DIY Drawer System for Jeep Wrangler, Camping, Overlanding

I wanted to build a rear cargo drawer system for my 2016 Jeep Wrangler 4door. I did quite a bit of research and found some really good info out there but not a ton out there specific to the Wrangler.
I’m not an expert builder by any means. I enjoy it and can get by, but I’m no master carpenter. I took ideas I found from other online - videos and forum posts - and decided to jump in to the build. I figured I would document the process, not so much as a “how-to” video, but more as a “what-I-did” video.
For any expert builders, this would be pretty simply. But for those out there, like me, hopefully this will give you an idea of what can be done and will give you ideas for your build.
My dimensions and plans (some changed, FYI): jumpshare.com/...

Below is the list of items I purchased online:
- Rubber Flexible T-Latch: amzn.to/3wfPXxe
- Diamond Plated Rubber Mat (for top of box): amzn.to/3ld6WK2
- Drawer Slides - 24":amzn.to/3LhPZZJ
Here’s references for resources I relied on. Thanks to these folks for posting their process:

I know this is older video and I have watched this 3 or 4 times to keep my ideas fresh till I build mine. But I love that you got the game on your laptop playing. I can relate because that's exactly what I do when I'm building stuff in my shed 😂😂

This is such an awesome build man. Looks great and its super functional. My favorite part of the video is that you didn't go over the top with it. Used materials and tools that people of all skill levels can relate to and be comfortable. Great job!

So inspiring!! I'm pretty much a novice woodworker and I believe that I could build this. I like the rubber diamond plate. I thought you might use it on the drawer fronts. One thought on the table part if you're going to use it for food preparation, check and make sure nothing in the finish will make you sick. If any doubt I would sand it down and use an oil they make for cutting board. Your woodworking friend might be helpful with that. I think you did a great job and added some cool features like the table. Thanks for sharing your talent and video, Rodney

g’day mate, i’m a furniture maker by trade. Just a quick tip for you! it’s not a good ideal to seal the timber with a Urethane if you use that timber board for cutting food on. the proper solution is to soaked the board in cooking oil/olive oil for cutting food on. Urethane can go through your food when cutting on the board.

super old video but used your plans with a couple changes. Still used 3/4 plywood. Deleted full bottom and replaced with 3 3/4 x 2 cross pieces (Front back and middle)both sides and back were cut as you specified, but "perforated" with 3 1/2 holes saw down the center to remove as much weight as practical while maintaining strength. great job tho!!

Looks great! I actually build my plans for my drawers based on the same post on expeditionportal. My finished box should be a hair under 38" wide by 28" deep. One drawer is wider than the other to accommodate 2 cub pack tubs from front runner. The other drawer is thinner and I will probably run some dividers there.

I've been looking at the cargo tie-down rails they use in aircraft (and other things). I'm not sure how much clearance you have underneath the top of the box, but if there's enough room to get a good solid washer and nut in without interfering with the drawers or content, you could easily bolt these to the top. They're much lower profile that something like eye bolts that would be permanently sticking up, and they wouldn't rattle around like D-rings. They would also give you a bunch of different tie-down options. www.uscargocontrol.com/Ratchet-Straps-Tie-Downs/L-Track-Tie-Down-Rails

Steve Elliott great. I’ll look into these. My concerns where rattling and the height of them so these may work around both of those. Appreciate the link.

Looks nice, but damn, so heavy using that thick plywood for the frame and for the drawers. This is OK if weight is not an issue, but hard to see why you need full bottom for the box that the drawers fit in. Perhaps you need no bottom under the drawers at all since you are attaching the sliders to the side of the frame...

@RyanWelch-aofilms

Thanks. There's really not that much give at all. I mostly use it for my single burner stove and some lighter weight food/drinks with no issues at all. If you were gonna put something more than 10 lbs on there, you'd probably want to figure out some sort of stabilizer for the bottom.

Just thinking about security, if someone gets into the Jeep topless, and puts the back seats down, can't they just nab the entire box by detaching it from the Jeep? I wonder if it would've been better to have the attachments in the box?

@RyanWelch-aofilms Жыл бұрын
Yeah probably not a bad idea. I found that I mostly use it in the winter when top is on. After a few years I bought a Diabolical Enclosure for the back so when top was down I could secure items in the back and that works great!

Cool, but how do you access the lower storage? Also.. weight vs strength should be considered. Drawers vs open space.. know what you plan on stowing. Ours has acess to lower storage. 16" h. AO ADVENTURE Hey great build. I'm doing something very similar, and thanks for your insight and help. Just a quick idea on what I'm going. I'm cutting a hole into the base so I can just pull the drawer out if i need to access the bottom storage. Also, I pulled the liner out so I can access the storage, and my system comes up to the jack cubby so I can still access that freely. Thinking of switching out for a bottle jack I'll keep in the drawer and use that cubby for my tool roll. Quick question, how is the bed liner holding up? Debating between painting or carpeting.
@RyanWelch-aofilms
@RyanWelch-aofilms 7 жыл бұрын
Love the idea of the hole in the bottom to access the storage! When you say 'bed liner' do you mean in the bottom of the drawers? Those are holding up great! I am realizing that now that it's summer time and the soft top is on, and thus more 'open air' I'm thinking of taking the drawers out so i can store stuff under a bungee net. Glad I made the drawers removable for sure.
@thisguy2659
@thisguy2659 7 жыл бұрын
AO ADVENTURE yeah I'm mounting mine the same way as you for that reason. When I said Bedliner I meant the head coating you sprayed on the drawers. How's that holding up?

Nice job. One thing that wasn't clear to me was the woofer speaker. Did you just eliminate it or does the 16 not have it?

The sub is below the drawer. Doesn’t interfere at all from what I can tell.

Great job brother! I don't suppose you could access the factory lower storage? I picked up my 2017 JKU and will probably look into similar project. Thanks for sharing!
@RyanWelch-aofilms
@RyanWelch-aofilms 7 жыл бұрын
Brandon Koay No access to the lower storage compartment unless you pull the entire box out. Which is why I made it not that permanent. I store everything I would have stored underneath there in the drawers though. Hasn't been an issue up to this point. Good luck with your build!

Thanks for replying. So, I assumed you've relocated your factory jack? BTW how much did it cost you total for the setup?
@RyanWelch-aofilms
@RyanWelch-aofilms 7 жыл бұрын
Brandon Koay yeah the jack is in my left drawer. I'd estimate the cost between $150-175.

That's not bad at all. Most after market drawers setup I've seen are all over $1000. Keep up the good work!

Did you mention in the beginning that this fits in your pilot? I have one and I can’t change that until next year. It’s what I use for car camping currently as it is lacking ground clearance. What year is your pilot? Thx. Great video too

Robert Tobin 2011 Pilot and yes it fits in there. It’s not snug, space on left and right but it works.

Nice. I need sliding doors too. I keep water bottles. Does the wood weigh down the jeep. It looks thick

I don't notice too much drag on the Jeep. It's heavy, but not too bad.

How has the adhesive holding the rubber mat to the plywood held up? I'm doing a similar build and I've been struggling to find something that works well in that application.
@RyanWelch-aofilms
@RyanWelch-aofilms 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delayed response. The rubber is great! Holding up very well. The plywood takes it the hardest with things banging into it and chipping away at it, but the rubber top has no issues. And provides a surface that prevents things from sliding around on it.

Cost was around $210. But that probably includes a couple extra trips to Home Depot after a mistake or two. 😀 . I built the majority of it it in a weekend - maybe 8 hours total.

Thank you very much for sharing! Other than the two tie downs at the rear, do you have it mounted to the Jeep anywhere else? I’m building a kit and looking for a solution that is easily removable (like you’d mentioned). Thanks
@RyanWelch-aofilms
@RyanWelch-aofilms 5 жыл бұрын
Those are the only points that’s it’s tied down. It works fine. And like you, I wanted this to be something I could easily take out. I usually take it out during summer months and put it back in during the winter.

Christopher Rapp sorry for late reply. Are you talking about the screws that hold the box down behind the back seat of the Jeep? Those came with the Jeep - and I’m. It sure the size. I’ll try to find that out for you though if that’s what you’re referring to.

spicytacos 23 Yeah, I suppose so. You’d just have to build something that would match the height of this that goes over the folded down back seats.
