to work. Perfectly level with the concrete it butted up to, perfect grade, lines etc. Im so happy with the end result. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, much appreciated!!

About 20 years ago, at my first house, I decided to make a simple 10ft x 10ft patio with square 12in x 12 in pavers. I thought it would take 2 days and it took almost a week. Way more work than anticipated especially since it was a town house and I didn't know what to do with the dirt I excavated. I had to put it in the back of my SUV and transport it off site. Then I dug it too deep and used railroad ties along the edges. It turned out to be a step down patio. I found out that I didn't drain it properly. Anyway, this was before youtube and it was one of my first projects. I am going to attempt another patio on my single family home I now own and it helps to have videos like this. I liked how you used the conduit to gauge the depth. I am going to use that process when I lay the sand down. If it's one thing I learned owning my house and doing projects myself is that it's always more work than anticipated, and something always comes up that wasn't planned. You have to be able to adjust your plans on the fly.

Once I found out how cheap concrete pavers are I went to town. Built a 8x5 landing behind my garage, tearing my 10x10 deck down to build a 15x15 concrete paver patio now, a new deck was going to be $6,500. I’ll be into the entire patio for $ 1,500. Concrete is the way to go for a more natural look.

I want to know where all these people live with such soft soil they can just dig through. Everywhere I've lived has been about 1/2 inch of dirt and grass on top of several miles of limestone.

I am within a mile of 2 defunct limestone quarries so don’t even have grass. We have outcroppings of limestone bedrock poking through the xeriscaped and also uncleared areas on our half acre yard on the top of a hill. Our house foundation increases from 4 inches to 6 feet. Anything we want to pave is not going to be simple. The good news is that our foundation doesn’t move and in 37 years we haven’t developed any cracks anywhere in the house. The bad news is that anything level is going to require a perimeter foundation. A 10 foot wide patio would need well over a foot of fill on the far end. Decks are the norm. They had to jackhammer to put in fence posts.

@@AndrewThronImprovements We revisit the idea periodically and saw your video and like the look of your pavers and that you installed them so they will be permanent. One of our neighbors slapped some limestone rocks directly onto a load of dirt that gave about 2 inches and we laughed because they put chaise lounges on it but the patio sloped at least 30 degrees so they only used it a few times as it wasn’t comfortable. Taking the time to do it properly will give yours many years of enjoyment. We have a 2 story deck with the lower one 6-8 feet off the ground and did pour concrete ourselves under the deck in stages but the slope gets steeper further away. We have 4 large dogs who run and play but don’t want to use grass as the rest is native vegetation and xeriscaped with the dogs dislodging the mulch. Laying it on the slope would solve the mulch displacement even though we don’t need it since we have 600 sqft of decking but it looked stupid on the neighbors yard and new owners ripped it out and terraced it and leveled it for a patio but not really good for an open area for the dogs to chase. That’s why we don’t have basements and pools often need to be blasted or jackhammered. 30 miles away, flat farmland starts so there’s a lot of diversity in the area, with some nearby areas having caliche but they have a lot of ground shifting causing foundation issues and large cracks in walls and ceilings.

should of put a weather strip along that fence line. all that is gonna happen is that little to non-existent gap between the paver and the wood is going to get soil compaction, water, and humidity which is just going to rot out that wood even quicker (treated or not). just food for thought.

If your not gonna use screed rails, for DIY i wouldnt recommend it, as it may just end up taking longer. But screed it all out with a 4-6 foot level and free hand screed it in both directions all at once then pick somewhere to start and take off from. Leveling 1 at a time is the worst thing u can do Also hit up your local landscape supply store for some real paver options. Stop buying from Home Depot lol

I used 12”x12” pavers so you would be looking at 144 pavers for a 12x12. Good luck with you project!

Hi! Why did you use that recycled concrete gravel? Could you use whatever soil/sand that was already there?
@AndrewThronImprovements
@AndrewThronImprovements 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stacy - The gravel base serves two purposes. 1. It is more durable and compatible that the native soil, which helps to prevent settling. 2. The stone helps with drainage. Generally you want to use stone and sand for a more "professional" result - but plenty of people just put pavers down on "whatever soil/sand was already there". Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Inexpensive but you need a wet saw??
@AndrewThronImprovements
@AndrewThronImprovements 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t need one - A $30 angle grinder will also get the job done. Wet saw makes it easier to make straight cuts, however.

Why don't you sand and cement the pavers instead of putting them on the sand? - complete novice

Doing a very similar project, got it all dug out and pavers arriving (a few pavers already installed by the back door by the developer). Once i've put the hardcore down and whacker plated it, can you just use sharp sand? All the other videos seem to suggest 5:1 sand and concrete mix. Hoping to get away with just sand as a lot less hassle and mess.
