Protecting our 12 KW Home backup energy from CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) from the Sun and/or EMP with 2 x 2 lumber, aluminum window screening, some galvanized duct metal and some roofing nails. This box should offer a degree of protection that will allow the generator to function should there be an energy burst that would disable an unprotected generator.

This has me thinking. It wouldn't take much to turn a regular garden shed into a big Faraday cage. Just line the floor, walls, and ceiling with this screening. Run a 4g copper wire to a grounding stake and Bob's yer uncle. They sell 100 ft rolls of the screen for not too much money. I think the only puzzler would be the door. It would have to seal the gap when the door is closed, but I'm sure there's a workaround that's not too complicated. This is a great idea. Thanks for the inspiration.

EMP or not, this 'cage' will keep the critters out too! Recently my generator failed to run on propane until I found the problem: insects had built a nest of something inside the propane hose's tiny opening which stopped the propane from reaching the unit sufficiently to run it. I can tell you, the screen mesh alone would have prevented that.

Bout time someone did it right. Make sure there's an insulator between the generator and the bottom mat. Square of plywood will do it. As for the garbage can, put a phone inside and call it. I had to close the lid on a strip of mesh to get it to make a good contact with the can before mine would block the cell phone.

The insulator between the generator and mat: wasn’t that what the “folded 5 times aluminum mesh” on the bottom of the cage was for? Is the plywood really necessary?

All the engineers I’ve read stated you are suppose to solid aluminum. Screening has holes. I saw a simulation. EMP moves trying to get through to penetrate. Great idea but I would use your frame but put the 4x6 sheets of exterior insulation it has very thick aluminum on each side and 1” of solid foam insulation inside. They state aluminum then a buffer like paper foam etc and then your product. EMP tries to enter top bottom and sides. Just a thought. The insulation sheets are 7.00. Cheap. Have lined plastic totes works great. Use the aluminum hvac tape to secure corners.

Don't emp proof a generator unless you only plan on charging batteries inside the box with the generator because emf can travel down a wire. But if you use alternative sources of power such as liquid wires and permanent magnets it's way more expensive per watt but water can't melt or get hotter than 100c and permanent magnets arnt destroyed by emf so a generator can be made emp proof and a network can also be emp proof using fiber optics to send data in and out and you could just get air powered engine that's emp proof and can charge a air tank to store power like batteries and can work without fuel you just need air pressure and you can get that with any method like use chemistry like acid and trash or bio method like yeast and garden trimmings cuttings slow production but constant CO2 or just use a air pump

hello there man, very creative idea and execution, can i get an opinion? i m doing a project lasts 2 year on Brazil and i m having a big FUC1N5 problem that is blowing my mind man. Here i have a chemical industry but there s a lots of underground water, so much on some cases it s coming from ground to especial hard ground on basements ... this water is generating a kind of strange EM field arround all area, them my ground condutors are inneficient ... do u think a faraday cage could dissipate back to the ground those strange EM fields?

I am very familiar with this problem, I'm from Wisconsin USA, we are a very large Dairy State, our electrification grid was built in the 1940's and unlike the EU we use mother earth as the Neutral / Ground from the home back to the Electrical Power Station. What you're experiencing is called STRAY VOLTAGE. Somewhere near your home is a power pole that has a cable ground wire going into the ground, that (unused) returned electricity is going from that ground wire ( through your house) back to the generation station. It can cause severe health issues, restless sleep, animals not drinking from metal bowls etc. You can trace the stray voltage source with divining rods and cut the ground wire at the source ( this is very dangerous high voltage and is very illegal, be careful because you could kill yourself). Or? You could be very blessed and live on intersecting LAY LINES. but hopefully I have given you two things to research.

@andrewscharbarth2099

A faraday cage doesn't "block" signal, it attenuates it. How much attenuation you get depends on how well the cage is built, but standing right next to the cage with a strong transmitter is likely to get enough signal through to be heard. You might 60 - 70 db of attenuation with the window screen. To get more, you'd have to build a second cage bigger than the first one and put it inside of it, like one of those russian dolls while making sure they are not touching each other. It's also possible the antenna in the handheld was capacitively coupling with the wire mesh if you were really close by, in effect turning your cage into another antenna for the radio. So try backing up a bit, maybe 20 feet, and try again.
@bwiesman

@@andrewscharbarth2099 thanks for the info! Yeah after I posted that I watched some videos from Emp Dr who said the same thing. I know I built it well enough so I’m just gonna call it good. I do see w a cell phone inside that as soon as I drop the cage down I lose all my wifi networks, then a few but not all come back, so I’m believing it’s a good “seal”.

I am getting mixed info about protecting the solar panels. What's your take on the panels? I have 4 aluminum garbage cans, two large and two small. I found cheap plastic garden pots to line the insides. Also used aluminum tape around all handles. taped both inside and out. I was picky about each can's condition at the store. No dents and good seal to begin with. I like your small tins idea for inside the big can. I think the important thing is to attenuate the pulse to a much lower dB to succeed. The trash cans should suffice. Make sure to have a drive loaded with movies for entertainment as well. I have a couple old tablets and laptops protected as well. I just bought two Honda generators because they are much much quieter than others. Don't want to attract attention. I couldn't believe how quite the EU7000i and EU2200i are. They also have Eco mode and use much less fuel than my older units that had one speed to create 60 Hz. The inverters are super clean AC outputs that stay at 60Hz at all loads.
