DIY Hobie Kayak Sail Part 1

- Dimension and construction: • DIY Hobie Kayak Sail M...
- Sail Material: 36"x108" of Nylon Ripstop 70 Denier from Amazon or here: www.fabricwholesaledirect.com...
- Mast Material:
* 6ft of 3/4" diameter aluminum rod. I found it at Ace Hardware store but not at Home Depot or Lowes
* 6ft and 4ft of 5/8 diameter wooden rod. Slide these into the aluminum rod, 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom for the total length of around 120 to 124 inches.

I'm currently bidding on a Hobie Sail Kit for my Mirage Revolution 11. I enjoyed your content... Nice fish! My wife is a seamstress, If I don't win the auction, I may design a sail out of ripstop and make the bottom half see thru. Maybe see if she'll sew it up for me.

Great sewing skills. I like the colors and the pattern. Good job. It looks like the same shape and size as the hobie one, did you use the same dimensions? also where did you get the mast?

Solid DIY concept & video! I'm curious if you ever came across or looked for a translucent material for the bottom portion of the sail (like the Hobie sails). If you had to make this again would you do anything differently? Thanks again my friend!

What type of thread did you use to sew it?

Yes, (www.sailrite.com/Monofilm-4mil-X-Ply-54) sells the exact transparent monofilm that's used in the Hobie sail. It costs only $20/yd. I think if I do it over again, I would build that into the sail to make it easier to see ahead.

@@zebrahmedia I actually used very thin 10lb braided lines lol to sew the sail together. It was bit tough but it handled the saltwater nicely. I think jean thread would be ok but I couldn't find it.

The shaft is 3/4" dia aluminum tube 6ft on the bottom with 4ft of 5/8"dia wood rod on top. I also slide the 6ft of 5/8"dia wood rod into the aluminum tube to keep it from bending. Please check out another video in the description for exact measurement and construction.
