You would not believe the love of sailing in Nova Scotia .I had a professor who tell the class about sailing on the weekends .I swear he couldn't get enough sailing on the Bras d'Or Lake in Cape Breton .I told him once that because I was an amateur astronomer I had built a sextant and that I was able to navigate like they did 300-400 years ago .We Would spend time ( the 2 of us ) talking about radar, sonar ,best radios masts rigging ,racing .He was a double Phd. but his centered around his sailing .I remembering sailing to Pictou Island for the day to play on the pristine beach .The island has no electricity but the 100 or less residents who live full time there have generators . They stock supplies for the winter in the summer ...they get mail weekly by plane that uses the one road on the island .In an emergency they call search and rescue to evacuate them to the hospital .But the coolest thing is they are only 6 miles offshore from the pei ferry terminal on the mainland .My favorite lake ( Loch Arber lake ) one of the deepest lakes have numerous Hollywood's celebrities that spend their summers in the area .Ethan Hawke, Barbara Streisand and her actor husband and rumor has it Sylvester Stallone .I guess I a little into boats as well

Then you can build a sailboat ....then the waters of the Med .I hear the Greek islands are amazing .It is definitely something you can do . I live in an area where (nova scotia )ship building is a tradition .My neighbors built a 40 ft sailboat in their back yard .Took 3 years but it is beautiful .They are both chemical engineers and they took a year sabbatical and sailed from Halifax to Alaska travelling through the Panama canal.

I can't wait to see how this goes. I built a small sailboat (plywood over oak frames) with my son many years ago, and I'm sure this is going to bring back some good memories.

Just do it. Don’t over think it! It’s worth it….I have some glass work to do in the roof,and some electrical to install. Already installed a 25 hp outboard motor. This summer is the year it will go into the water.

I just now found your channel and subscribed. I completely get the whole rabbit hole thing. I find something I think I want to do or that I think is interesting and get hyper focused on it. I now have a plethora of useless knowledge of all sorts of stuff because of that. At some point I think I still would like to build a sailboat and cruise around the world, that may be how I’d end up spending my retirement but maybe not. Who knows. So I’ve worked in the oilfield most of my adult life, it really good money while it’s going but it never last, not on an onshore drilling rig anyway. I had this big plan of how I was going to save up some money and buy a cheap project sailboat that I could fix up and when the oilfield crashed, I’d go cruising. I even thought about doing a blog sharing budget friendly cruising destinations. When the oilfield picked back up, I’d get back on a rig and save up as much as I could until the oilfield crashed again and repeat the process. Well, then my son was born and he has some medical issues that would prevent me from ever getting to share that experience with him. He has Dravet syndrome which is a rare drug resistant form of epilepsy. He can’t get out in the heat because it will cause him to go into a seizure. They are getting better somewhat but he has had some pretty seizures, some we even thought we were going to lose him. That being said, I can’t do the things with him most dads in Louisiana do with there kids. I have a profound love for being on the water so I was thinking one day I wish I could bring him out with me and take him camping and fishing. So I’ve decided I’m just going to build a houseboat. I’ve always liked the idea of a houseboat but most of the houseboats you see around here are way too big to trailer. So typically your paying to keep it at a marina and your pretty much stuck on whatever lake your on. I’ve been doing my rabbit hole research and I’ve found a set of plans I like. Very similar to the one your building, it’s small enough to trailer, it’s pretty basic and simple to build and it’s built with lumber, plywood and fiberglass so no expensive exotic building materials. It’s an 8x20 or 8x24 depending on which set of plans I order, thats small enough to navigate most bayous around here and big enough to accomplish what I’m wanting to do. The one I’m looking at building is the Glen-L Water lodge or the Water lodge too. They are both basically the same, the too just has a little more space and more displacement

Perfect choice You can do it! You cando anything you set your mind to house boats are mostly just boxes on the water. They gave you templates sono having to loft anything full size Building a boat out of wood is not like a house where you take a 2x6 and cut it so long Other boats are mostly just curves and the only way to get the shape of anything is to draw it full size even if the boat is 50feet What they call lofting You can handle any tool you set your mind to table saws included

Never crossed my mind that the new project you were hinting at was a boat. I think I watched 50 boat build videos this week alone an all were guys. Your the first woman I have seen doing a boat build. As soon as you flashed those plans, I recognized that boat. I ran across his channel several years ago when I first started thinking about building a boat. I have settled on a design of my own now though.A small cabin with a wrap around porch an 3 pontoons. 16 feet by 16 feet total. Working on a design that folds up to be 8.5 feet wide to fit on a trailer. Also planning to make it a solar powered stern wheeler. Anyway, good to see someone buying those plans an building it. Should be fun to watch.

We built a houseboat, it’s changed and has been upgraded many times, we absolutely love it. You will get to know fiberglassing very well, don’t be afraid, you only get good at it if you actually do it, pretty awesome stuff really.

Emma, I watched you build and complete the bus . I did one years back. I have thought about a boat and / or a houseboat for a long time. Sadly life got in the way but, the dream is still there. I saw the videos and build of the boat you have chosen. I can also suggest the " Brandy Bar". It was in Mother Earth News and can still be found on the internet. ( I think plans are still available from them ) I do have a set. It is a little bigger . It could be a second for you if you find you like houseboats. I lived on Lake Powell for a few years and I saw many of handmade boat by many people with questionable skill sets. All of them looked sea worthy except one, it was basically two canoes with a shed on top.

With all the skills and confidence you've gained on your bus build, I think you'll find that building this boat is not gonna be a breeze. Plus you have actual building schematics and materials list.

Get a Fish Finder. It doesn't need to find fish but tells you the water depth and able to detect rocks or sandbars in a radius around the boat under water you cant see with your eyes especially when in lakes you don't know. They are not cheap, but cheaper than repairing a hole in your boat below the waterline.

I have followed Roy’s Diane rose for many years. Plus many more folks building boats off of plans by Jeff Spira. This direction should bring many of the wooden boat building community to your channel. You’ll have plenty of help to answer any building issues you come up with. There are also many FB groups for wooden boat building that are great communities for help problem solving. You just tonight popped up as a suggestion channel and I happily subscribed to watch you build your version of Diane’s rose. As far as plans he has done a great job perfect for a beginner. It is a beautiful little boat. Very efficient. Easy to haul on the road . Roy has used it as a travel trailer while traveling and has pulled it all the way to Texas to attend an event. Super excited to have found you on KZfaq as you are just starting this adventure.

Ive been kicking the idea about building that same boat . Like yourself I've priced out boats like the lil hobo . The problem is ..the boats are to big or to expensive and still need work. Big selling point for this boat is the trailer ability and small size with all the big size amenities. I think as soon as a few of my small projects are wrapped up i will also take the plunge, Good luck & I look forward to watching the build of your project.

Lots of people build those old plywood boats. Unless they are very well taken care of they don't last long. Unless you completely seal it all with fiberglass, fresh water gets in and rots it from the inside out. Better to buy a fiberglass hull and go from there. Boat yards have abandoned boat for very cheap, sometimes free Junk everything inside , put in some good stringers(if they are no good) , reinforce the transom, and build your cabin on top And, sometimes it's difficult to get insurance on homebuilt boats

Hey im starting on a crazy build. Just found this. Lets see what ideas I can steal..lol. I boat a 50 yo 30ft blue water sailboat. It was destined for the dump. I paid 100 dollars plus i had to figure out how to get it out of a old ladies yard. I cut off the keel, cut the top off and built a trailer for it. Its home. Im starting now. Im cutting the back half down the center and widening it to have more room and more transom. I got ideas. Nothing can be wrong considering how it was headed for the dump. This will be my 4th build. It's going to be a displacement cabin cruiser. The lines tell me it will probably semi plane with a 50hp outboard.
