Hi everyone! I have a super fun and easy DIY project for you today! I am going to show you how to make your very own Show Sheen, also known as coat conditioner and shine. And it is so simple to make!
You only need 3 ingredients, and a squirt bottle.
To make your own coat conditioner, you will need:
1/2 cup conditioner (any kind is fine, I used Manely horse conditioner)
1/2 cup baby oil
warm water
Begin by putting the conditioner into a mixing bowl and add the baby oil. Mix them together very well. Then pour it into a squirt bottle, and fill the bottle with water and shake it up. I found the more you shake it, the better it helps to dissolve the conditioner.
And then you can take it outside and spray it on your trusty steed to make him shine!
I have had really good with results with this coat conditioner, and my horses stay shiny for a few days after a light application.
You could also add essential oils to have it act like a fly spray too.
In my opinion, it works just as good as show sheen, and it isn't drying to your horse's coat. ANd the biggest benefit is the cost! You can make a bottle of coat conditioner, including buying a spray bottle for about $1.25. Not to bad for a bottle of show sheen!

I added coconut oil and a few drops of orange essential oil. Put this on after a bath and my horse was soo soft and shiny and smelled pretty good too. Her mane and tail are suuuuper soft. It works as well or better than Canter by Carr & Day & Martin ($18 - $25 depending on where you look ). It even kept the flies away for a little bit! It's my favorite conditioner now.

@@Florencejordaneast I did. During the summer it's usually warm enough the oil won't harden.

You could also use a small funnel when adding to your bottle.

I just saw this video, 7 years ago maybe it was 25 cents to make, but Manely long products are SO expensive now! You'd never use it for this cuz it's like gold now! I got a large conditioner and a large detailer and it was like 100 bucks!!

My quick story & question for you: I always used Show Sheen IN an aerosol can so that it would be evenly distributed thereby avoiding any of those uneven patches: especially right before stepping into a Showmanship Class. This was quite awhile ago, however, but I received SO MANY compliments on my AQHA 15.3 mare as well as my ultra flashy 17.2 Warmblood gelding, bay with all 4 gorgeous white socks I clipped & used the blue shampoo/conditioner on to make them blindingly white--with his 17.2 height, scopy BIG strides he was a gem w/both dressage & jump experience far beyond my own hunter jumper. (not that I'm wealthy, the owners just didn't know what they had no one rode him & we stopped & asked my trainer got him so cheap you'd think I was lying--I paid the finder's fee & the 15 days she put on him & got him for less than 2k all w/ papers & he'd was dressage & jump experienced. Since both were show horses only, they were constantly groomed, hosed of and hand walked or held to graze while drying and washed & conditioned a few times a month only. Barn kept to avoid injury from other horses and/or getting strange fungi in the pasture. Because of the right supplements & natural holistic approach, along with 2x daily at least, they ALWAYS had beautiful shiny coats & thick full tails which had to be trimmed just above ground level & same with manes which required constant pulling & clipping bridle paths. I eventually got rid of my mare (tearfully) & moved to only my Warmblood gelding & he was a show horse only, so was constantly groomed and bathed & ALWAYS had an extremely healthy & shiny coat, mane/tail anyway-- the SS was just an added touch, along with the vasoline in his ears, nose, muzzle & around the eyes. QUESTION: DOES SS still come in aerosol cans: or do the squirt bottles of the homemade work just as well, not leaving "patchy" areas; (b) I JUST got back into riding and received my new saddle. I have been searching for ANYTHING else other than the pricey saddle racks to store my HDR CC pro jump saddle on & wondered if YOU have ANY OTHER IDEAS for me, on a tight budget yet need that + a bottom forward pad+ a 1/2 pad (or, I've looked closely & thought I saw a 2 in 1). I've looked at everything from no name Chicks-HDR, Dover, Crosby, to Thinline(my favorite) to Le mieux & Jeux english CC. Even on sale or used they are SO expensive--ANY IDEAS?? Since I don't currently have my own horse anymore; I MUST tack up & use even the blankets or 1/2 pads on any of the barn horses I ride even if they are totally ripped & will not be able to get the job done (or should be tossed in the garbage!) Like the 1/2 pad I was handed the other day was useless!! It was baby pad thin; COMPLETELY ripped down the spine!? BTW I LOVE your "on a budget" vlogs... & will be watching as many as I can after I come home from the barn today!!!!!!! 😂🐎💕 SO you can see one of the MANY reasons I feel like a new 1/2 pad + CC pad is necessary for the horses I'll be riding, just like with my saddle, it's used & I KNOW they have the leathers & irons; but I couldn't get them to part with them--so I had to buy them. I would never expect the barn to provide me with those for a personal saddle..... I just💕 ALL the things you were able to get at the Dollar Store!! I downloaded & saved that video...

Not sure if this is a dumb question, would there be concern that the conditioner potentially irritate the skin? I would like to try this on my 🐴 🙂

Rebecca Tang I would think not. That could cause irritation, and I imagine it doesn’t smell very good.

Yes Sidney Allard. I volunteer at a local horse rescue and a horse came in with a bump similar to Frisbee's but in the middle of his chest and the size of a baseball. It was just a harmless cyst that they removed for cosmetic reasons and so people can actually use a breast collar on him.
