Ready for the coolest DIY modification you can do to your very own Hobie kayak right now? Nick Thompson, otherwise known as Sailing Yak (channel: / @sailingyak7096 ) has been extensively modifying his Hobie Revolution Kayak for years and turning it into a relatively low cost (many recycled parts), versatile, fast, sailing machine.
If you liked this video make sure you go and give Sailing Yak a sub, as he's just starting out on creating more content for his channel.

*Very well-made, stable, comfortable **enjoyable.fishing** recommend love that everything fits in bag. Easy to paddle for single person as well, however might be too heavy to carry by one.*

Bro thank you. I bilt my own 4m- 80cm kayak out of polystyrene and fiberglass something like the wolfyack and made it with a mast insert. Now I just finished the sail rigging and I used this configuration. furling main and gib. I made a leeboard and a rudder extremely similar to the store bought ones, pvc piping chair. I'm planning on mounting t rails so i can attach and remove various things like rod holders, sonar mount, phone mounts etc. Thank you so much for sharing your rig setup.

Dude, I've been looking at sailing rigs for kayaks for the past week trying to figure out essentials for building myown. This is, by far, the best and most efficient that I've seen so far. Good job mate! You have any more videos where you go into more detail on some of the configurations?

Cool rig, I just wonder about the backstay being in the way when you're fishing. The Adventure Island rig is appealing because there's no stays at all, but it's a big beast. I also wonder about whether she has too much of a lee helm when reaching because the sails are mostly forward of the centerboard. Puts a lot of pressure on rudder. One of the kits I'm looking at has the mast on a track and leeboards, so you can tune it to balance for your boat. But that one has shrouds and a forestay too.

Nice! I like the way it's rigged on to the sit on top kayak. I'll prob use an aluminum plate instead of wood. It'd be great to simplify it further like the Falcon sails. I'm planning to do a similar design to the Falcon but not drill a hole into the yak the way they do. Well done.

Now set an Atlantic kayak crossing record! It's been done back in 2010 but not nonstop as far as I know. Fame equals fortune in this world! At any rate this is good stuff! I hope Hobie is looking! 30 years ago I would have tried myself if not for kids, a wife and too many obligations. No regrets!

Ok, so this has inspired me to do something of the similar to my 12ft open top yak. I'm gonna finish what I've got and then I'll post a video to my channel. It's inspired me to make videos now even lol

I'm obsessing over this build. It inspired me to watch instructional sailing videos all day. I didn't see this mentioned, do you know how tall the mast is and the square meters of each sail? If money was no object, I'd recommend an electric turbine mounted on fold-down hydrofoils :)

Dude i jack some metal pipe and plastic pipe from the job yesterday. I work for a plumbing/hvac/fire sprinkle company and have a metal shop and acces to anything i need. I have a field and stream Eagle talon 12 footer and this is a great dyi copy of a very expensive rig. I just made the sail just now from a harbor freight canvas tarp. I cut it down to size and reinforced the edges with contact cement and then sewing it. I want it to roll around the mast with a spring pulling tension.

Hi Matt, that is a brilliant setup. I have an electric outboard on mine. Hope you don’t mind me borrowing some of your ideas. I’ve made my own outriggers out of wood & are not hard to make & look great. I would like to send you some pics of some of my ideas if I could. Steve, Kent, England

Very cool setup, but why are you are using two furling lines on the mainsail? You only need one. Same goes for the jib furler.. Use the jib sheets (lines) to unfurl the jib. The main furling line should be pulled when furling (rolling) up the main, not when unfurling the sail. Pull on the main sheet to unfurl the mainsail. The main sheet is that line over your head that connects the mainsail tack (rear corner) to the back of the boat and controls the main.. In this case you would technically be using the main sheet as an outhaul.. The idea is when the sails are set (unfurled) their respective furling lines are stowed, that is wrapped neatly around their drums and out of the way. Too many unnecessary lines can get you into trouble. Especially on a little boat.. On that note, this yak doesn't need two sails, only a main.. But it's still very cool.. Now I want one.

I would pay money for this exact thing which could fold for storage. I live in a sailing community and they could even help me put it together. But looking at this and making it myself is beyond me.
