I just noticed that I didn't mention the second part of the saw-handle finish. It's just shellac out of the can, applied with a rag and buffed with steel wool. 2 coats. I cover this in much more detail in my video on easy finishes. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gLdxYKiTtpipd58.html Sorry for any confusion!

Our father taught us to sharpen saws. Joint ,set, and sharpen. When done, place a needle on the teeth to see if it slides all the way to the toe. If not, start over. If the needle fell off, the set was off and the saw would not track straight. Lord help you if a bent/warped blade went unnoticed before sharpening.

I knew a bunch of the elder gents in my town as a kid kept whatever they could fit in a large jar filled with motor oil. Knives, check; files, you betcha; screws, bolts, small clamps, and calipers... motor oil. Also helped keep thieves out. You couldn't tell what jar had what tools in it because of how pitch black the oil was.

Yes to saw vice, yes to tool restoration. Question: any thought on making nicer wooden handles for cheaper new tools? Like a cheep pull saw in love of a plastic handle making a nicer wood one. Or a bigger cross cut saw and updating the handle to a wooden one? Thoughts?

It's worth it. Many years ago I wanted to practice making a handle and I had some scrap cherry and no money. I replaced the plastic handle on a cheap Stanley miter box saw. Over the years I refiled it to a rip cut and I still use it to cut tenons. I didn't do a very good job on the handle but it looks decent and has lasted 15 - 20 years. I'm going to make another one for that saw and (hopefully) do a better job.

I have done the same thing. Just a quick tip for everyone. Go over too Craigslist and head over too the tool category section every once in a while. I have gotten awesome deals on craigslist for vintage tools. I found a beautiful #4 craftsmen hand plane that I bought for 20 bucks from the original owner it even came with the original box he purchased it in. I also have found some bit and brace drills a really nice large vintage steel tool box and several other things. I found all of these on craigslist most for almost nothing. Also I live in a medium to small sized city west of Detroit Michigan by about an hour and a half, my city is Grand Rapids Michigan. So if any of you live in or are near a larger city than you probably will have an even easier time finding vintage tools than I do. My last tip is don't over look your neighborhood thrift store I have 2 vintage hand saws from mine. The money you spend is almost nothing but what you do spend goes too a good cause like bibles for Missionaries and many others.

I think what originally pulled me in to your channel was your videos on planing. I think what I liked about those videos was that you were introducing us...me to a new tool. I had seen planes before. I have a couple of my dad's old planes, but I had never used one and honestly I guess I didn't really see the value in them. But you introduced these tools and showed the value and how beautiful the results could be using a plane on a piece of wood. For me, it was the introduction and demonstration of a new tool that I found fascinating. Restoration is certainly cool and making tools is fun, but discovering new tools that add new value and extra layers of detail to your work and make your work more unique. . .if my comments have any sway, that's the track I'd like to see you pursue. Great show! Keep up the great work. I'll probably continue to watch whichever track you follow.

Hey Rex. Just adding my two cents. So you were asking if these hand tool restoration videos are worth it. For me, I work in an apartment and try to minimize noise and dust. For that reason hand tools are great. There are lots of other youtubers who do restoration type videos, some of them aren't even woodworkers. So while it's great to see you do a tool restoration every once in a while, I don't think it should be your focus. The thing that I found unique in watching your stuff is the humor and some extra hints/knowledge regarding the tool at hand. But your niche is low-cost project that mere mortals are able to take on. Absolutely... tools refurb is HUGE. Restoring the tools men depended on to make a living and feed their families deserve to be preserved and USED whenever possible. I do it all the time. These Craftsmen depended on these instruments. Most were well made and their owners took care to preserve and keep them in precise working order. At times, once I complete a really nice hammer or the like, I’ll put it through its paces. Certain tools just “talk” to you. Don’t think I’m crazy, but when you know you did right by the tool, it just has a certain and extremely satisfying ring and feel to it. Seems like it’s almost trying to thank you...

Thanks Rex, I enjoy your presentations and appreciate your willingness to reach a broader section of your viewers. To answer your request, yes I would like to see more detailed videos of tool restoration. I would also like to see your demonstration of the differences of making tools serviceable, refurbishing a tool, and restoring a tool to museum quality. It's heartbreaking to see high quality state of the art tools of yesteryear that have fallen out if favor, neglected, abused, and discarded. We all have a sense of history and know that our technology achievements stand on the shoulders of craftsmen who went before us. Technology is the "knowledge of technique" and becoming a craftsman takes more than putting in the time. It means respecting the art , the tool, the technique , and the history. I am a retired shop teacher. You are very good teacher and craftsman. In my second year of teaching a wise older teacher reminded me of this : he said, " You're not just teaching woodworking, you're teaching people." I'm encouraged to see you are reaching out to a broader audience by offering a deeper approach to your very fine presentations. Thank you for your service.

Tool restoration is a great way to connect with artisans from the past. We can learn so much from individually made or specified tools - my grandfather had a couple of tool chests crammed with tools he’d made for specific jobs and he used to tell me how they come about and when he made them. I was 30 when he died and as I lived a few hundred miles away didn’t get involved in his workshop clear out. All his tools were either given away or scrapped without me knowing. Saddest day of my life, no one realised how much they meant to me, not one survived. He marked his tools with his initials DRW and I always look whenever I come across old carpenter’s or metalworker’s tools to see if they are any still around. So yes, it’s important, to me anyway, that people renovate, repair and use these historical artefacts cause if they could talk, they might tell you about their old master and his young apprentice and the little jobs they accomplished together.

Thanks Rex, I enjoy restoring old tools as much as woodworking. It can be challenging to find the old tools but once you do, videos like this one are great for doing the restoration right.

Yes on restorations. Yes on making your own tools. Yes on the saw stand. Yes on just about everything you do. There, that is my brief list of requests. Now for the THANK YOU for all the great videos you make. As I told you once before, for me my idols are Paul Sellers and Rex Krueger. Stay safe!

I really enjoy the restoration stuff as well as the inexpensive tool series. While not all of us have access to old tools, I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not doing videos on them now and again. I like the mix.

Keep doing things like this! When this video pop up, I said out loud. This video speaks to me infront of my wife. Who promptly rolled her eyes at me. That's how I know I will like it. I was given a bunch of bit and brace as a Christmas present. They are in rough shape and would love to see how to clean them up so I can start using them.

Yes please, I'm all about the vintage tool restoration, I'm fairly new to hand tool woodworking but have acquired quite a collection planes, router planes, spoke shaves and a bunch of hand saws of all types, a saw vise would be particularly helpful but any restoration videos would be greatly appreciated

would love the older tool restorations vids. i started collecting planes about a year and a half ago and love it. it has gotten out of hand ,i have 80+ stanley planes . I thought there weren't places around that had these old tools, but my estate sales and garage sales have allowed me to find all kinds. usually 5 to 10 bucks , and if you find one the person usually had multiple planes, chisels, saws.

I say yes to adding in some tool restoration videos, too. Along with the projects. Mix them up! I built the mallet. Used some unknown hardwood from local mill for the head (It's super hard and dense) and a piece of oak firewood to make the handle. Love how a simple tap on one end tightens or loosens the handle. I've also restored a couple of old hand planes I got from my father in law. Saw is next. Thanks for the channel!
