important details: if a spoke is too lose it will get looser over time and destroy itself by repeatingly shock stretching with every rotation. If a spoke is too tight it will snap prematurely as well or damage the rim. To get a good lifetime out of a spoke it has to be in that middle zone where its just tight enough to stay taught and not too tight. This ideal tension window is easy to achieve by measuring spokes with spoke tension tool, cheap one from ebay can be had for 25 euros online. If you have used this tool for some time, only then its possible to accurately feel the spoke tension just by your hands.

If anyone is confused at 3:20 by "spark" he means spoke. By tightening a spoke, you make a spoke shorter, by loosening a spoke, you make a spoke longer.

I just ran into a metal pole today and went over the handle bars. This occurred on asphalt. I am 58 and weight 215, so it made a nice thud when I landed. Besides a bruised hip and ego, I bent my front wheel. It looks nowhere near as bad as the wheel in this video so I will give it a shot. The moral of the story is try to avoid running into metal poles. I will try to learn from experience.

Spoke nipples are usually held into the rim by their slotted heads. It help when truing to visualize it as if you were using a flathead screwdriver on the spoke nipple heads to screw them in and then just keep the spoke nipple turning that same way with the truing key. This shortens a spoke and pulls the rim towards the side of the hub from which it originates. Truing can only do so much on a wheel that is truly bent. It is easily possible to reach the limit of spoke tension before the wheel gets anywhere near straight.

This is not the only problem you can face what if the rim is not a perfect circle and more like an egg shape . Also if you keep just tightening the screws you might break the spokes So when should you loose them? nd thx for the vd

My bike has the spoke adjustment in the hub instead of the rim. Is ther e a special tool to adjust these? The normal tool wil not fit and i trally want to true my wheel.

the image that you put the cover appears on yaw axis, the work that you performed is on the pitch axis. the issue is horizontal not vertical. Do you have another video ?

I got a vintage cycling bike maybe from the 80’s. Today a spoke just snapped out of nowhere, and the wheel got the complete opposite of straight…. Just because of one spoke :(

You should have used the wheels own tension to straiten that wheel by pumping the tyre up and side banging the rim because the spokes are allready set just the alloy outer rim was bent you took to it with your wrench worrying only about the side to side axis not the up and down movement so you egged your rim

Your graphic of "The Rim, The Spokes & The Centre (Hub)" is 99% wrong. MOST spokes do not cross in the direction you showed. Spokes are laced to the same side of the rim as the spoke holes in the hub are.

If the rim is straight but it touches the brake you need to adjust your brake. If your rim isn't straight you need to fix the rim.

Ok besides fixing the rim to the left or right, you also seem to have an oval shape when rotating the rim. (a gap becomes visible between the ruler and rim 4:17), so how to fix that!?

They charged me $150 for a wheel when i paid $195 for the entire bike. Some of us just dont want to get scammed.

You were being sold a decent wheel that won't end up all out of whack like this wheel was. $195 for the whole bike go ahead and fix the wheel like this. Get used to it because you will be doing it alot. Get used to replacing spokes as well because without a spoke tension gauge you will be breaking spokes as well. You're better off just getting another $195 bike when the wheels get bad. I've been around all kinds of bikes for 50 years now. Quality bikes start around $600. The rest you get what you pay for. Not scammed. Look real close at the quality of the bicycle and you'll see.

Never ever truing a wheel that is more than 5 mm wobbly. Why??? Cause the material is stretched and you need to heat up the rim in order to normalize the material. If you force truing a bendy wheel the the tension in the spokes will vary to much. Tension is usually between 100 and 120 kilogram. On a forced bendy wheel the tension can vary between 80 to 160 kg. and then spokes start to snapp off.

Even a slightly bent wheel can annoy you while you ride. This thumbnail is made to make the problem of the wheel clear to everyone. If your rim is like the photoshoped one, then close youtube and visit your local bike shop ;)
