Do-it-yourself hand sanitizer formula from World Health Organization (WHO) scaled down for home use. US/metric recipes and more: click SHOW MORE below.
En español: • Fórmula casera desinfe...
Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, hand sanitizers are in short supply. You can make your own using alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and glycerin. The formula is from the pamphlet "Guide to Local Production: WHO-recommended Handrub Formulations" at www.who.int/gp...
When you can, use ordinary soap and water to clean your hands. www.cdc.gov/ha...
To help prevent shortages, please buy only the amounts of ingredients you will actually use in the next month. If everyone behaves reasonably, supplies will return to normal.
US units -- to make one-third quart of hand sanitizer:
o 1 cup isopropyl alcohol 99% (see below for 91% or 70% alcohol)
o 1 Tablespoon hydrogen peroxide 3%
o 1 teaspoon glycerin
o Water to make a total of 1 and 1/3 cups (1/3 quart)
Metric units -- to make 320 ml of hand sanitizer:
o 240 ml isopropyl alcohol 99% (see below for 91% or 70% alcohol)
o 15 ml hydrogen peroxide 3%
o 5 ml glycerin
o Water to make a total of 320 ml
Procedure:
1. Put on glasses or goggles for eye protection.
2. Combine the first three ingredients in a container.
3. Add clean water to reach a total of 1 and 1/3 cups (320 ml).
4. Mix thoroughly by stirring or shaking.
5. Pour the mixture into dispensing bottles.
6. Label each bottle "Hand Sanitizer 75% alcohol"
Warning: For fire safety information, see the WHO pamphlet: www.who.int/gp...
Isopropyl alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol) kills bacteria and viruses. It is sold in different strengths, typically 70%, 91%, and 99%. The target strength for the final hand sanitizer is 75% alcohol.
o For 99% alcohol, start with 1 cup (240 ml)
o For 91% alcohol, start with 1 cup plus 4 teaspoons (265 ml)
o For 70% alcohol, start with 1 and 1/4 cups (300 ml)
The 70% alcohol case, no additional water is needed, and the resulting sanitizer is 66% alcohol, which is less than the WHO recommended 75%, but still greater than the minimum required 60% for effectiveness.
If using ethanol instead of isopropyl alcohol, per WHO, the target final concentration is 80%.
Do not use 99% alcohol directly as hand sanitizer. Some water is needed for the sanitizer to work. The final product must be between 60% and 95% alcohol. www.cdc.gov/mm...
Hydrogen peroxide 3% is an antiseptic sold in drugstores with other disinfectants. The small amount used in the formula is not effective for sanitizing the skin. Its purpose to kill any spores in the ingredients and containers.
Glycerin (also known as glycerol) is a clear, thick liquid used as a moisturizer in skin care products and as a food ingredient. It helps prevent your hands from drying out. You can find it in the drugstore with other skin care products.
If your water is not absolutely clean, first boil it and allow it too cool to room temperature. If your containers and ingredients are not absolutely clean, allow 72 hours for the hydrogen peroxide to kill any spores present, and keep the solution away from sunlight and UV light, which break down the hydrogen peroxide.
Some viewers are asking if they can substitute, omit, or add specific ingredients. Sorry, I don't know. I just took the WHO formula and scaled down the quantities. The WHO pamphlet recommends not to add any fragrance or gelling agents.
The consistency of the final product is a liquid, not a gel. A spray bottle is useful for applying the sanitizer to your hands without dripping. Be careful to direct the spray at your hands. Label the container and keep it away from anyone who might misuse it.
Beware of DIY hand sanitizer formulas that result in a final alcohol content of less than 60%. For example, mixing two parts 70% alcohol with one part aloe vera gel results in a final 47% alcohol content, which is too low. 80-proof vodka is only 40% alcohol and therefore not suitable for making sanitizer.

2 parts of the strongest white vinegar you can find to 1 part aloe vera gel. it's not perfect but in situations where you need something, vinegar is one of the best for killing germs and will get you through until you can get home and scrub your hands. if you can't get aloe gel then use 2 parts vinegar to 1 part dish washing liquid diluted with a little water or if your very lucky, some glycerine. carry in a spray bottle. yes your hands may get dry but it's nothing a little moisturizer won't fix! i hope this helps.

Tea tree oil would be a great addition for its antibacterial properties along with sage. There are many therapeutic essential oils that would blend well into this. I plan to make some of this with aloe gel and essential oils to give to friends as gifts. I am reading at a psychic fair this weekend and want to keep the germs at bay. The nice part is you can use this as a sanitizing spray along with sanitizing your hands. You could also add a drop or two of jojoba oil to keep your hands moisturized.

I’m in the US. I bought ethanol at an upscale wine shop. There’s no glycerin, isopropyl alcohol, or aloe vera gel in my area. I found a lotion made with aloe vera and glycerin along with a lot of other stuff but it’s going to be diluted with the ethanol anyway. I also bought several essential oils and vitamin E oil to ameliorate the harshness of the alcohol. There are a lot of recipes for DIY hand sanitizer. Some call for distilled or filtered water. I drink Evian and it will have to do. I actually found some small plastic travel bottles. I also bought several different hand soap dispensers. We wash our hands every time we return home. The shelves here are also empty of most paper products, the most important being t.p. and kleenex. The supply chain is broken. They said yesterday, 3/15, that things would probably not return to normal for a month. It’s difficult to accept that the China corona virus is causing such a disruption to everyday activities. Update: the lotion curdled but I found aloe vera on 3/20 and made a good version. Just calculate properly so that the final alcohol concentration is at least 60%. Washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is preferable but the hand sanitizer is a must if you go out.

Pádraig Glück think outside the box on this one......Burn relief and sunburn relief gel will be good too. Make sure the gel you get is Aloe Vera based which most should be. My recipe from University You Tube was 2/3 cup Isopropyl Alcohol...99% is great but above 60% should work. Mine was 91% and was still available at Dollar General. I had to make trips to two different stores but found Aloe Vera based burn relief gel at the second one. Formula was 2/3 cup Isopropyl Alcohol and 1/3 cup Aloe Vera Gel. I also used about 1/2 teaspoon of coconut scented oil from one of the plug in room freshener refill Bottles. Stir in mixing bowl and add to a travel size dispenser bottle. Since my Aloe Vera gel wasn’t quite 100% I went with 3/4 cup Alcohol and 1/2 cup Aloe Vera gel. Same concept just a little more quantity. You can put in a travel size squeezer spray bottle. If it seems to thick for the spray bottle then thin out with a touch more alcohol maybe teaspoon at a time. Mine didn’t turn out clear due to the AV gel having a green dye to it but works without being too thick for the hands and easy to transport.

weaker concentrations are also still effective if you cut down on the amount of water used for dilution, and use sodium percarbonate directly in the alcohol solution to get the hydrogen peroxide concentration. High alcohol concentrations are only ideal because of the amount of water in the rest of the solution. High water content is generally necessary for anti-microbial agents to do their job.

problem with this formula is that the alcohol evaporates very quickly which means you gotta put a lot of it on so you can actually spread it properly, which means you will waste a lot and use it up quickly. The glycerine is there to help make it more spreadable and evaporate a little slower, but the actual alcohol in the mix will still evaporate off leaving glycerine behind so it feels like it hasn't evaporated. I think the best idea would be to make a foam or a gell using a surfactant of some sort to really make it so the alcohol doesn't evaporate so quickly. Hospitals use a kind of modified version of this recipie with a kind of soap/foaming agent added to it, dispensed using a foaming dispenser. Making gel with the alcohol would be a good idea too, perhaps you could use calcium acetate to form the gell as it causes alcohol to gel up.
