Make your own wind turbine out of easy and cheap items. I found a motor and a windmill at a garage sale. This video will give you some ideas of how to put it all together.
The motor i used is AMETEK 124851 PERMANENT 40VDC MAGNET MOTOR WIND TURBINE GENERATOR 116123-03
Here is an ebay listing with this motor:
www.ebay.com/itm/133857937525
Here is a similar windmill:

Here's an inexpensive charge controller that will charge a battery:

O.K. If your wind turbine is producing a negative (-) reading on your Volt meter, just reverse the leads. No need to worry about getting the rotational direction correct. These motors will produce electricity equally well if turned in either direction.

I don't completely agree. Due to various effects of magnetic circuits that I'm not going to get into, it benefits both motors and generators to have the brushed advanced by a certain angle, because of this many generators and alternators work better when spinning in one direction than the other. If the brushes aren't advances then if one can rotate the case slightly to advance the brushes themselves then they can make their motors/alternators more effective.

This is AWESOME . You showed me exactly what I wanted to know. Of course I do want to know a little more. You see I have a really nice windmill in my garden and every day I see it spin I think of all the energy I could be collecting. Your video showed me the essentials, but I wonder if you could do one that shows how to connect the motor/generator to wires and a 12v battery. My plan is to have a back up marine battery to run my husband's c-pap machine if we are ever without power for a long time, or even to charge it if we go camping

try a barring collar to replace the cork . and your going to need a blocking diode to charge a battery or the battery will run the motor even if there is no wind .you can find real wind genny collars on ebay or you used to be able to anyway . but you have a good motor so the rest of it could be changed at any time . the motor is the important piece .

Nice project. I have 3 stepper motors like that. One i made a solar ceiling fan that ran for years. Made a wind turbine up on a 30 ft pole with fan blades. Had clamps like in this video and in one year it fell and broke the blades. Make a bolt on mount if you do this. Did the turbine work? YES It melted a 12 gage cord I had run to the battery. Make sure to install an diode on the hot wire to the battery. If you don't it will run the motor. Diode ---- Lets current go only one way. I used a 50 amp diode.

@bluemona my point is that the generator/motor is in between electricity and mechanical energy. you're talking like it's 40 kilograms or something.. obv, if you can't generate the required volts and amps, then you won't supply enough energy to your target...so if you're trying to power a fridge with a bike, you will obv fail.. but the fridge isn't demanding it from your legs, nor is it applying mechanical force back at blades...

The motors that seem to be easily available here typically produce peak output at 3000rpm, which is 50rps, or at least 10x the speed of a multi-blade rotor like the one you are using. Adding a gearbox or pulley system will significantly increase startup speed and reduce efficiency, so wondering now if using a high speed, 3 blade prop would be better?

Why not change the generator to a vertical mount instead of horizontal? ( That way you don't have to worry about the wiring getting twisted since the generator will be fixed and not turn) Use the hole where the weathervane hooks to the tower for the generator shaft to come through. You need to use a solid metal bushing to fit the blades to the generator. If the windmill blades don't grab enough wind you might have to build a new blade set up or maybe you could use a small squirrel cage out of a car or small furnace.

any video's of you using this and like charging stuff and such? is it possible to attach this to a very strong battery that you can use to keep like a refigerator running and or something like a tv? while the battery keeps getting charged by this turbine? could be like saving a lot of money if it works right? very nice video but the end was horrible hehe

How did you run the wires? Nobody ever shows that!!!

How did you keep the wire from getting wrapped around the pivot point where the fan meets the stand?

I'm guessing you've have to put a pole on the stand to prevent it from doing a full 360 but only a 180, it could rotate left or right doing it's full 360 but only 180 on each side at a time. I'll probably be trying his set up in the Spring with a 300W wind turbine motor.

Where does the energy go from the motor? Do you just attach it to a generator?

THis was outstanding. I am interested in the voltage and amps that come out of it as you have it there, I have been experimenting with the smaller ones and this made me rethink what I have been doing. thank you for this video.
