Thanks... I am working on a super simple apogee detector. If that works, I am going to do another DIY rocket build video that will cover purchasing of items, complete rocket build and a parachute deployment system. It will be built around your 1" x 6" sugar motor. That motor works great so I don't plan on doing a motor video, people should just watch your channel for those instructions. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftWFn86kkrXOj2Q.html

Really nice rocket to start, it is a shame you didn't put an ejection delay on it! Well it gives you an excuse to build another one! 👍

It was a shame to see it self-destruct. I would have loved to see more detail on motor installation and nose-cone finishing. The use of Bondo was a novel idea imo. I was also curious about your thoughts on the tube length and CG.

It was always the plan for this one to be destroyed. I know that was a bit sad but it was fun anyways. I had not developed a deployment system and did not have a flight computer yet. I have all that stuff now. For nosecones... I have two videos posted for doing a 2" one and a 4" one. Both use very different techniques. For motor install... Well, that is pretty simple, it's just centered with wood retaining rings and a motor stop glued into the rocket. Other than that, if the motor is loose, I just put on a dab of hot melt glue at the bottom to keep it from sliding out. That part is not rocket science :) For CG... I use OpenRocket to design and "test" all my rockets. So I just mess with length and fin designs until I have something I like with a stability factor of 1 or higher. Trickiest part of using OpenRocket is picking one of their built-in motors that will perform similar to your homemade motor. I have this pretty well worked out for the 2 motors we currently build but it took time and testing to figure it out.

How did you glue that ring in 6" deep in the tube, you didn't show that gem lol
@rotaryrocketry
@rotaryrocketry 2 жыл бұрын
Typically I use another piece of tubing or a piece of pvc to position a ring like that. You just need to be careful that you don't accidentally glue the positioning tube to the ring.

I would have preferred to see the actual work not just the results of each step on some of the steps. Nice build, nice rocket. Is there video for how you got to a finished sugar rocket? I know how to make em but there seems to be as many methods as there are personalities in amateur rocketry and yours being 1” brings up a number of questions. Speaking of questions - why not just stick a 2$ parachute in there and save it?

I have actually changed to 1-1/4" PVC for motors now. The 1" worked well but the new ones still fit in a 2" body tube and offer a bit more thrust. I will eventually post a video on how to make my two current motor designs. The problem with recovery was that I did not have any kind of deployment system when I made this one. I do not integrate an ejection charge on my motors because I have just seen too many problems with that design on sugar motors. So it was really just a proof of concept for the rocket and motor.

@@rotaryrocketry what i use with 100% reliability is a half teaspoon of black powder i made myself for the ejection charge and just a toy parachute on a string, literally works every time...the effort you put into making that beautiful nosecone is around twice the effort required to create an ejection parachute system, I have found the only way to go wrong on that is in drilling the ejection charge, that has to be perfect but once I got that right I got it perfect every time like its a law but I hear ya. Looking very much forward to your video on the motor and anything else yu have to share

which motor did youo use for this project? I have plenty of tubes that size haha.

That used an old design we called the Kiwi. We have a video on the channel about how to make that but I would tell you not to do that motor design. Our DartMonkey motor is basically the same size and MUCH easier to make. Here is the build video for the DartMonkey motor: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/puB7a7WCybC4g3k.html

how did you drill out the centre of the retaining rings?
@rotaryrocketry
@rotaryrocketry 7 ай бұрын
Now I use a CNC machine but back then it was all by hand. If you have a hole saw, you can drill out a hole that is smaller than what you need then use a 1/4 round file to finish off the hole. If you don't have a hole saw then just use a drill bit of any size... 1/4", 3/8", whatever, and drill out most of the center then finish it off with the file.

You're probably referring to the 4" Eliminator rocket. No, we never made a video for that. It just kept changing every time I built one. I do have a really good video on a pretty large rocket though. This was a tall, 3" rocket used for our 1000 subscriber special... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pMCBm9edzJ7HfGQ.html

thanks but that requires a 3d printing machine so I cant make the big one so I cant make the small one. good videos but it would be better if you made one that everyone can do

hi dont know if you know but in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9OEodJ_t5fPj30.html the guy mixes table sugar and kno3. i know if this touches the stove it will make a fire so better to use a isolated heating unit. but, should I use powdered sugar or table sugar or sorbitol for this?
