these arent as effective in humid climates like here in florida but they do provide some relief

Super helpful ideas! I live in an apartment where air conditioners have to be the kind that fits into a wall, and anyway, they are too expensive to buy or to run when it comes to electricity. I do have several fans, but it gets to a point where they simply blow the hot air around. I bet I can hack something like this with stuff I have around already, which is awesome now that it is in the hottest period of summer.

We have this old fridge. Inside the fridge we put a roll of copper tubing , (50' x 1/4 "). And strung it under the house. Then made snail-like coils in each room with computer fans behind them and trays with sponge pads to catch the condesate moisture. We power the fans with cheap car battery solar chargers and run each motor through a thermostat. We have a fish tank pump pumping water through the tube and since the fridge only gets around 40°Fahrenheit the coldness is distributed to each room as needed. Very cheap central air cooling. But it doesn't take the moisture out of the air it puts it in. Many of the southern states use swamp cooler systems because the dry heat is not conducive to helping mold spores grow. The cost is minimal and the cooling is fairly amazing.

Fascinating. Now I don't need to budget $300 for a Mighty Kool next month for my small camper! Already have a good, robust dc fan (solar) to move my heater air around in winter so I'm actually excited about my hot Utah summer coming. Thanks, and and great work.

For hot, humid environments, wet a T-shirt in warm water, wring out, and put it on. Also, wet your hair. Now, use fan to cool off. This works especially well to cool off kids in a hot and humid upper duplex, or similar circumstance such as in a car without air conditioning. Just open the windows in the car to serve as your fan. These methods are tried and true, and could come in helpful to some.

I am going to try one of these. We have a seasonal trailer and only a 20 amp site. We upgraded all our bulbs, a brand new energy efficient fridge and microwave! While we don't blow fuses anymore...the microwave isn't getting to full power. It just takes longer to cook everything. So running the AC that it came with is a no go! We've tried with everything off, but the fridge, and it automatically pops the fuse. We have done OK with just fans. We are close to the ocean and surrounded by tree's and shade. But there has been a few times where it was really humid and the heat seems to just sit in the trailer. Thats with windows and fans open! This may be a solution since the space is only 30 by 20 feet and I would guess with cabinets, closets and furniture, takes up 30 percent of that space. I hope this works!

Its much effective or cooler if you just let the cloth or sponge to get wet well then shutoff the pump to let the water evaporate from the cloth and then when its about to get dry wet it again or you better put a timer or sensor on your pump to activate when the cloth is already dried.

Exhaust fans on portable air conditioners kick out very hot air so it would be great to use to suck up hot air through a filter and kick out air to an evaporative cooler. I thought about using it for green house use has well.

Great ideas for a prepper like myself

Use a large Pvc pipe place a pad inside run a drip system to the top of the Pvc that feeds in from the base you can fill with ice water with a salvaged exhaust blower fan from a portable air conditioner taking in air from the room that has an air filter that sends air through a Pvc T and forces air through the evaporation pad. My portable air conditioner broke yet the exhaust worked great so I thought of another way to use it rather then throwing it away. Its heat rated so its great for desert.

l have a plan for a great cooler for somebody who lives off grid and doesn't have the power to run an air conditioner. get a few electronic fans for a car radiator, those are great because they are 12v brushless fans which gives you better power efficiency when you're running off of batteries and solar panels. and since they are designed to cool a car engine. they can move lots of air for their small size. so here is how it works. you build a box out of whatever you want wood, metal, glass, plastic, whatever. and then you seal the sides up with silicone or something to make it air tight. and inside the box is going to be 2 partitions. one partition is an evaporative pad with empty space behind it where it can pull in air. l am calling this the "water box" because this is also where the reservoir and the water pump will be stored. and there will be a little inlet a few inches wide for air to enter the water box. you can run ducting from this inlet to the inside of your house or shed so that you can recycle the air instead of constantly trying to cool hot air from outside. or you can put a filter of some kind on it and just pull air from the outside if you don't want your space to get too humid (or you could do both). and then in the center of the box between the 2 partitions is going to be what l call the "cooling box" which is a middle space where the fans are creating a small vacuum that pulls air through the evap pads and into this box which is where you get the cold air. and then the other side of the partition has the fans mounted where they pull the air from the cooling box. and these fans are blowing into what l call the "air box" which where the fans create a positive pressure zone that forces out the cold air through a ducting system into the house. so far l just described an overly sophisticated swamp cooler. now here is where it gets interesting. the problem with swamp coolers is that they don't work very well in climates where it's already humid, because they cool the air by humidifying it and if the air is already humid then it's cooling efficiency goes down. so there is going to be a second cooling box that connects to the cooler's inlet and in this secondary cooling box there will ice, and the vacuum in the first cooling box is pulling air through the water box which has it's inlet connected to a secondary cooling box so it's bring already cold air into water box so the evap cooling box doesn't need to cool the air as much since it doesn't work by itself.

Don't forget to open a window a bit to reduce the humidity.

My girlfriend and I just made an ac cooler that doesn't really work. We have. Copper tubing on the fan 3/8 in and 1/2 in out going into a cooler filled with water and several ice packs. We also have a fountain pump that is flowing I believe 160 gpm. When I touch the water it is cold however through the 20ft of copper it is cold also but not as cold through the air with the fan. How can I actually get it to force more cold air through?
