I wish we Brits had garage and yard sales like you do in The States. We just have car boot sales where, like eBay, everyone thinks they are selling a priceless antique and try to charge accordingly. There’s still some bargains to be had though if you look carefully. The part where the saw's name appeared was pretty cool and the handle is gorgeous. I agree you didn’t want the blade to look brand new, these tools have history and many of them are many years older than the oldest of us. To make any old tool look brand new will wipe away all that history. When I buy a tool I try to find out a bit of its history, my Jack plane, brace augers and mortice chisels all belonged to the individual seller's late fathers. The way the tools were kept, especially the mortice chisels, you could see they had been cared for by a craftsman. I was then able to promise them the tool will be looked after and respected, which I think was appreciated. A wonderful restoration, sympathetically done to a perfect standard. A video of this standard certainly deserves a subscribe.

Good job! I've been watching for just a couple months and have been restoring quite a few tools... I've done a couple polished to the point of better than new and some with almost all of the patiena gone...and some with a lot of it left on them..and I think I like the patiena better.. let's you see the tools age ...

Good video, great job! My personal preferences are to put a few coats of linseed oil on the handles and I use beeswax on the wood - I don't like petroleum products on my wood. The old saws I come across do not have the manufacturers etching so I use an overnight bath of white vinegar. I send the blades out for sharpening through my local Woodcraft store. I just had two done for $15. Took a week.

357magdad, I wonder if we both got interested in tool restoration out of a common attribute? For the 20 years before my battle with cancer, I was an avid bird hunter and later defensive shooting student. Looking back, I certainly enjoyed training bird dogs, days in the field, bringing game home and all of that. But I also loved cleaning, adjusting, and fine-tuning firearms and was exceptionally analytical about that relative to my hunting and shooting buddies. A lot of these skills directly translate to tool restoration as you know! Was it like that for you? Nice restore on the saw. I'm almost done with a Sandvik saw, but have not been happy with how the blade came out - mostly a big learning opportunity!

Marc....Glod bless you, amigo. I particularly appreciated your comment. I’m retired Navy and retired federal wildlife officer. I always feel for genuine outdoors sportsmen that are laid low by sickness, injury or disease. I was similarly “laid low” when attempting to hike the Appalachian Trail last year. At 64, ya’ just don’t recover like ya’ used to! Still, like you, I have renewed an interest in restoring antiques, old tools, and training my Aussie. God love that crazy dog! Anyway, best to you and Hang in there, amigo!

@@captaincoyote1792 A life of service as a Federal Wildlife officer! You sir, have my deep appreciation and respect. An endless job, given the ever worse behavior of some people and their lack of ability to understand how fast a species or a whole ecosystem can be damaged. It's interesting; the Appalachian Trail was on my retirement list. I don't know if there is even a 2 mile stretch that I would ever be able to walk - because I put it off. Same for Colorado 14ers. Most important to me was Long's Peak, only a 90 minute drive from my house to the trailhead. Every 5 years since I was 23 I would say on my birthday - "five years from now." Now is never. Best to you as well my amigo!

@357magdad
@357magdad 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Some people use chemicals to dissolve the rust. I like to scrape and sand. I worry that the chemicals may damage the steel or eat away the blade etching that may help me identify the saw.

I've got a very similar saw that I'm getting ready to take it apart and restore myself. The handle however, has a bit of a wiggle to it, is there any way to fix that?
@357magdad
@357magdad 5 жыл бұрын
Usually just tightening the screws will get rid of any wiggle. If the handle is still loose after tightening the screws, try filing the male screws shorter, this may allow you to tighten it more. Good luck with your project and thanks for watching!

The etching was preserved, but faint. It is hard to see in the video because of light reflecting off of the sanded blade. I find that the older Disston saws have deeper etching that survives better. I have experimented with gun bluing to darken the etching, but have not had results good enough to brag about. Thanks for watching!

Are there any tricks to getting rid of the black stains on the blade?
@357magdad
@357magdad 7 жыл бұрын
I think the black stains you are referring to are rust pitting. I have not tried to remove these. A lot of times the pitting is too deep to sand away. I have seen others try acid baths but I am afraid this would also remove the manufacturer's etching.
@1959Berre
@1959Berre 7 жыл бұрын
You do not want any pits close to the teeth line. Pits near the teeth will make it impossible to sharpen. Setting those teeth may lead to breaking. Do not buy an old saw with pits near the teeth line unless it's meant for decoration as a wall hanger.

Excellent video, amigo! Curious if your etching diminished while you restored your bald. I recently started restoring an older Disston D-8.....quite rusty.....as I cleaned her up, I was surprised to see the etching on the blade. Discontinuing my abrasive restoration, I inquired from others on line.... One restorer recommended mineral oil and very fine (600 grit) sandpaper on a flat block. While I haven’t tried it yet.....we’ll see. Bravo-Zulu on your restoration. I was particularly impressed by the time you spent on that handle. Well done!
@357magdad
@357magdad 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, it's a fine balance between removing the rust and preserving the etching. On the older saws, the etching is pretty deep and can survive some sanding. I've tried to brighten the etching with cold bluing with mixed results. I've read that the wood on the old saws is apple.
